Capcom and Valve Team Up for Free Resident Evil 6 x Left 4 Dead 2 Crossover [UPDATE] Suddenly, the mother of all zombie apocalypses is about to happen. This just wound up in our inbox:

Capcom and Valve are pleased to announce the Resident Evil® 6 x Left 4 Dead 2 project. This crossover project between two of the interactive entertainment industry's most respected publishers will see characters from Left 4 Dead™ 2 featured exclusively in the forthcoming PC version of Resident Evil® 6, while enemies from Resident Evil 6 will invade the PC version of Left 4 Dead 2. All content will be made available completely free for fans of either game to access and play.

Owners of Resident Evil 6 PC will be able to select one of four survivors from Left 4 Dead 2's iconic cast – Coach, Nick, Ellis and Rochelle – when playing PC exclusive mode, The Mercenaries No Mercy. Each character will have a special customized weapon load-out created just for use in Resident Evil 6. In addition to the four survivors, two of the infamous Special Infected zombies from the Left 4 Dead franchise – the Witch and Mini Tank – will also make a cameo appearance in this mode, relentlessly attacking players regardless of whether a character from Left 4 Dead 2 or Resident Evil 6 is chosen. This new and exclusive content will automatically be downloaded in the background to all owners of the PC version of Resident Evil 6 from April 5.

Making the leap to the PC version of Left 4 Dead 2 will be some of Resident Evil 6's most fearsome enemies – Lepotitsa, Napad and Ogroman. All three characters were brought to life in Left 4 Dead 2 by Valve's renowned developers using its Steam Workshop tools. Owners of the PC version of Left 4 Dead 2 will be able to face a new deadly challenge when Resident Evil 6 characters infect Valve's classic zombie title this spring.

Commenting on the crossover project, Chet Faliszek from Valve stated: "We're huge Resident Evil fans, so when the opportunity arose to work directly with Capcom to combine L4D2 and RE6, we jumped at it."

Resident Evil 6 Producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi added: "The Resident Evil 6 team really enjoyed working on this crossover, and we're confident that our fans will have a great time with it too! We hope you enjoy this unique content."

More as we learn it.

Valve loves collaborating with third-party partners whenever they come a-knocking. Capcom has announced that the upcoming PC version of Resident Evil 6 will have cross-over features with Left 4 Dead 2. Best of all, the cross-over features will be free for players of either game to access and play.

New to the PC version of Resident Evil 6 is an exclusive mode: "The Mercenaries No Mercy." In this mode, players will be able to play as one of the four survivors of Left 4 Dead 2: Coach, Nick, Ellis, and Rochelle. Not only will players fight against Capcom's horde of undead, but the Witch and Mini Tank will make special "cameo appearances" where they try to kill you. This mode will be available for all PC owners of Resident Evil 6 on April 5th.

Conversely, the PC version of Left 4 Dead 2 will feature new enemies taken from the Resident Evil universe. The Lepotitsa, Napad, and Ogroman will appear in Valve's game "this spring."

Valve's Chet Faliszek said that "we're huge Resident Evil fans, so when the opportunity arose to work directly with Capcom to combine L4D2 and RE6, we jumped at it." Also, this promo is also much, much cooler than Team Fortress 2 hats, we'd argue.

Eddie Riggs from Brütal Legend has taken a break from fighting Doviculus and to help us in Left 4 Dead 2 land with our little zombie problem. He is sending over his battle-axe and guitar, so this weekend players can rock out and slay hordes of zombies.

Thanks to Double Fine, you can find Eddie’s weapons in the Brütal Legend’s Collection inside the L4D2 Workshop. Just visit the workshop, click subscribe, and next time you load up Left 4 Dead 2, you will have two new “axes”.

If you want to join Eddie along with Lemmy, Rob Halford, Ozzy Osbourne, Lita Ford and others fighting on the side of Heavy Metal – you can pick up Brütal Legend on Steam!

Let’s Rock!

What’s next for the L4D2 Workshop? We are working on some tutorials and new examples of how to create content for the Workshop.

For Rohan! Valve's Left 4 Dead team writes that Left 4 Dead 2 servers now run Team Chivalry and SeriouS Samurai's LOTR-inspired Survival mode map by default for players who subscribe to the map's Workshop entry. It's a celebratory move for a recent dedicated server fix and the ongoing beta for the Extended Mutation System, but c'mon—do you really need a reason to defend a massive stone fortress against waves of Saruman's mightiest undead?

I haven't run for my life in Left 4 Dead 2 in quite a while, but awaiting rescue from Gandalf while possibly yelling "AND MY CHAINSAW" into my microphone sounds like just the kind of fun to hook me back in.

With today’s update, we fixed an issue with dedicated servers and workshop content. This should resolve some of the consistency issues people are seeing while playing on a dedicated server.

Server operators will need to move workshop content from addons to addons/workshop for it to work correctly – sorry about that.

To celebrate, we are adding Helm’s Deep Reborn to our own official servers. Gone is the long explanation of how to download and install the campaign. Now – just visit its workshop page and click subscribe. Next time you open Left 4 Dead 2 it will begin to download. If the campaign gets updated – it updates automatically for you. It’s that easy.

Make sure to choose official servers when you play to join one of our servers. It is a survival only campaign, so it is not playable in other modes and you need to make sure it has finished downloading to play it.

We are also continuing to work on the Extended Mutation System in the L4D2 Beta with an ever widening group of modders pushing gameplay into new and old places. We just released a new example mutation that allows you to play L4D1 style inside of L4D2! We are working with the content creators and adding features before we release this new tool and its many creations onto the world – stay tuned.

Product Update - Valve
- Added support for dedicated servers to load addons from the "workshop" subdirectory. Fixes consistency errors when playing workshop campaigns on dedicated servers.

NOTE TO SERVER OPERATORS: To host workshop campaigns on your dedicated server, they should now be placed in the same location as on the client (/left4dead2/addons/workshop/…) Campaigns not downloaded from the workshop can still go in the "addons" directory.
