# Aethel Mine — End User Licence Agreement

**Agreement version 1.0 — 6 September 2026 — for Aethel Mine 0.1 (early
access)**

> **A note before the legal text.** This document was drafted for Aethel Mine by
> its developer and has not been reviewed by a lawyer. It is written to be
> honest and readable rather than exhaustive, and it should be checked by a
> qualified professional before the game is sold — particularly the sections on
> liability, consumer rights and governing law, which vary by country and which
> no template can settle for you. Passages in **[square brackets]** are
> placeholders that must be filled in before publication.

## 1. Who this agreement is between

This End User Licence Agreement ("**Agreement**") is a contract between you
("**you**") and **[legal name of the developer or company, and address]**
("**we**", "**us**"), the developer and publisher of the video game **Aethel
Mine** ("**the Game**").

The Game is distributed through Steam, operated by Valve Corporation. Your use
of Steam is governed by the **Steam Subscriber Agreement**, which is a separate
contract between you and Valve. Where this Agreement and the Steam Subscriber
Agreement disagree about the operation of Steam itself, the Steam Subscriber
Agreement prevails.

## 2. Accepting this agreement

By installing, launching or playing the Game you accept this Agreement. If you
do not accept it, do not install or play the Game; if you have already bought
it, you may seek a refund through Steam's refund process, subject to Valve's
conditions.

## 3. What you are granted

We grant you a **personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable licence**
to install and play the Game for your own private, non-commercial entertainment,
on the devices permitted by your Steam account, for as long as this Agreement is
in force.

You are buying a licence to play the Game. You are not buying the Game itself:
ownership of the Game and everything in it stays with us and with our licensors
(section 7).

Your licence includes:

- installing the Game on any device you control that your Steam account allows;
- playing it alone or with others, including hosting and joining multiplayer
sessions (section 6);
- making copies of your own save files, and keeping them;
- recording, streaming and publishing video or images of your own play,
including monetised video, without a separate permission from us — see
section 9.

## 4. What you may not do

You may not:

1. sell, rent, lease, sublicense, lend or otherwise transfer the Game or your
licence to anyone, except as Steam's own family-sharing and gifting features
allow;
2. distribute copies of the Game or of its files, in whole or in part, including
its executable, its assets, its data tables and its source-derived files;
3. remove, disable or circumvent any licence check, digital-rights management or
authentication mechanism;
4. reverse engineer, decompile or disassemble the Game, **except** to the extent
that applicable law expressly permits it — in the European Union, Directive
2009/24/EC on the legal protection of computer programs, and equivalent
national law, permits certain acts for interoperability and error correction,
and nothing in this Agreement restricts those rights;
5. use the Game or any part of it to train, fine-tune or evaluate a machine
learning model, or to build a dataset for that purpose, without our written
permission;
6. use the Game commercially — in an arcade, a hotel, a bar, a paid tournament,
a rented booth, a cloud-gaming service you charge for, or any other setting
where money is taken for access to it — without a separate written licence
from us. Streaming and video are governed by section 9 instead;
7. modify the Game in order to cheat, disrupt or gain an unfair advantage in a
multiplayer session with people who have not agreed to it (section 6);
8. use the Game to break the law, to harass anybody, or to distribute unlawful
material through its multiplayer features.

## 5. Saves, updates and availability

**Saves.** The Game writes its save files to your own computer. Save files are
yours: you may copy, keep, edit or delete them. We do not guarantee that a save
file written by one version of the Game will be readable by a later version,
though we will try to keep them readable and will say so in the patch notes when
we cannot.

**Steam Cloud.** If Steam Cloud is enabled for your account, Steam may copy your
save files to Valve's servers so that they follow you between machines. That
copying is performed by Steam under the Steam Subscriber Agreement and Valve's
privacy policy, not by us.

**Early access.** Aethel Mine 0.1 is an early-access game. It is sold in an
unfinished state, on purpose and in the open: features named on its store page
may change, be delayed or be dropped, and the version number is 0.1 rather than
1.0 for exactly that reason. You are buying what the Game is today, not a
promise about what it will be.

**Updates.** We may issue updates that fix faults, change balance, add content
or remove content. Steam may install them automatically. An update may change
how the Game plays.

**Availability.** The Game is offered as it is, on the platform it is sold on.
We do not promise that it will remain available for purchase indefinitely, that
any particular feature will be maintained forever, or that multiplayer services
will run for a specified period. If we discontinue a networked feature we will
give reasonable notice on the Game's Steam page.

## 6. Multiplayer, and what it exposes

The Game's multiplayer is **peer-to-peer**. There is no server of ours in the
middle. You should understand three consequences before you use it:

1. **Your network address is visible to the people you play with.** When you
host a session, or join one, your device exchanges packets directly with the
other players' devices, and each of them can see the address those packets
come from. If you do not want to share that with somebody, do not play with
them.
2. **The host decides the session.** A hosted session runs on the host's world
and to the host's clock. The host can end it at any time.
3. **We do not moderate sessions and we cannot recover a session's contents.**
What another player does in a shared world — including demolishing what you
built — is between you and them.

You agree not to use the multiplayer features to disrupt other players' games
through modified clients, packet manipulation, or exploitation of faults you
have found. Reporting a fault to us instead is always welcome and never
punished.

## 7. Ownership, and other people's work

The Game, its code, its art, its text, its data and its name are protected by
copyright and other intellectual property law. Except for the licence in
section 3, nothing in this Agreement transfers any right in them to you.

The Game is built with, and contains, third-party work used under its own
licence. As of this version:

- **SDL2** (Simple DirectMedia Layer), used under the **zlib licence**.
- **The Flux# compiler**, a fork maintained inside this project, used and
redistributed under its own licence terms; its source is available on request.
- **"[FREE] Space Isometric Pixel art 32x32" by KipperFalcon**, used under the
pack's own licence, which permits commercial use and modification and
**prohibits redistribution of the assets as standalone content or as part of
an asset collection**. You therefore may not extract the Game's art files and
redistribute them.
- Other third-party components, each listed with its licence in the file
`THIRD-PARTY.md` distributed with the Game.

These licences give their authors' rights, not ours: a permission we have does
not become a permission you have merely because the work reached you inside the
Game.

## 8. Mods and player-made content

We like mods and we do not want to stop you making them. Subject to section 4:

- You **may** write and share modifications, tools, texture packs and save
editors for the Game, free of charge, as long as you do not distribute the
Game's own files with them and do not charge for them.
- You **may not** distribute a modified copy of the Game itself, or anything
that can be played without owning the Game.
- If you share a mod, you keep the copyright in what you wrote. By sharing it
publicly you grant us a **non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free licence** to
study it, to discuss it, and to implement similar functionality in the Game
ourselves. We do not claim ownership of your mod and we will not ship your
code in the Game without asking you first.
- Anything you type into the Game that reaches other players — a world name, a
message — remains yours, and you are responsible for it.

## 9. Video, streaming and coverage

You may record, stream, broadcast and publish audiovisual material captured from
your own play of the Game, including on platforms that pay you for it, and
including with commentary or sponsorship, provided that:

- the material is substantially your own work and not simply a copy of the
Game's own assets, cinematics or soundtrack presented on their own;
- you do not imply that we endorse you, your channel or your sponsors without
our written agreement;
- you do not use the material to distribute a copy of the Game, or to
circumvent buying it.

This permission may be withdrawn from a specific person only, in writing, and
only for a reason we state.

## 10. Personal data

We do not operate servers for the Game and we do not collect personal data
ourselves. Specifically:

- The Game stores your settings and your saves **on your own computer**, and
through Steam Cloud if you have it enabled.
- The Game does not send telemetry, analytics or crash reports to us.
- Multiplayer exchanges only what a session needs: the actions players take, the
positions of their characters, and the network addresses those packets carry
(section 6).

Valve, as the operator of Steam, processes personal data about your purchase and
your account under **Valve's Privacy Policy**, which is separate from this
Agreement.

If a future version of the Game introduces any collection of personal data, it
will say so before it collects anything, and this section will be updated.

## 11. No warranty

To the fullest extent permitted by law, the Game is provided **"as is"**,
without warranty of any kind, express or implied, including any implied warranty
of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, or non-infringement. We do
not warrant that the Game is free of faults, that it will run on any particular
hardware or system configuration, or that a save file, a session or a world will
survive an update.

**This section does not exclude anything that cannot lawfully be excluded.** In
particular, if you are a consumer in the European Union, the United Kingdom, or
another jurisdiction with mandatory consumer-protection rules, you keep every
statutory right you have — including, in the EU, your rights under Directive
(EU) 2019/770 on contracts for the supply of digital content — and nothing here
limits them.

## 12. Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, we are not liable for indirect,
incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages, nor for lost profits,
lost data, lost saves or lost time, arising from your use of or inability to use
the Game.

Where liability cannot be excluded, our total liability to you under this
Agreement is limited to the amount you paid for the Game.

Nothing in this section limits our liability for death or personal injury caused
by our negligence, for fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation, or for anything
else that cannot lawfully be limited.

## 13. Termination

This Agreement lasts until it is ended.

You may end it at any time by uninstalling the Game and stopping using it.

We may end it if you materially breach section 4, section 6 or section 8 — for
example by distributing the Game, by attacking other players' sessions, or by
selling access to it. Where the breach can be put right, we will ask you to put
it right first and give you a reasonable time to do so, unless the breach is
deliberate and serious.

When this Agreement ends, your licence ends and you must stop using the Game and
delete your copies of it. Sections 7, 11, 12 and 14 survive.

Ending this Agreement does not by itself entitle you to a refund; refunds are
handled by Valve under the Steam Subscriber Agreement.

## 14. Law, disputes and the rest

**Governing law.** This Agreement is governed by the law of **[country /
region]**, without regard to its conflict-of-laws rules. If you are a consumer,
this does not deprive you of the protection of the mandatory law of the country
where you live.

**Disputes.** The courts of **France** have jurisdiction, save that a
consumer may also bring proceedings in the courts of their own country of
residence, and that nothing here prevents either party from seeking urgent
interim relief elsewhere.

**Whole agreement.** This Agreement, together with the licences named in
section 7 and any notice shown inside the Game, is the whole agreement between
us about the Game.

**Severability.** If a provision of this Agreement is unenforceable, it is
severed and the rest continues in force.

**No waiver.** If we do not enforce a provision, that is not a waiver of it.

**Changes.** We may publish a new version of this Agreement with a later
version number and date. A new version applies to your use of the Game from the
date it is published with the Game or on its store page; if you do not accept
it, stop using the Game.

**Assignment.** You may not assign this Agreement. We may assign it as part of a
sale or reorganisation of the business, on notice, and provided your rights
under it are not reduced.

**Language.** This Agreement is written in English. A translation may be
provided for convenience; in case of conflict, the English version governs.
