With Vertical Slice 1.5, we introduced the first phase of advanced modding support through the VRAGE3 Mod HUB and Mod Editor professional-grade tools now available to players. Now, with Vertical Slice 2.0, players can experience planets and survival gameplay, featuring Backpack Building, a refined introduction to new core gameplay mechanics, and enhanced progression systems that deepens gameplay and reward creativity. Looking ahead, our focus is on expanding the game with content-rich updates and exciting new features. Next on the horizon are powerful creative engineering tools, including volumetric water, which will transform gameplay through innovations such as deep-sea submarines, large-scale water projects, and ocean exploration. Beyond that, we are also developing multiplayer, NPCs, and a narrative campaign to further enrich the Space Engineers 2 experience.”

“The current Early Access version is in its Alpha stage, and features Creative Mode with a 25 cm unified grid system, grid undo/redo, new blueprint building, paint tool, and powerful building options like symmetry and voxel hand tools, as well as improved performance, realistic destruction, and stunning visuals. Players can now explore the first two planets, Verdure and Kemik, each featuring distinct environments and offering new creative opportunities. This update also introduces the Backpack Building System, enabling players to construct directly from gathered ore and further enhancing resource-based creativity and construction.In addition, the update debuts the first phase of Colonization Features, which includes a Map System for tracking progress on newly added Contracts. These contracts allow players to colonize sectors by completing designated objectives and expanding their presence across the game world. Players can use the UGC Workshop to share their creations with others, and discover new Blueprints and Worlds. Over the coming months, we’ll be rolling out updates with new features and improvements based on our roadmap and community feedback.”

About Alpha

Play now: Planets & Survival Foundations

With Planets & Survival Foundations, Space Engineers 2 has its first fully playable survival slice.

In the current Alpha you can:

  • Land and build on Verdure & Kemik

Explore handcrafted biomes with caves, overhangs, cliffs and volumetric clouds. Carve landing zones, dig tunnels, mine rock and fell trees – the terrain, trees, asteroids and structures are all fully destructible.

  • Play the first layer of survival

Manage power, hydrogen and health while you explore and build. Set up a basic production chain using the Smelter, Fabricator and Gearforge, craft better tools, and keep your engineer alive on harsh worlds.

  • Use Projection & Backpack Building

Place holographic projections of ships, rovers and bases, then weld them up directly from ore using your backpack. Iterate on designs quickly with mirroring, copy/paste, blueprints and grid undo/redo.

  • Start colonizing the Almagest system

Use the Colonization Map to unlock sectors, accept contracts, grow your influence and begin the story of brothers Miro & Ivan Sokol.

  • Build freely in Creative Mode

Switch any time into pure sandbox with the unified 25 cm grid, powerful building tools, advanced destruction and full modding support through the VRAGE3 Mod HUB and Steam Workshop.

This is still Alpha: survival, contracts, colonization and story are just the foundations. Expect change – new mechanics, balance passes and added content with every major update.

We are developing Space Engineers 2 through larger themed updates we call Vertical Slices.

  • VS4: NPCs & Co-op – 4-player cooperative survival and interactive NPCs.

  • VS5: Full Multiplayer & Campaign – large-scale multiplayer and a long-form survival campaign in the Almagest system.

What is Space Engineers 2?

Space Engineers 2 is a sandbox about engineering and colonization where you build ships, stations, and planetary bases in a fully destructible world, then follow the story of Miro and Ivan Sokol as you expand humanity’s foothold in the Almagest system and fight to survive.

You arrive in the distant Almagest system on humanity’s first large-scale colonization mission. Your ship is damaged on entry, your tools are basic, and the planets below are beautiful but unforgiving. From here, everything you build is up to you.

Explore and colonize the system, mine resources, construct bases and starships, complete contracts and push the frontier forward – alone now, and later together with friends as co-op and large-scale multiplayer arrive over the course of Early Access.
