When the eventual 87-volume book series about my life is written, there will be four tomes and one young adult fiction romance spinoff about stories I chose to write entirely because of headline pun potential. BUT HERE’S THE TWIST: this won’t be one of them. Much as I adore (and gladly take) every opportunity to reference Michael Jordan and> Bugs Bunny’s final career-defining blazes of glory, not even Space Jam can match my love for, er, space. So it’s basically amazing to see NASA using games to draw more attention to space exploration – especially in light of the fact that people seem determined to ignore it even though it’s perhaps literally the most interesting, mysterious, compelling thing in existence.

Like a boss

The amount of money a game/software developer makes shouldn’t really be the first thing you say about them, but sometimes you’ve got to make an exception. For instance, Garry’s Mod developer Garry Newman, who recently revealed that his physics-abusing, face-mutilating Half-Life 2 mod has brought in $22 million to date. It’s about time he and Notch had a riches-off, I think. While I don’t think anyone could claim he’s not in the Sickeningly Wealthy bracket, he does claim that the lion’s share of this doesn’t reach the Gmod team’s gold-lined pockets. (more…)

I want a pony for Christmas!

Gabe Newell doesn’t just spend his time making himself look like Austrian Santa Claus – he also heads up gaming software titan Valve. And, soon, gaming hardware titan Valve. Their ‘Steambox‘ PC-as-a-console concept isn’t a secret anymore, and indeed Newell now claims the first units might well be in the wild within the next three to four months. (more…)

Happy, freezing, starving, terrified soldiers

One of the many unhappy aspects of the death (sort of – the name still exists and I wouldn’t be terribly surprised to see it return in some form later on) of THQ is that it had several projects really very close to completion when the axe fell. Foremost, perhaps, of those were Metro: Last Light and snow-bound WW2 strategy game Company of Heroes 2, but fortunately (we hope) both have found new homes. Metro’s with Koch, and Company of Heroes 2 is with SEGA, as is all of Relic – making the house of hedgehog, who also own the Creative Assembly, an unlikely bastion of real-time strategy.

If you mind is keen, like the edge of a freshly sharpened bayonet, you will remember top-down real-time tactics game Running With Rifles. That game is still in development, of course, but that development is bearing the fruit of considerable progress. Not only does it look at least twice as fetching as it looked the last time I used my eyes on it, but it also now boasts co-op stealth happenings, as you can see in a new video, below. Developer Pasi Kainiemi explains: ” We got into playing RWR all sneaky and set out to find the enemy comms truck. It almost got away at the latter part of the video when we failed to stay unnoticed, fun stuff.” And it is. (more…)

It’s no surprise whatsoever that inXile’s PlaneScape: Torment spiritual sequel would hitch itself to the Kickstarter mast. Because, er, they always said it would. That Kickstarter is now live, live, live, as Torment: Tides of Numenera sings for its $900,000 supper for the next month or so.

Update: 15 minutes after launching, they’ve made $50,000 $70,000 already. Bloody Nora!Update 2: Less than two hours from launch, Torment’s at over $300,000. Seems unlikely this one won’t make it, eh? (more…)

Once upon a time, flight simulators were the most tantalising, promise-filled facet of nascent PC gaming. First-person perspectives were the bleeding edge of software entertainment and, at that point, sticking a gun in that first person-perspective had yet to achieve the total dominance it has now. (A first-person perspective never was the only way to play a flight sim, of course, but at the time it seemed like the most thrilling one, as the skies and clouds hurtled across peripheral vision, the ground loomed and zoomed dangerously into sight and rival planes threatened to fly directly into our eyeballs.)

I thought, even post-Wolfenstein, that flying a pretend aeroplane was the single most exciting concept I’d ever heard of. Apart from flying a real aeroplane, anyway. (more…)

MechWarrior Online BZZZZZTT –MAJOR UPDATE– Juggada-guggada-beeeeeooooooooooo. I speak fluent Giant Robot. The freebie stompy robots game has just added another new batch of content, which includes yet another mech to charge about in, and a tutorial zone called Testing Grounds.
