What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

Incident Commander is based on an older game that taught the NIMS Protocol to first responders. The earlier game was intended for professionals only. This game, while retaining the incident response processes, is intended to be less rigid and more flexible in the gameplay and therefore appealing to a broader audience. BreakAway wants feedback from the Early Access community about how much of the incident response process they want imbedded within the gameplay and how much freedom of action is preferred.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“The game will be early access for approximately six months.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The full version will have more scenarios and additional types of events.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The game currently contains a Tutorial (single-player) and three scenarios. The scenarios can be played in single- or multi-player mode (up to four players). Each scenario is playable in 30 minutes or less. Players can communicate with each other through in-game chat. We are currently adding new features and fixes to the existing scenarios. Over time additional scenarios will be added.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“We plan to increase the price when we leave early access. The price will be brought into line with other strategy games on the market with comparable amounts of content.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We anticipate two communities for this game. Professional first responders and gamers who like realistic simulations. From the professionals we want feedback on how to include the incident response system into gameplay to make the game a useful practice tool. For gamers we want to know how to balance the scenarios to make them challenging and fun. From both communities we want ideas for additional scenarios that will interest them.”

About This Game

A small town faces a big problem, and the crisis will only get worse unless you step in. As Incident Commander, you deploy and coordinate responder teams from multiple organizations to deal with a sudden threat to the town’s citizens and property.

Incident Commander uses a simplified approach to the Incident Command System. The focus is on operations. Players control police, fire, EMS, air operations, school, and public works units in real-time to deal with the emerging disaster.

The game supports one to five players. There is an Incident Command System framework for you to set up, but the framework does not force players into roles. Instead, players must learn to cooperate and divide the responsibilities for the most efficient operation. Player communication and delegation are crucial for success. Otherwise, responder teams may receive conflicting orders from different players.

A tutorial and several scenarios provide many types of challenges, including fires, chemical spills, looting, electrical hazards, school shooting, and casualty collection. The town mayor will keep an eye on your progress and track Public Safety and Incident Budget. Are you up to the task, Commander?
