Battlefield Hardline, EA's "most poorly planned heist ever" sim, is getting a new update in March called Betrayal. Based on the description, it's about things going even more wrong after they've already gone really wrong. It will also, assuming the screenshot included with the announcement is accurate, literally let you bring a knife to a gunfight.

You've assembled a crew, pulled off the perfect heist, and made a whirlwind escape from the police, EA said in the expansion announcement. Now, there are enemies lurking in the frozen shadows, dark figures hiding behind crumbling mausoleums, and confrontations brewing in back alleys and federal prisons.

Betrayal will include four new maps—Alcatraz, Cemetery, Chinatown, and Thin Ice—plus seven new weapons and two new vehicles. The Gun Bench Super Feature will enable customization of primary weapons and uniforms, which can then be tested at the Gun Range, and there will also be new Assignments and Legendary weapon camos.

Battlefield Hardline itself is being updated as well, with 11 new weapons, new server presets, and the addition of weapon license vouchers to all Gold Battlepacks that will unlock an entire weapon license. Full details about the update will be released when it goes live. If we're lucky, there'll be something in there about the practicalities of bringing a claymore to a bank robbery, too.

It is the season of greetings cards, gifts, and making something out of Valentine s Day because even if you don t feel like you have to you probably should, you know? This is a quiet weekend in the kingdom of electric sports, however, as the majority of the world's pro scenes busy themselves with a variety of first-round qualifiers for tournaments that will inevitably all be held on the same weekend in March. You re not totally without pro gaming entertainment options, however, as the highly-recommended DotaCinema Captain s Draft tournament plunges into its playoffs, the League of Legends NA LCS returns, and the Acer Predator Masters Series concludes in Germany. Go on, treat yourself: lie down in a bed of rose petals and watch some teenagers earn thousands of dollars playing a game that you re terrible at. Happy Valentines!

Dota 2: DotaCinema Captain's Draft 3.0

Captain's Draft 3.0 is a not-so-serious tournament with a serious prize pool: in excess of $120,000 at the time of writing. It stars internationally-renowned Dota 2 squads, but they don't compete in the traditional Captain's Mode format. Instead, the games use Captain's Draft—a variant on CM with a random selection of 27 heroes available to both teams. This means that players are forced out of the current metagame and into parts of the Dota roster that they'd never otherwise venture. This weekend will see a bunch of early playoff matches. On Saturday, the semifinals match between Alliance and Vega Squadron will begin at 15:00 CET (14:00 GMT/06:00 PST), followed by lower bracket matches between Liquid and DC as well as Virtus.pro and Mamas Boys. Those matches will determine who plays in the second round of lower bracket games on Sunday, starting at 17:00 CET (16:00 GMT/08:00 PST.) Find more information and the stream at Moonduck.tv.

League of Legends: 2016 NA LCS

The League of Legends Championship Series rumbles on in North America this weekend. It's been a dramatic start to the year, as our LoL correspondent James Chen has been documenting in his column. As pressure mounts, will the Immortals continue to perform? Will the rest of the scene catch up? How long can Chris keep cribbing his LoL notes from James before somebody realises that this bit is being written by a Dota guy? We ll find out this weekend. Expect full days of play on both Saturday and Sunday, with matches beginning at 20:00 GMT/12:00 PST on both days. Find more information and the live broadcast on LoLesports.

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive: Acer Predator Masters Season 2

The line-up falls slightly short of top-tier, but there's $40,000 on the line anyway. This weekend will see the remaining playoffs for the Acer Predator Masters Season 2 played in Germany. Tune in for the remainder of the upper bracket and most of the lower one on Saturday from 13:00 CET (12:00 GMT/04:00 PST), with the lower bracket final and grand final to be played on Sunday starting at 14:30 CET (13:30 GMT/05:30 PST.) The English language stream is right here

Hearthstone 2016 European Winter Preliminaries

Over the course of Saturday and Sunday up to 184 EU-based 'stoners will be battling it out for spots at the European Winter Championships next month. This reddit survival guide thread breaks down everything you need to know, but the key points are that Frodan will be casting alongside Kibler, Savjz and PC Gamer contributor Sottle. It's being streamed in English on the main twitch.tv/playhearthstone channel, but the thread also lists other language options. The action starts at 14:00 CET (13:00 GMT/5:00 PST) on both days. May the SMOrc be with you, always.

If the Australian Government's videogame classifiers have it right, we may soon be hearing about yet another installment of Dead Island-branded zombie-splattering good times. The classification site recently listed a new game called Dead Island Retro Revenge, which it slapped with an M rating for bloody violence and online interactivity.

Australia's game rating site doesn't serve up quite the same kind of joyously juicy details as our ESRB, but it does indicate that the game is being published by Koch Media, the parent company of Deep Silver, and that it's being developed by Empty Clip Studios. Empty Clip created the Rapid Fire Engine used in Monaco: What's Yours Is Mine, did an end-to-end port of Bit.Trip Core, and also developed the 2012 indie hit Symphony. Last summer the studio announced that it had begun work on a sequel to Symphony entitled Symphony Worlds, which is expected to be out early this year.

2015 wasn't a very good year for the Dead Island franchise: Dead Island 2 was delayed and then lost its developer, and the Dead Island: Epidemic MOBA was shut down in October before it even had a chance to get out of Early Access. Hopefully 2016 will go a little more smoothly. I've contacted Deep Silver for confirmation, or at least a spot of clarity, and I'll update if I receive a reply.

Thanks, Destructoid.

The Culling

The Culling, announced last week, is a little bit Rust and a little bit Running Man: 16 players crammed into a tropical island paradise with nothing but crafting resources and 20 minutes to kill each other dead. It's being developed by Xaviant, the studio behind Lichdom: Battlemage, and it sounds like good, murderous fun, even though it's still very early in the development process. Which brings me to the point. A closed alpha is coming, and you may now sign up to take part.

Launching a Closed Alpha will allow the community to have an active role in The Culling s development. Xaviant founder and CEO Michael McMain said. The feedback gathered from the test will ensure that we are able to deliver the reliable and balanced experienced our players deserve.

The difference between a closed alpha and a closed beta is a bit hazy but I think has to do primarily with lower expectations, which is to say that a beta will run reasonably well in most cases, while an alpha is more or less a success as long as it doesn't set your PC on fire.

In this particular case, Xaviant is looking for help stress-testing our server infrastructure and identifying other issues we may have missed prior to the Early Access launch on Steam. The studio clarified that taking part in the alpha will not entitle you to a copy of the Early Access release, and asked that everyone please ensure they meet the minimum system requirements before signing up. Fortunately, they are fairly undemanding:

  • OS: 64-Bit OS Required: Win7 SP1, Windows 8.1, or Windows 10
  • Processor: Intel Core i3 560 / AMD Phenom2 X4 945
  • Memory: 4 GB RAM
  • Graphics: DX11 GPU with 1GB VRAM: NVidia GTX 460/ AMD Radeon 5850
  • DirectX: Version 11
  • Network: Broadband Internet connection
  • Storage: 8 GB available space

The Culling will go live on Early Access on March 8 and sell for $15/ 15, which doesn't really seem fair, with a ten percent discount offered from March 8-14.

Update: Xaviant has issued a statement explaining why the price for The Culling is the same in both dollars and pounds, which results in UK customers paying a premium of more than 25 percent. Our Euro and GBP pricing follows the Steam store s standard recommended conversions, which account for the value-added tax levied in those countries," Producer Josh Van Veld said. "We feel that The Culling is a bargain at those prices and we hope fans worldwide will agree.

Don't try this at home

Most Chromebooks are pretty rugged, as they have to be in order to withstand the daily rigors of school age children treating them like regular objects. Even so, we wouldn't recommend standing on top of one, not unless you're looking to crush the screen for some odd reason.

That attempt might not work with CTL's new NL6X Extra-Rugged Chromebook for Education (just NL6X from here on out). This thing's been fortified with a pressure-resistant cover (doubles as a whiteboard) and reinforced corners. The result? CTL claims that in-house testing showed it can survive up to a 365-pound person standing on top of the thing.

It's not really a silly demonstration. Classrooms are increasingly congested and it doesn't take a lot of imagination to envision one of these things being stepped on because little Billy laid it down next to his backpack on the floor.

The laptop is also drop resistant up to 70cm, has a non-slip texture, features reinforced ports and hinges, boasts a stronger and thicker rear cover and frame to absorb shocks, and has a water-resistant keyboard with anti-peel keys.

Other specs and features include an 11.6-inch display with a 1366x768 resolution, Intel Celeron N2940 processor, 4GB of RAM, 16GB eMMC, 802.11ac Wi-Fi + Bluetooth 4.05, 720p webcam, full-size HDMI port, USB 3.0 and 2.0 ports (one each), 2-in-1 card reader, and of course Chrome OS.

CTL's NL6X is available now for $269.

Building an IoT development platform

The fast growing Internet of Things (IoT) market is ripe with opportunities for developers, though several of the solutions are based on ARM's architecture, like the Raspberry Pi. That's not inherently a bad thing, but for developers needing more power and not wanting to venture out of their comfort zones, which might lie in x86, there aren't quite as many solutions.

Canonical and Intel want to change that. They've been working together to create a standard platform for developers to test and create x86-based IoT solutions using Ubuntu Core, and now the first Ubuntu Core images for Intel's NUC DE3815TY are available to download.

"We focused on the Intel NUC for its relatively low cost point for a starter platform (around $150) and broad availability (you can even find them on Amazon!). This affordable device running Ubuntu Core offers a simple developer experience, making embedded development accessible to all with a deployment ready edge computing option for IoT," Canonical stated in a blog post.

While a NUC is more expensive than a Raspberry Pi, this pairing gives developers a more powerful solution to work with.

"The Intel NUC DE3815TY is an ideal IOT development platform! It s got enough computing power to prototype for all embedded use cases with an Intel Atom processor. It also offers a lot of IOs and configuration options: USB ports, I2C ports, 4Gb eMMC and the possibility to add a wireless card, up to 8G of RAM and a 2.5 inch HDD or SSD," Canonical adds.

Canonical lists off several potential applications for a solution like this, including digital displays and retail kiosks. They could be used as Bluetooth beacons, people counting devices, and much more, depending on the apps installed.

Ubuntu Core, also known as Snappy, is a stripped down version of Ubuntu designed to run on autonomous machines, devices, and IoT gadgets in general. One of the major keys to Ubuntu Core is its app architecture, which is part of a larger modular design. Applications that run in Snappy are called Snapps and they run within the context for frameworks—each Snapp is packaged and deployed in an isolated directory on the filesystem.

Canonical just recently published its 15.04 Snappy image and will release a 16.04 LTS version for Intel's NUC within the next few months.

We covered Heroes of the Storm s Dragon Shire a couple of weeks ago, and it only seems natural to move on to the other map with a monstrous player-controlled siege weapon: the Garden of Terror. As one of the maps that forces players to fight neutral monsters in the jungle, it s not just about fighting the enemy heroes, but knowing when and how to explore the fog of war safely.

The basics

One of the larger maps, Garden of Terror features three lanes with two expansive areas between them. It s too large for characters to regularly roam for experience. Instead, teams need to maintain at least one person in each lane at all times to keep up with levels. Given that fighting neutral jungle monsters is important for all characters on this map, heroes that can clear out minions and monsters safely are highly sought after.

Minions and monsters

As of a recent patch, 'monsters have been specifically defined as battleground-specific creatures, while minions remain as they were.

Garden of Terror s objective is to collect 100 seeds from neutral monsters to allow your team to spawn your own Garden Terror, a player-controlled sieging unit. In order to facilitate the objective, Garden of Terror has a day/night mechanic, where seed-dropping terrors spawn between the lanes every night. There are no Dota 2-style mechanical changes at night—it just affects which monsters spawn.

Picking your hero

While being able to focus down the enemy Garden Terror is important, heroes with any sort of area of effect ability are highly sought after in Garden of Terror along with heroes that can safely explore the fog of war. Some of the top picks are Leoric, Johanna, Kael Thas, and Jaina.

To make sure your team doesn t accidentally run into a trap when entering the jungle s fog of war, supports like Tassadar, Tyrande, and Malfurion are useful as they all have abilities that can be used to scout the map and reveal enemies.

Being a large map where the team regularly has to leave lanes for objectives in the jungle, The Lost Vikings can do well—but they re also an incredibly challenging hero to play well. If you re a master of The Lost Vikings, give them a shot. Their ability to soak experience from three lanes at once is perfect for Garden of Terror.

Laning

There are two ways teams most often play the laning phase in Garden of Terror. The first is for three players to solo lane while a pair roam together (often two heroes with a bit of sustain and lockdown), while the other is to have a 1/2/2 or 1/3/1 split. Having a pair of roaming heroes is useful for putting the team ahead, but risks falling behind on experience if the enemy can push an ally out of lane. Keeping a 1/2/2 or 1/3/1 split between lanes often ensures maximum possible experience gain. Check your team composition and arrange yourselves accordingly.

Your goal is to be ahead in experience or with your minions knocking on enemy turrets when the night starts, giving you and your allies a headstart in seed collection.

After night falls

There s a short 30 second timer before day turns to night on Garden of Terror, after which you need to be in position to collect seeds.

There are a total of 180 seeds available each night, so while it s possible to get enough for a Garden Terror, the nature of the map s two identical sides means a stalemate of 90 seeds for each team is common. If you re not confident in your team s early game fighting potential, focus on either the top or bottom side of the map and clear it out. You ll match the enemy on a clean 90 seeds, both of you prepared for the next night.

The neutral monsters, also called Garden Terrors, exist in two varieties: packs of three small ones, of which there are four on the map, and large bosses, one on either side. It shouldn t take long to clear out the small Garden Terrors on your own, and each one drops five seeds. The boss, however, requires the team to work together. It deals massive damage on each attack, and has two abilities: one which stuns and deals damage to units around it, and one which roots and damages units caught over time. Each boss drops a whopping 60 seeds!

The Garden Terror rises!

If you ve collected 100 seeds, a teammate needs to go back to the fountain and collect it. Similar the Dragon Knight, this should usually be one of your tanks or a specialist. The Garden Terror s abilities are:

Passive: Terror of the Garden—crowd control effects are halved in their duration

Q: Queen s Curse—transforms enemies in a target area into plants, decreasing their movement speed drastically and preventing them from attacking or using abilities.

W: Overgrowth—spread vegetation in the target area that disables nearby structures and deals heavy damage to enemy structures, minions, and mercenaries. It loses health over time and can be destroyed by the enemy.

E: Sprint—gives the Garden Terror a speed boost.

R: Leave Garden Terror—allows the player to leave the Garden Terror.

AppropriateVigilantBunny (gfyCat video)

The Garden Terror s massive damage output not only destroys structures quickly, but it can also stop them from retaliating if its Overgrowth is left untouched. When playing as the Garden Terror, use Sprint to get into lanes quickly, and put your Overgrowth in roughly the position below. This means it will damage the fort, turrets, walls, fountain and gate simultaneously.

Use Queen s Curse to disrupt enemies that are trying to destroy your Overgrowth. Early on in the game, when towers are still up, rotate between lanes as the Garden Terror to destroy all the turrets rather than focusing on one lane. You re not invincible, and the Overgrowth cooldown is long. If it s destroyed quickly, back off or Sprint to a new lane while the cooldown ticks away.

When an ally is playing as the Garden Terror, try to defend its Overgrowth: with the recent buffs to turret, fort, and keep damage, ensuring that they re unable to attack is paramount.

If the enemy is using their Garden Terror, forget attacking it. Whenever Overgrowth is placed, you need to take it out fast. As soon as its Overgrowth is down, keep your assassins and specialists on the Garden Terror, with your supports and warriors disrupting the enemy team. Watch your positioning, though—while it s a siege unit, the Garden Terror can quickly take out a weak hero with a few attacks or slow them enough for their team to collapse on you.

At the break of dawn

After the Garden Terrors are dead and gone, teams will return to their lanes and prepare for the next night. After the first night, it s good to consider using your mercenaries—by capturing them just before night falls, you ll force the enemy into either surrendering a structure or losing seeds in the jungle.

Garden of Terror stands out in that it s one of few maps where it s nigh-impossible to completely prevent the enemy from taking an objective. They will, eventually, get a Garden Terror of their own, and a cocky team can lose their edge if they don t respect its power. No matter how far ahead you are, never let an enemy Garden Terror attack your structures uninhibited.

A back and forth will usually occur, with teams alternating between getting the Garden Terror and defending from the enemy s each night. Try to pull ahead in experience by getting your Garden Terror first and ensuring the enemy s isn t used to its full potential. You ll get your Garden Terror eventually. Even if you miss an opportunity to do summon one, as long as you use it more effectively than your opponent you ll pull ahead. Don t risk your whole team for a couple of seeds!

In short: nurture those seeds and Overgrowths and become a green-fingered victor in the Garden of Terror!

Clearing up confusion

There's seems to some confusion swirling around the release of Quantum Break, which was once touted as an Xbox One exclusive. That's no longer case—it's also shipping to Windows 10 PCs, and if you pre-order a copy for Xbox One before it launches on April 5th, you'll receive a complimentary copy for Windows 10 (plus a few other goodies, including Alan Wake on Xbox One).

That's a spiffy deal, especially if you have a teenager or someone else in the household that prefers consoles to PCs (as if!). This way you both win. Also, the game supports cross-platform saves, but not cross-platform play (it's a single-player title).

As for what it takes to run Quantum Break on PC, Remedy initially listed some pretty heavy hitting hardware for the recommended specs, including a GeForce GTX 980 Ti. That's a $650ish graphics card, though Remedy later clarified that its initial list was for running the game at Ultra graphics settings—phew!

Here's a look at the updated systems requirements across the board:

Minimum

  • OS: Windows 10 (64-bit)
  • DirectX: DirectX 12
  • CPU: Intel Core i5-4460 (2.7GHz) or AMD FX-6300
  • GPU: Nvidia GeForce GTX 760 or AMD Radeon R7 260X
  • VRAM: 2GB
  • RAM: 8GB

Recommended

  • OS: Windows 10 (64-bit)
  • DirectX: DirectX 12
  • CPU: Intel Core i5-4690 (3.9GHz) or AMD equivalent
  • GPU: Nvidia GeForce GTX 970 or AMD Radeon R9 390
  • VRAM: 4GB
  • RAM: 16GB

Ultra

  • OS: Windows 10 (64-bit)
  • DirectX: DirectX 12
  • CPU: Intel Core i7-4790(4GHz) or AMD equivalent
  • GPU: Nvidia GeForce GTX 980 Ti or AMD Radeon R9 Fury X
  • VRAM: 6GB
  • RAM: 16GB

That's still some potent hardware for the recommended configuration, but much more manageable than what Remedy says you'll need to run the game at Ultra settings.

The other highlight here is the DirectX 12 requirement. That means if you're wanting to play Quantum Break on PC but are content with Windows 7 or 8.1, then yes, you'll have to upgrade to Windows 10—womp womp.
