What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Currently, I am unsure of which direction the game is going to take. I plan on fleshing out the story, and finishing the world map as neither of these have been completed. I have a rough idea of the various areas, however none of my ideas have been executed. I have defined what all of the players tools are meant to be, however I have not thought through precise implementation. So to summarize, the game is in early access because I have not thought out the story, I have not finished the world map, and I have not fully implemented the tools the paler”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“When I finish the game, it will no longer be in early access. What I define as finished is a product that I am happy with, and one that has minimal bugs/glitches/errors/etc. Additionally there are specific features the are currently missing that will be necessary for a full release. However at the rate I'm going, I estimate that the game should be released by December 31st of 2023.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“There are several features that will have significant changes. Firstly, the layout of the world map will differ as time progresses. Additionally, I plan on adding an OST to provide a nice experience while exploring. Individual features that I plan on adding on to are: the functionality of the tools, the players inventory/menu,”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Currently, not much is actually implemented and the game is rather buggy. The pickaxe tool has very basic functionality. There are shops, however they are not functioning as they will in the final product. The saving mechanic works, but I want to implement this into the story somehow. In short, this build is quite inadequate.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“The price of the game will not change when leaving early access.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Join the discord channel (https://discord.gg/zT6b4aKRUm) to provide feedback on the current version, and suggest features that you would like to see.”

About This Game

"Cave Crawler: A Retro Exploration Adventure" is exactly as described! Explore a large, 2-D open world with various towns and geographical features. Find tools along your journey, and use them to collect resources. Sell these resources at shops to earn money to buy items. Save up your money to upgrade and customize 'Paradise City', an island city far off the coast of the mainland that is in disrepair. Navigate your way through caves to fight bosses, and to find different endings along the way.

Tools:

  • Pickaxe - Allows you to mine rocks, and can net you some ore and gems.
  • Axe - Lets you chop down trees, and to collect wood.
  • Shovel - Digs up fossils as well as other items, plant plants, allows you to find secret areas.
  • Fishing Rod - Fishes up fish, in addition to other items.
  • Sword - Use this tool to fend off various fiends.

Towns:

Each town is meant to introduce a new feature. That would work something like this:

  • Town 1 (Miners Haven): Introduces the pickaxe, caves, mining, and is the first place where you'll finds a shop.
  • Town 2 (Lumberton): Introduces the axe and choppable trees.
  • Town 3 (Digsburg): Introduces the shovel, digging, fossils, and planting.
  • Town 4 (Rivers Edge): Introduces the fishing rod and fishing.
  • Town 5 (Smithland): Introduces the sword and fighting .
  • Paradise City: Introduces more customizability.

The numerical order of the towns you visit is arbitrary, as you'll be able to choose which ones you want to visit, and in what order. These towns will function as a tutorial of sorts, with NPC's to teach you how to complete tasks.

The Game Itself:

These are the most important features that will be a part of the game:

  • Variable length gameplay. The game will be as long as you make it. (Will at least feature a few hours of content).
  • Large, open-world map, with various sub-areas.
  • A story, with lore spread throughout the game.
  • Bosses of different calibers.
