As we reach the end of October, we wanted to pass along news of the next patch, as well as an update for those anticipating a revised & accessible roadmap for early access!
Our next patch will be coming November 27th! Expect this update to focus on improving AI and combat. Shortly after, on December 4th, weâll provide you the new living roadmap, alongside greater detail about the NEXT update which will be the first to feature new content & objectives!
We will be releasing updates at a wider cadence going forward for the sake of efficiency. For a little additional context on these dates, check out my super professional video here:
I sent this video to the directors for review, and their response was, and I quote: "What is an acceptable level of cringe. Scientifically." Let us know if you have shriveled into a raisin while watching this video. Fax them your opinions.
Thanks for playing with us and continuing to support us in our early access development. The best is yet to come! As for me, Iâll continue improving how we share updates on the gameâs development to you all! For now, hereâs some bits of work happening in the background:
BTS Developments
Early this month, our animator had gone back to improve glide, particularly the weaponed stance. The main detail he adjusted was the wrist and head, lowering the position so they align better with the movement animations. He says while the work isnât challenging, it is time consuming because he has to make manual adjustments for all the weapons, including all flight directions and speeds.
Our environmental artist is working on new foliage! Tree types are first created with specific branch, trunk, and leaf proportions. Once a tree typeâs visual style is established, different size variations are created using the same rules applied to the parent tree. An asset that can be chopped down is complex compared to a flower that can simply be picked. A tree requires around 20 assets working together in game to accomplish our chopping mechanic. The colored clusters shown here visualize groupings and hierarchies in the tree that are used for wind animations.
Our stone doorways recently got doors attached, thank goodness, but did you notice the detail of the different sounds for the different door types. If you didnât, its probably because our audio directorâs really good at his job. As you guys know, he records all the sound effects himself! He sent me a whole bunch of clips of his original audio capture, testing to find the right sounds for the doors.
As mentioned in the video, some enemies may now be roaming the map, so youâll have to be extra vigilant. The soldiers on the Isle of Arrival, in particular, are extra scary when youâre still starting off and crafting decent gear. Hereâs a small glimpse at your future playthrough:
As a treat for spooky season, hereâs a new recording for a fun addition coming to our November patch. I will be providing no further context. What do you think it is?
BUILDABLES POLL
While thatâs the last of the behind the scenes previews for now, we do have one thing to ask of you! If youâre a fan of building in Dawn of Defiance and anxiously awaiting more build pieces and decor, please swing by this poll weâve started that compiles the various buildable-related requests weâve seen! We ask that you vote on the types of buildables youâd most like to see (or see first).
PLEASE NOTE: The conclusion of this poll does not guarantee these buildables will be included in the next couple updates, but it will help our art team get a sense of which items players are most excited about. Plus, just because we're polling players on buildables, that does not mean buildables & decor are our highest priority at the minute. This is one of many things being worked on!
You can vote in Discord here. Disclaimer, the following poll link only works if you're an existing Discord member with Defier permissions: Discord Poll.
If you don't like Discord, you can also vote in the Steam Discussions post here: Discussions Poll.

Thatâs all for todayâs news, but Iâll see you again later this week with our Temple Tracker âHaunted Crossingâ build submissions and clips of the Playtrials: Tides of Triumph relay race! If we donât catch you then, have a wonderful rest of your month and get excited for the update in November!
During weekly maintenance a new event will be added and Server Transfers will be enabled for Ignite players to move to Legacy Servers. Downtime will begin on October 30 at 12am PT (7am UTC) and is expected to last 5 hours. Learn about the new event and transfer experience below.
Mokoko Bootcamp Event
The Mokoko Bootcamp Event runs from October 30th to January 15th, 2025 and is designed to encourage veteran players to play dungeons with new or returning players. New and returning players whose highest Item Level character on their account is below Item Level 1660 can earn "Mokoko Tokens" for completing dungeons during the event period. These new and returning players will have a "green leaf" icon in the recruitment panel. Green leaf Mokoko players will be those who meet one of the following conditions:
A new account that has been created within the event period
Accounts that have been created within 60 days before the event start date
Accounts with a previous Login Date over 60 days before the event start date
Once a player acquires the âgreen leafâ, it will persist until the end of the event, but will expire when any of the characters in that playerâs account is over Item Level 1660.
Veteran players, defined as active players not belonging to the categories above, can earn "Expert Tokens" when they complete dungeons together with the new/returning players. Both the Mokoko Tokens and Expert Tokens can then be exchanged for rewards, with the number of Tokens earned varying based on which specific dungeons are completed. As long as there is at least one new/returning player in the group, the entire team qualifies to earn the respective Tokens.
The reward tables will be slightly different for new players and returning players, but both reward tables will have both weekly and once-per-roster items. Both groups will have access to honing materials and even Metallurgy/Tailoring: Hellfire honing books to help hone in Tier 4. Mokoko Tokens will better help newer players get caught up on things like cards and other methods of progression. The Expert Tokens will grant endgame items, including a Relic Engraving Selection chest, and a âMokoko Generalâ title with a special icon title for helping new players out!
Ignite Server Transfer
The transfer window allowing Ignite players to transfer a single character to Legacy servers will open with the update, and will remain open until November 25. There are two types of transfers: Roster Transfer (better for new players) - move some roster level information to a server without an existing roster, along with the chosen character. Character Transfer (better for returning or active players) - merge your chosen Ignite character into an existing roster.
Weâre excited to welcome new and returning Ignite players to Legacy Servers as reinforcements in the fight against Kazeros. New threats will be able to be challenged in the North Kurzan storyline, Behemoth Epic Raid, and the Echidna and Aegir Kazeros Raids. In the meantime, weâll see you in Arkesia!
Just writing a quick post to let you know I've uploaded a new build of the game. The build fixes a handful of typos which were pointed out by very kind readers on my Discord server, fixes one incorrectly placed sprite, and also makes the chronology of the story a little clearer.
I also edited all of Aster's interactions with Angelique, since some people were turned off by how caustic his internal narration is at points. He's still pretty snippy, but it got pared down a little. The story is supposed to be light-hearted and silly, and I don't want it inadvertently upsetting anybody.
As always, let me know if you find more typos or issues, and I will try to fix things in a reasonable amount of time.
A little over a year ago we launched Lords of the Fallen, calling upon you to take up the mantle of âDark Crusaderâ in our ambitious dark fantasy action-RPG.
As youâve journeyed across Mournstead and its dual realms of Axiom and Umbral, weâve worked closely with the Lords of the Fallen community to continue enhancing the experience, implementing a significant number of your suggestions. These include reducing mob density, adding gamepad rebinding, implementing PvE and PvP balancing, and rolling out comprehensive optimization, to name but a few.
Your feedback has been invaluable, and weâre pleased to confirm that further improvements to Lords of the Fallen will be coming very soon.
In the meantime, to mark these past twelve months in Mournstead, we wanted to look back over our shared journey to date...
October 2023 â Season of the Bleak
Firstly, a timely reminder with Halloween just days away, that the permanent otherworldly quest âSeason of the Bleakâ was added to the game just days after launch. This pumpkin-spiced questline, which tasked players to collect six pumpkins scattered across Mournstead before confronting the Spirit of the Bleak mini-boss, was the first of several added to Lords of the Fallen as part of our post-launch content roadmap, setting the tone for what was to come.
If youâre yet to claim your orange-hued helm, but donât know where to start, keep eyes peeled for our how-to guide on October 31st.
October 2023 â Post-launch roadmap
Not long after the gameâs release, we shared our post-launch, free content roadmap that outlined our plans for the game. In addition to continuing our regular cadence of experience enhancements and quality-of-life improvements, the roadmap also featured a series of new questlines that would be released through to the end of 2023, starting with the aforementioned âSeason of the Bleakâ, and continuing from the middle of November with âWay of the Bucketâ (more on that below).
October & November 2023 â Difficulty Balancing
During the early weeks post-launch, we worked diligently to refine the balance between challenge and enjoyability in Lords of the Fallen, based on the feedback you sent. As a result, before the end of November 2023, weâd released more than 25 updates with an excess of 100 enhancements that improved your experience of the game.
These included a reduction in enemy density throughout Mournstead, with the number of mobs decreasing by up to 30% in some of the most challenging areas; a rebalancing of ranged enemy accuracy so players werenât sniped by Adyrâs forces before they were even spotted; and improving enemy leashing so they wouldnât pursue you overenthusiastically from one area to another.
November 2023 â Way of the Bucket
The Way of the Bucket questline featured a new armour set formed from some of the many broken pails found across Mournstead, and paid tribute to the self-styled Bucketlord⌠one of the more unusual characters found in Pilgrimâs Perch. After defeating the sinners (those who had drifted from the Bucketlordsâ gospel) and collecting the âPride of the Bucketlordsâ items they drop, players could exchange them for armour crafted from the wooden scuttles.
The quest launched alongside a new selection of spells, broadening the arcane options available for Dark Crusaders to exploit.
December 2023 â Season of Revelry
As the blood wine spilled over in December, we released the two-part âSeason of Revelryâ. While the first update â âOfferings of Oriusâ â added six new spells (including the devastating Immolation), additional secret boss weapon abilities, and three new projectiles (Blood Vomit, Explosive Mines, and Frost Worms) the second part â âTrial of the Three Spiritsâ â unleashed three questlines that on completion would provide new, separate armours as tributes to the gods of Umbral, Rhogar, and Orius.
This concluding part of the Season of Revelry also saw the introduction of new grievous strikes, embellishing each family of weapons with two unique finishes: one for single-handed wielding and another for two-handed wielding. It also saw two extremely popular community requests rolled out: gamepad rebinding, and a Coffer storage box added to Skyrest Bridge, which allowed players to free up inventory space and deposit up to 2,000 items in it.
Oh, and we added a fourth, festive throwable⌠SNOWBALLS!
April 2024 â Master of Fate
One of our biggest post-launch content drops launched as part of our âMaster of Fate â v1.5â update in April this year: the Advanced Game Modifier System. Highly anticipated by the community since the release of the post-launch roadmap timeline, the system introduced the ability to fully customise each playthrough of Lords of the Fallen through six different modifiers and randomisers.
Some, like the pre-upgraded loot option â which meant weapons and shields looted from enemies come pre-upgraded according to player level â supported new players while others, including the ability to reduce the number of Vestiges, increase the mob density, or activate permadeath, challenged even Mournsteadâs mightiest!
It's been fascinating to see the community experiment with the combinations of modifiers and randomisers on offer; one particular favourite of ours â activating pre-upgraded loot, randomising loot and enemies, and turning on permadeath, effectively transforms Lords of the Fallen into an all-new roguelite experience⌠give it a go, if you dare!
With the release of Master of Fate, weâd concluded the epic post-launch content roadmap, delivered more than 30 updates, vastly improved stability and performance, and added an arsenal of new weapons sets, armours, projectiles, and spells that together elevated Lords of the Fallen from v1.0 in October, to v1.5 less than seven months later.
But there was more to comeâŚ
May 2024 â Clash of Champions
Boss battles offer some of the most memorable moments in Lords of the Fallen, whether thatâs against the grotesque and putrid Congregator of Flesh, the dragon-riding Lightreaper, or even the initial confrontation with Pieta, She of Blessed Renewal. In May, we surprise-launched the âClash of Championsâ update, accessible through Mournsteadâs many Vestiges, that would put these bosses front and centre once again.
Featuring two new modes â âEchoes of Battleâ and âCrucibleâ â Clash of Champions unlocked a way for Dark Crusaders to experience their favourite boss encounters again and again, or challenge themselves in deadly boss rush encounters across six increasingly challenging trials.
Unlocked by defeating the bosses listed in each of the separated crucibles in the main game, these trials go from facing three or four bosses, through to the ultimate challenge⌠The âCrucible of the Lordsâ, which features an incredible 12 bosses in consecutive combat.
Both modes are playable either solo or with a fellow Lampbearer in online co-op multiplayer, with additional rewards â including exclusive armour tincts â unlockable for those skilled enough to run the gauntlet of Crucibleâs trials.
We hope youâve enjoyed the past twelve months in Mournstead, and again, thank you for your feedback during the year. Weâll share more news on those upcoming, new enhancements very soon, but in the meantime, post your favourite moments in the comments below â or even leave a Steam review and let us know.
Did you drink your Pumpkin Spice Mead today? đ We hope that you're having a great time with our ongoing spooky event, and today, weâd like to share with you our newest game update. Letâs GO! đâ¨
