What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“We want Desert Skies to properly scratch that survival game itch, so we're looking to build a community of players to experience the game as it develops and give us feedback on the experience.

We've held a small beta and getting feedback from players was invaluable and has already driven a number of key changes in the gameplay. We want to make Desert Skies the very best game it can be, and working with our players is the best way to do that!

We're really proud of Desert Skies, we think it's a fresh twist on survival games and we're excited to hear your thoughts and continuously improve on our vision!”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We're aiming to leave Early Access by the end of 2019, but ultimately it will depend on when we feel we've fully realised our vision for Desert Skies.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“We originally envisioned Desert Skies as a co-operative game, and so adding multiplayer is one of our first major goals. Our co-operative mode is still a bit too buggy even for Early Access, but the foundation is there and we look forward to enabling people to fly the deserts with their friends.

We want Desert Skies to be a survival game with a real purpose behind the survival gameplay. As players explore further west the landscape will change, new enemies will appear and the danger will become more varied. We want players to feel challenged to constantly become stronger through exploring, crafting and building in order to survive to the end and defeat the final boss.

Our main goals include adding new enemies with different combat mechanics including a final boss fight, several desert biomes to fly through on your journey, a lot more hand-crafted locations to explore, as well as more loot to scavenge, equipment to craft and ways to expand your airship. We plan to add randomisation to locations to increase replayability, as well as random events so you never know what you're going to find.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Most of the core gameplay elements are in place, along with the first desert biome that makes up the first act of the game, and ten hand-crafted locations to explore within it. Players can build and fly their airship, explore the desert and various towns and outposts, harvest resources from the world, scavenge for loot, craft items and equipment, and use a variety of tools and weapons.

Our first act's enemy is waiting for victims. The Seeker tunnels beneath the sands and seeks out prey by sensing the vibrations from the sounds they make. Once you disembark your airship to explore the world then anything noisy you do increases the chance of the Seeker arriving to hunt you down. A stealth system allows you to hide from the Seeker and sneak around, but with its keen eyes and ears you do so at your own risk.

A procedurally generated desert provides for different scenery every time you play, while the locations for exploration and looting are hand-crafted. We have ten locations in the Early Access version of the game and will continue adding more to the rotation.

The Early Access version has an ending, if you can survive to reach it. This is an ending to the first act, and not the final ending the release version will have.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“As the scope of Desert Skies increases we might increase the price accordingly.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We plan to post regularly about our progress and ideas, as well as releasing regular updates for players to experience and give feedback. We're very interested in hearing people's thoughts on the game so far and on our ideas for the future, and will be active on the Steam community forums as well as being directly contactable via email at desertskies@white-rabbit-games.com.

We also have a feedback form built directly into the game. Sending us yours thoughts on your experience, or any bugs you find, takes only a few seconds before you're back in the action!”

Early Access 1.6.1

This patch adds more in-game settings and fixes a number of issues. We're still working through more fixes and tweaks from feedback, as well as working on the loot and Seeker balancing. We have also improved the logging we capture for the Feedback form to help us identify and resolve some of the bugs that have been tricky to replicate.

New Settings
These new settings are available in the settings menu. The screen settings will override your resolution/window choice made in the launcher. We will remove the launcher entirely once we have moved all settings into the game menu.
  • Screen mode (exclusive fullscreen, borderless fullscreen, window)
  • Resolution and refresh rate
  • Vertical sync (exclusive fullscreen only)
  • Mouse sensitivity

Fixes
  • When you land in the desert the Seeker now follows the same noise system as in locations.
  • Pressing escape now closes the current menu.
  • Players who were unable to deconstruct their platforms on saved airships should be able to do so now (if not please send feedback).
  • Nails are easier to see in locations.
  • Fixed bug where canteens and revolvers placed in containers would lose their water/bullets on save/load.
  • Fixed bug where non-stop jumping would prevent Seeker from hearing your movement noise.
  • Fixed another bug that could have your airship slide along the ground or fly off without you.

The Desert Skies Story

It's the American Wild West gone horribly wrong.

It began with rumours of terrifying creatures attacking people at the far frontier. Then the first town was wiped out. Now years have passed and everyone has fled east, leaving behind a ghost land.

You were part of an expedition to investigate the creatures and their origin. A fully stocked hot air balloon kept you all safely off the desert floor, until a sandstorm destroyed most of the airship and took the rest of your team with it.

Now you're the sole survivor, out of supplies and clinging to what's left of your airship as it drifts down towards the sand. You've spotted some wagons in the desert ahead and have just enough fuel to make it there. You might find supplies, and if you can scavenge enough to get back into the air then you might be able to limp from location to location and rebuild enough to fly far west, solve the mystery and stop the monsters...

But that means landing. The creatures are attracted to noise, and on the desert floor they can hear you scream.
