Porquê Acesso Antecipado?

“Toby's Island is currently being developed by one person. That one person is me and I get lost in malls and can't talk and cook at the same time... I need your help. Community feedback has been essential because just my perspective alone is not always enough. I've been developing quietly for a few years now, being as low key as possible. The development process has been hard to maintain with very little resources. Kickstarter has been essential for funding the project the first year and helping solidify our engine and assets. Five years of development followed that with zero funding until this year, The game has been 100% out of pocket since between then and now.

Steam early access will give me a fresh set of eyes on the project and new ideas. It will hopefully also provide the necessary funding (bendy straw business isn't cutting it - flight of the concords) to allow me to maintain full-time development again and hammer out the last stretch of this journey! Let me tell you, it's been a wild one.”

“I see the project being in early access until end of April 2020, that is my goal anyway.

Once the game is finished I will then start rolling out language support for other languages than English. I will also be rolling out free content expansions.”

“Early access will give you a chance to make me want to pull my hair out. You will have to opportunity to find bugs and tell me how bad my game is, and with a box of kleenex and a tub of icecream I will read every review.

-Steam early access will focus mostly on freeplay mode and will be used to tighten the mechanics of the game and see what people think of controls and features. It will mostly neglect story mode for 2 reasons:

1. Story mode is open world and you can do things out of order, so unless all of it is done at once, you mostly lose out on this experience, so testing will mostly be done privately in house until the content is all there.

2. As I add things to the game, there is a chance I could damage your saved game. While this sucks for both free play mode and story mode, it's far more impactful to the experience of story mode.”

O jogo vai ter preços diferentes durante e depois do Acesso Antecipado?

“This is a modest project and the price tag will always remain modest. Prices will always reflect the idea that the money you are paying goes to developing more content, whether it's for this game or future titles.

It has been my mission statement from the very beginning to develop games that are accessible to everyone, from both a cost and computer requirements perspective. For example, I would love to develop for VR but people can not afford to get into VR.”

Como estão a planear incluir a comunidade durante o processo de desenvolvimento?

“Fan feedback is important to me. Haters are important too. This game will rely on the community telling me what I've done right and what I need to change.

I've held multiple contests to allow fan made content into the game. I've even hired fans to work on design and content. I feel incredibly lucky to have such engaged fans, and I never want that to change. This is probably naive of me but I will keep that sentiment as long as possible.

Toby’s Island is a 2D RPG adventure involving monster-raising, town-building, and exploration with a blend of randomized and controlled story events.

An evil, sealed deep in the island's core has regained influence on the surface and it is Toby's job to end The Dark One's tyranny once and for all. To do so you will explore an island with many unique environments, meet new spirit companions, inject those spirits into eggs to fight alongside you, gather resources for building and crafting - all while facing an assortment of beneficial or dangerous (both random and planned) challenges.

The game:
features a story mode and a free play mode - and a quit button.

is directed towards 90's gamers - because I'm selfish

contains a mix of light-hearted/funny and dark themes - night time is a dark theme, right?

features many puzzles and mini-games. - most puzzles are in the retirement home biome

is stuffed full of random events, rewards, character mysteries and easter eggs.<-- If I could give you chocolate I would.

features a creature growing system where you raise monsters from eggs and evolve them. - wow how innovative!

features a multi evolution path where your fighting style can determine the direction your creature evolves. - I have no jokes for this one.

features a farming system for growing food for survival, battle buffs or quests - Almost definitely not steroids.

features a fully-animated classic side view turn-based battle system. - This is a favorite amongst call of duty fans.

features a mix of original soundtrack and music from other talented artists. - the soundtrack needed to have talent, that's where the "other artists" came in.

I am open to suggestions to include things players want as the game is still in development!

The Idea

The idea is to take many of the different genres I enjoyed as a kid and make a tasty PC game sandwich out of them, which I think is most kids dream at one point or another, except for Ted...he wanted to be a fire truck...we don't talk to Ted. I want to try and get things right that I think those genres sometimes got wrong. Of course, I will get many things wrong too, but I want to shape and evolve this game for a long time to come. Here on Toby's Island we listen and respond to feedback...mostly because it's an island and we have nothing better to do.
