Valve wants the share the QuakeCon love with Team Fortress 2 players. As part of the QuakeCon sale on Steam, each of the classes--soldier, engineer, heavy, and sniper--gets a new toy inspired by Bethesda-related titles.

These items are all bonuses, awarded for either owning or pre-ordering the specific they're drawn from. If any of them sound like things you'd like to add to your Team Fortress 2 player, act quick. QuakeCon ends this Sunday, and the promotion cuts off Monday morning, August 8 at 10am PDT. Sorry, no hats; however, there is an "Anger hood" from Brink and an "Iron helmet" from The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. I guess that sort of counts.

  • Soldier: Buy Quake IV and get "The Original" Quake rocket launcher.

  • Heavy: Pre-purchase The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and get Skyrim's iron helmet.

  • Engineer: Pre-purchase Rage and get "The Wingstick" weapon.

  • Engineer: Buy or own Fallout: New Vegas and get a Pip-Boy.

  • Sniper: Buy or own Brink and get "The Anger" hoodmask.

Valve has been making comics around some of its biggest properties for months for free online, but now the company has partnered with Dark Horse Comics to bring them out in print. Comic Book Resources (via Gamasutra) reports that "Valve Presents: The Sacrifice and Other Steam-Powered Stories" will go on sale November 16 for $29.99.

The collection is a bit pricier than the average comic collection, but it's also more than three-hundred pages long and sports a hardcover. That makes it hard to complain. It will include stories from the worlds of Team Fortress 2, Portal, and Left 4 Dead. All indications are that this is a compilation of comics you can already find online, but it wouldn't surprise us if Valve slipped a bonus or two in there.

Valve is preparing "the most ambitious update in the history of Team Fortress 2." And what's one feature of the update? The game is going to be free to play.

Robin Walker told Develop that the team has been toying with the idea ever since the Mann-conomy update, which introduced an in-game store to the title. The game will be monetized entirely by the various trinkets that can be purchased from the store. "We're not doing any kind of subscription, nor are we taking any features away," Walker insisted.

Valve is hoping that the free-to-play update will encourage a new audience to try the game, something that will also help veterans of the nearly four year old game. "The more players, the more available servers in your area, the wider variety of other players you'll find, the greater the opportunity for new experiences, and so on," Walker explained.

The update also benefits Valve, in that it should expose a larger audience to the Steam platform, and more importantly, the Steam Wallet. "Any player who buys something in TF2's store will then be familiar with the purchasing process used in all these other games, and that removes one of the biggest barriers to entry for them buying something in those other games, and vice versa."

The update is now available.

Today's look at the upcoming Team Fortress 2 'Uber' update focuses on the Soldier class, showing off "not one, not three, but two Soldier class packs" for the gruff class.

Revealed on the game's official blog, the Soldier will earn two updates: The General's Formals and the Airborne Armaments pack--which you can spot in this fancy World War Wednesday poster art.

    The General's Formals pack

  • 'The Mantreads' boots offer a -75% reduction in push force taken from damage and deals 3x falling damage to the player you land on

  • 'The Disciplinary Action' riding crop reduces damage dealt by -25% but boosts ally and personal speed when hitting a player on the same team

  • 'The Liberty Launcher' weapon has a -25% clip size and a +40% projectile speed

    Airborne Armaments pack

  • 'The Reserve Shooter' shotgun with +15% weapon switch speed, mini-crits airborne targets for 3 seconds after switch and -50% clip size

Hidden is yesterday's update was a look at changes coming to the Scout class, which includes three additions:

    The #1 Fan pack

  • 'The Soda Popper' scattergun that earns +25% faster reload speed and +50% faster firing speed, -60% clip size, features no random crits but builds 'hype' has players run around, unleashing mini-crits when the 'hype' meter is full

  • 'The Atomizer' bat that grants players a triple jump, which deals 10 damage, has -30% firing speed and does -20% damage

  • 'The Winger' pistol that hits for +15% more damage but has a -60% smaller clip size

The Team Fortress 2 'Uber' update, along with a 'Meet the Medic' short, is due tomorrow.

For day two of its Team Fortress 2 'Uber Update' reveal, Valve has thoroughly researched the dangerous desert wasteland to pluck out a pair of authentic updates for two of TF2's characters. Today's Valve blog update introduces "Timbuk Tuesday," and showcases new gear for the Sniper and Demoman classes in Team Fortress 2.

The Sniper will receive a new rifle called 'The Bazaar Bargain,' which gives "+10 charge per second" for each consecutive headshot; and 'The Shahanshah' sword, which adds +25% in damage when player health is less than 50% of max and -25% when health is above 50% of max.

The Demoman earns a shield known as 'The Splendid Screen' that adds damage resistance bonuses to fire and explosive damage; 'The Persian Persuader' sword, which turns all collected ammo into health pick-ups; and 'Ali Baba's Wee Booties' shoes, that increases max health among and turning control while charging.

The 'Uber Update' is set to launch on Thursday. Yesterday, Valve revealed Mobster-inspired updates for the Heavy and Spy classes. Full details on the new additions are available on the official Team Fortress 2 blog.

On Thursday, Valve will launch the "biggest, most ambitious update" in the history of its online multiplayer shooter, Team Fortress 2. To prepare for the aptly named "Uber Update," the dev revealed a few choice pieces of information and stealthily teased a special reward for the update's launch.

Team Fortress 2

When the Uber Update arrives on June 23, Valve says it will release a new "Meet the" short for one of the remaining two classes. The company was quick to drop a few subtle hints regarding who would be featured in the video. According to Valve, two major clues for the video are: "It's NOT the Pyro" and "It's the MEDIC."

Shacknews has contacted Valve to confirm our suspicions that the video will revolve around the Pyro*. We just have a feeling we can't shake.

Valve also revealed Team Fortress 2 will be free to play for all users all week, starting now.

The first details on additions in the Uber Update revealed a Mob world theme is coming to Team Fortress 2. "To make sure everything was as accurate as possible, we went deep undercover at the most Italian place we could find, The Olive Garden," the recently redesigned blog notes. We couldn't think of a better place and certainly hope they tried the authentic Italian bread-sticks.

In the update the Heavy will gain access to three new weapons: a minigun with 75% faster, silent spin-up time and 20% slower firing speed dubbed the 'Tomislav'; a shotgun named 'The Family Business' with 40%+ clip size and 15%- damage; and 50% faster, 60% weaker brass knuckles called 'The Eviction Notice.' The Spy nets a 20%+ damage revolver called 'The Enforcer' with 0.5 second increase to cloak; a 30%+ cloak on kill with -25 max health knife dubbed 'The Big Earner'; and a flower ability called 'The Made Man.'

Also on tap for the update is a new Payload map called 'Barn Blitz,' featuring "one outdoor and three indoor capture points (including a final indoor capture point)." Check out the update poster art for more details.

*Yes, I'm aware it's not the Pyro.

Amidst all the E3 hubbub, the winners of the year's most prestigious awards show were announced yesterday--the Team Fortress 2 Saxxy Awards. The Saxxies were created to the launch of its video editing tools, encouraging players to make their own home movies for a wide variety of award categories.

Valve did indeed make good on its promise of giving winners "a foot-high bust of an almost entirely naked Australian man," awarding them their very own Saxxy. An in-game weapon usable by all classes, the Saxxy possess a terrible power to turn all those it strikes down into solid gold--much like the Golden Wrench.

Do check out all of the winners, but here's a little teaser--the winner in the 'Best Overall' category, 'El Muchacho Trailer' by XLR.

Public voting has now opened in the Saxxy Awards, the Team Fortress 2 video contest created by Valve to celebrate the recent launch of its video editing tools.

There's also a treat for fans of Old Man Murray, the fabulous video games site written by Chet Faliszek and Erik Wolpaw before they worked at Valve. Yes, the voting was opened in a blog post written by OMM's official Adventure Gaming Mascot, Francis the Talking France. Those cheeky fellows!

You won't have to watch hundreds of entries to vote, as it simply shows you two videos from a category and asks which you should think of the two. You can them compare another two videos. And another two. Until you've had enough. Presumably, someone at Valve will apply some sort of mathematics to the results to find the winners.

Valve has spoken of presenting the winners with "a foot-high bust of an almost entirely naked Australian man"--TF2 extended fiction character Saxton Hale--and we certainly hope that's not a joke.
