More bright, cheery games, please.

Kieron had big love for this year’s Toki Tori, a fiendish puzzle game by indie developers Two Tribes. They’ve got a new game that’s due out in two days, and just received a debut trailer: RUSH. It’s a puzzle game, but completely different from their previous game. This time it’s a 3D cube-rolling affair, which at first glance made me think of the iOS game Edge (the one that suffered from Tim Langdell’s impotent attacks.) But it quickly becomes apparent that it’s not the same at all. It’s about guiding multiple blocks to their targets, creating paths for the perpetually moving cubes. And from the trailer below, it looks pretty lovely.

Oddly, Toki Tori reminds me of Walker. I mean that affectionately. No, really.

First thing: keep reading. Second thing: We’ve written about Toki Tori before, in passing, but with a demo released, it’s now time for you to pay proper attention. Third thing: keep reading. Fourth Thing: despite its hyper-cute styling, this is a devilishly smart little puzzle game which recalls me of the intricate post-Lemmings stuff which appeared on the Amiga. You simply have a limited number of tools and have to collect all the eggs on the level. The level doesn’t want you to. Who will win? It’s just lovely pure game design. Fifth thing: It’s also dirt cheap. The game’s five dollars (aka Three-quid-fifty) from all your favourite digital download places (Steam! Impulse! Gamers Gate! And – er – Mac Game Store!). The Dutch game development studio and digital publisher Two Tribes proudly announces that the award winning Toki Tori is now available for Mac users through Steam.

Harderwijk, the Netherlands - May 12, 2010 - Two Tribes is pleased to report that Toki Tori will be available for purchase through Steam for Mac from day one. "Steam for Mac is an exciting new opportunity, since it gives us a single channel to reach millions of Mac gamers", says Martijn Reuvers, Managing Director at Two Tribes. "Existing customers will be able to play on their Macs as well, since Toki Tori supports the Steam Play functionality, which only requires a single license to play on both PC and Mac."

New customers, who will experience Toki Tori for the first time, will learn that the gameplay in Toki Tori is a blend of two genres. While it looks like a platform game, it's a puzzle game by heart. To progress through the game, players must pick up all the eggs in a level using a set number of tools. Players will have to look and plan ahead carefully while using items such as the Telewarp, Freeze-o-Matic and InstantRock. Additional tools are gradually introduced as the player progresses through the games 80+ levels covering four unique worlds.

Toki Tori Update Released

Updates to Toki Tori have been released. The updates will be applied automatically when your Steam client is restarted. The major changes include:

Added new community bonus level to the Bubble Barrage world

Added new launch option "--visualeffects <VALUE>", which accepts 1, 2 or 3 as value. This overrides the visual effects level that's saved

Fixed bug that made it possible to teleport into a ghosttrap

Fixed Dutch typos in localization

Fixed checking for egg collection achievements after having played in offline mode
