The general purpose GP38-2 road switcher joins the Norfolk Southern stable for Train Simulator.

As the successor to the previous GP38, more than 2,000 GP38-2 models were built by General Motors between 1972 and 1986. The majority of models were put into service on US railroads, although some were exported to Canada, Mexico and Saudi Arabia.

Their modest power output of 2,000 horsepower from a 16 cylinder engine saw them classified as road switchers, but were adequately able to haul light freight across the US railroad network. Many remain in service today, more than 40 years after entering service.

Most GP38-2 locomotives were built with a low hood, although some were built in high hood variant, as portrayed in the EMD GP38-2 for Train Simulator, which comes in Norfolk Southern black and thoroughbred liveries. Features of the model include flashing ditch lights, low gondola freight car, NS box car and flat car.

The locomotive is also Quick Drive compatible, giving you the freedom to drive the Norfolk Southern GP38-2 High Hood on any Quick Drive enabled route for Train Simulator, such as those available through Steam. Also included are scenarios specifically for the Norfolk Southern Coal District route (available separately and required to play these scenarios).

Around 4,000 models of the Dash 2 series locomotive were built between 1972 until 1989 as an upgrade to the SD40. This new version included an updated 3,000 horsepower, turbocharged 16 cylinder diesel-electric engine, with some external updates including longer front and rear ‘porches’ and an additional roof-mounted radiator grill.

The reliability and versatility of the Class saw many variants produced and nearly all remain in service, seeing service across the US, plus Canada, Mexico, Brazil and Guinea. The locomotive is capable of a 65mph top speed when fitted with standard gearing.

The beautifully rural Mon Line running through the heart of Pennsylvania springs to life in this new route for Train Simulator, complete with mile-long coal trains and distinctive street running.

The original Monongahela Railroad was a joint venture between the Pennsylvania Railroad (PRR) and the Pittsburgh and Lake Erie Railroad (P&LE). Through the early 1900s, the two companies acquired many lines in the area and by 1930, the Monongahela (‘Mon Line’) was operating more than 170 miles of track serving numerous coal mines.

At the heart of Pennsylvania’s coal country, the rural Mon Line is today owned by Norfolk Southern with CSX Transporation also having trackage rights. Coal mines dominate the route, with important facilities at Bailey Mine and Emerald Mine connecting with a staging yard at West Brownsville from where coal trains continue on their way to power stations or to ports for export.

More than 20 million tons of coal is annually transported along the line, much of it to Loveridge Secondary where it is transhipped from rail to river barges. The route is primarily made up of four branch lines – Manor, Ten Mile Run, West Brownsville and Loveridge, and includes the unusual spectacle of full size coal trains sharing the public highway with cars along Main Street in West Brownsville.

The route is relatively level, following the west bank of the Monongahela river, as far as Millsboro, then Ten Mile Creek to Waynesburg and Emerald Mine. The line then turns north east, closely following the twists and turns of Browns Creek. This final 15 miles to Bailey is completely rural in nature until it reaches the loop at Bailey, when the dominant coal industries take over.

Included with the 50 mile section of the Mon Line from Bailey Mine to West Brownsville for Train Simulator is a Norfolk Southern-liveried ES44AC diesel locomotive, part of GE’s Evolution Series. Its mammoth 4,400 horsepower and 75mph top speed make it an ideal locomotive to head the long coal trains seen on the Mon Line.

Bespoke Conrail signalling can also be found throughout the route, along with new ‘Top Gon’ coal gondolas with full and empty loads. Engineers can also create their own coal loads at Bailey Mine and Emerald Mine with working coal loading facilities.

The latest route for Train Simulator captures the rugged beauty of South Africa. This route will take you on a 3’6” Cape gauge line through twenty six stations or halts on the way. Experience a range of terrain, from lush green plantations, winding rivers, traversing gorges, numerous tunnels, mountain sides, deep valleys and open plains. Travel through the rolling green hills of Pietermaritzburg at a height of 672 m and end approximately 191 km further north at Ladysmith, 1037m above sea level.

The route starts at Masons Mill’s huge railway yard and depot just outside Pietermaritzburg in the KwaZulu Natal province of South Africa. From there it winds with double, electrified track to the first major station on the route, Pietermaritzburg. Travelling north from Pietermaritzburg, it forms two complete balloons (loops) at Boughton station, in order to negotiate the narrow valley at the foot of the first mountain range, then climbing to the first tunnels at Cedara, two single bores each 6km long.

After Cedara, the line continues to progress through more tunnels, river crossings and a few major stations, surrounded by plantations, factories and the occasional traditional village next to the line.

Between Merrivale and Tweedie is the huge wall of the Midmar dam, a spectacle to tourists, which can be seen from the line.

The product features Class 6E1 Series 4 3Kv DC electric locomotives, designed and built for the South African Railways (SAR) by Union Carriage and Wagon (UCW) in Nigel, Transvaal. One hundred locomotives were delivered in 1973 and 1974, numbered E1446 to E1545. The South African Class 6E1 was produced in eleven series over a period of nearly sixteen years, with 960 units produced altogether, all built by UCW. This makes the 6E1 the most numerous single locomotive class ever to have seen service in South Africa and serves as proof of a highly successful design.

The locomotive is presented in four livery variations, Blue, Red, Red with yellow stripes and Orange.

In addition, a selection of wagons is included along with a passenger car.
