END USER LICENSE AGREEMENT — Playto
Last updated: July 27, 2026
This End User License Agreement ("Agreement") is between you and totte-dev ("we", "us") and governs your use of Playto and Playto Lite (the "Software"). By installing or using the Software, you agree to this Agreement. If you acquired the Software through Steam, the Steam Subscriber Agreement also applies; where the two conflict regarding Steam's services, the Steam Subscriber Agreement controls.
1. License
We grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable license to install and use the Software on devices you own or control, for personal, non-commercial use. Using the Software while creating or streaming your own content (videos, live streams) is permitted, including monetized content. All rights not expressly granted are reserved.
2. What the Software does (screen capture)
The Software captures portions of your screen that you select, recognizes text in those captures, and displays translations and learning aids. Captures and recognized text are processed locally on your device. Captured images and captured text are not sent to us, other than the individual dictionary-form words you look up, save, or review (described in Section 5) and support reports you explicitly choose to send (Section 5). See Section 5 for the limited, anonymized usage statistics the Software sends.
The Software reads pixels from the screen only. It does not read or write other programs' memory, does not modify game files, and does not inject code into other processes. To support cursor-based features, it uses a standard system-wide mouse-position listener that runs entirely inside the Software's own process.
3. Your responsibilities
You are responsible for complying with the terms of the games and other software you use alongside the Software, and with applicable law. Some online games restrict third-party tools; check the rules of the game you play. The Software is a reading and learning aid and must not be used to gain unfair advantage in competitive play.
4. Third-party components and models
The Software includes third-party open-source components, and downloads machine-learning models at first run. These components and models are listed with their licenses in the THIRD-PARTY-NOTICES file distributed with the Software and in the in-app licenses view. Each model is licensed under its own terms (which may include separate use terms) and may not be extracted and redistributed except as those terms allow.
5. Usage statistics (telemetry)
To improve the Software, it sends us limited, anonymized usage statistics by default. This includes: app version, platform, and UI language; feature, mode, and capture-method usage; language settings and language pairs; setup progress, days since install, and launch counts; error codes; and vocabulary-engagement events — when you look up, save, or review a word, the dictionary form of that word with its part of speech, coarse difficulty level, review result, your overall proficiency bucket, and the associated game title and Steam App ID. It does not include screen captures, screenshots, translated sentences, free text, personal files, or your Steam identity.
A randomly generated installation identifier (not linked to your Steam account or any account) is used only for aggregate setup and milestone statistics (first launch, setup completion, first successful translation). Error codes and all other statistics use a token that changes daily and cannot be linked across days.
You can turn these statistics off at any time in Settings → Advanced → Telemetry. Details are in our Privacy Policy: https://playto.dev/privacy/. We rely on our legitimate interest in improving the Software as the legal basis for this processing where such a basis is required.
Separately, if you contact support from inside the Software, a diagnostic report is sent only when you choose to send it. It can include application logs (with recognized and translated text masked out), system information such as GPU and CPU model, your settings, profile names (masked by default), and an email address if you provide one.
6. Demo / Lite version
Playto Lite is a free edition with limited features and limited history retention. We may change what is included in the free edition. Learning data you create in Lite carries over if you purchase the full version on the same device.
7. Updates and Early Access
The Software is under active development. Features may change, be added, or be removed. We may update the Software automatically through Steam.
8. No warranty
The Software is provided "as is", without warranties of any kind. Machine translation and text recognition are imperfect; translations may be wrong. Do not rely on the Software where accuracy is critical. We do not warrant uninterrupted or error-free operation.
9. Limitation of liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, we are not liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or loss of data, arising from your use of the Software. Our total liability under this Agreement is limited to the amount you paid for the Software. Nothing in this Agreement excludes liability that cannot be excluded by law, and it does not affect your statutory rights as a consumer.
10. Termination
This Agreement ends automatically if you materially breach it. You may end it at any time by uninstalling the Software. Sections 4, 8, 9, and 11 survive termination.
11. Governing law
This Agreement is governed by the laws of Japan, without regard to conflict-of-law rules. Mandatory consumer-protection rules of your country of residence remain unaffected.
