NCSoft’s next big MMO, Wildstar, has been quiet for the best part of the year, and this is of course because it’s been on a fantastic voyage to the bottom of the sea, tutoring giant squid, blue whales and starfish in the ways of levelling up and crafting. Either that or they wanted to develop a load more of the game before showing it off again. I went to see and play Carbine Studios’ sci-fi/fantasy mash-up, which aims to be a deconstruction and then new reconstruction of MMORPG tropes, last week, and I’ll have a full report on that for you late next week.

In the meantime, today they’re telling the world about one of their two opposing, tri-race factions, and pledging to get the game out in 2013. (more…)

Is that Surprised Cthulu?

I’ve totally missed the critical reception to Skyrim add-on Dragonborn, but operating on the no news is good news principle I’ll presume that people aren’t generally wanting to kill it with fire. Or maybe they’re still locked in shocked, appalled silence. I’ll find out very soon, as the PC version of the Morrowind-set, dragon power-boosting DLC is now available. (more…)

It’s not all doom and despair in game publishing, you know. While we’ve seen the very sad loss of THQ, and are surrounded by reports of others in lots of trouble, Take Two have just announced a increase in revenues of a whopping 244%. That’s a milliontysquillionty pounds, and it’s in a year without a GTA game to send their shares rocketing. That’s impressive stuff, especially for a publisher known to struggle without Rockstar’s powerhouse on the schedule, and it’s thanks to Borderlands 2, NBA 2K13 and XCOM: Enemy Unknown. Oh, and the FPS XCOM is still a thing.

Cadenza’s six-axis FPS hasn’t taken the easy path. But via its circuitous route Retrovirus is now out on Steam for about £14, and I’ve pew-pewed my way to the very end. With massive improvements since the last time we saw it, just wot will I think?>

Last century’s best science fiction tropes really do seem to be the water this week, with Blendo Games putting out a trailer for Quadrilateral Cowboy that subtitles it “20th Century Cyberpunk”. The gentle trailer of infiltration and hacking is explained like so: “When you have a top-of-the-line hacking deck armed with a 56.6k modem and a staggering 256k RAM, it means just one thing: you answer only to the highest bidder.”

EA employees attack yet another customer.

Here’s what’s great about reality: people are great at breaking stupid stuff. So as Dead Space 3 launched yesterday in the Americas, people smarter than I had already figured out a glitch in the game to acquire all the items EA had hoped you’d pay for. Game Front have posted a video explaining how, which I’ve diligently included below.

A few more details have emerged on The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, without having to read the scans of some store-owned magazine or other to which they’ve inanely restricted their promotional material. (Oh, gaming industry, you are infinitely idiotic.) Wild Hunt will be CDPR’s last ever Witcher game, they’ve declared, but this time in an open world “larger than any other in modern RPG history”.

Mechwarrior Online has updated with a new mech, the 80-tonne Pretty Baby, which is detailed in a video which you can watch below. There’s also a big update from the devs on what’s going on with the game generally, including performance tweaks and a new map.
