Oh, marketing. Attaching a line to your Star Trek Making Of video that says “The Ultimate Co-op Experience” is just asking for trouble, isn’t it? I know I barely get to be in charge of anything in this universe, but in this case I’d definitely have gone for “Look, Spock and Kirk Can Hold Each Other.” And they can, as the video explained: it had to be a co-op game, because Kirk and Spock are opposites who attract. I mean, they don’t fist-bump, but do have each others backs. So to speak.
“Gameplay” isn’t a particularly useful word at the best of times, but in the case of game trailers it tends to mean seeing the game as it might be played. In the case of a racing game, for example, in a cockpit view. Or, hell, in a third-person view where you’re actually controlling the action, rather than passively watching it. This Grid 2 trailer shows a lot of computer cars racing around a computer circuit, which could literally be the game being played. But is that gameplay? There are a few seconds of this trailer which might be a bumper-cam view of the game being played, but even then it’s without the UI you might expect to accompany a genuine piece of “gameplay” footage. The investigative documentary style of Bioshock: Infinite’s Modern Day Icarus videos tickles my pleasure-nodes. The earlier reveals of the clockwork catastrophes and mechanical malignancies that roam Columbia are failures of imagination in contrast, and anyone fortunate enough to have instigated some form of media blackout regarding the game last year would be well-advised to continue that policy, with a glimmering exception for these informative and menacing reels. The first covers the vanishing of the city and the second, below, contains dark children’s rhymes and the sinister Songbird.
Obsidian’s a company that’s always stricken me as bizarrely restless. Despite its near-legendary Black Isle legacy, the Project Eternity and South Park developer’s rarely had an easy time finding a comfortable place in the industry. But then, when you think about it, that’s not entirely surprising. Both RPGs and storytelling in games – Obsidian’s wheelhouses – have spent countless years in constant flux. And though recent times and a massively successful Kickstarter have given the developer some solid ground to stand on, the eager hands of change are once again threatening to yank the rug out from under it. Uncertainty’s permeated the entire industry as of late, but Obsidian CEO Feargus Urquhart has no intention of blindly following the future. His plan? To redefine the whole RPG genre. During the recent DICE Summit in Las Vegas, he and I chatted about that.
It is Friday. Very little is happening, because that’s how Fridays work. But there’s a reason for that: everyone’s exhausted. It’s been a long week of whatever it is you actually do, and while you’re normally some grand mover-and-shaker or titan of industry, today you’re almost out of steam. Thanks to a pair of heavily patched barrage balloons and an antique ex-Latvian Army Bofors gun, yesterday passed uneventfully in the Flare Path household. Using the derelict abattoir across the valley as cover, Cupid tried one pop-up attack, but a flurry of 40mm fury quickly sent him packing. “The little rascal really needs to work on his tactics” I thought to myself as, back at my desk, I perused correspondence from Eagle Dynamics’ Matt Wagner and KillHouse Games’ Dan Dimitrescu. “Either that or trade-in those arrows for Brimstones.” (more…)
The Dreamfall Chapters Kickstarter is closing in on $800,000 and that means it’s time for the announcement of stretch goals. The first will be unlocked at $900,000 and there’s an image below that may contain a clue, as well as details on the rest. Last night’s update also included the first footage of the current prototype, which shows a placeholder Zoe avatar, still wearing her old threads, exploring the Riverwood environment shown in the image above (click to embiggen). It’s early footage but attractive – far more intriguing than the trees and the flowers is the first look at the ‘hybrid’ interface. Third person movement, with freedom to explore, and a cursor for interaction.
In recent years, Valve hasn’t proven too terribly consistent when it comes to, well, anything (cases in point: the recent ire-inducing layoffs, allegedly being a videogame company), but it can lay claim to one spotless record: Steam sales. If there’s an occasion, you can bet crazy Newell’s game, productivity software, wearable computing, and probably soon-to-be used car emporium will be on the spot to wheel and deal. Naturally, then, Steam Linux’s triumphant exit from beta is being heralded by a gigantic, Linux-centric sale. March past the break in a manner akin to that of a penguin for details.
