I am a man, and if you look up there is a photograph of me. Now that we’ve got that out of the way, shall we discuss the matter at hand: Believe it or not, there are some cheap PC games available. As I usually do, I’ve sorted through the various offers to bring you a snapshot of the highlights. For all the latest discounts on all formats throughout the week, be sure to head over to SavyGamer.co.uk. (more…)

Jim and Adam have written words about Planet Explorers, a sort of MMO single and multiplayer voxel-based construction game that’s free to download right now. The reason I am returning to the game is the developer of this oddball mix of Spore, WoW, and Minecraft has just released a video showing their commitment to user-created content. It’s a sci-fi fantasy world with giant, stalking deathbeasts, shiny spaceships, and laser blasters, so naturally you’d expect to see Arrested Development’s Stair Car roaming the lands. (more…)

To the air aboveHot-air balloons are just like zombies. Slow-moving, bloated, gassy, and every summer the people of Bath gather and watch them take off. The many ways they’re not like zombies are evident in The Aurora Wager, a free indie game built for the 7DRL competition. It’s not very roguelike, because a lot of those elements fell out of the basket as the game was hastily put together, but it is fun. (more…)

Ye Olde Tyme StrategyBeing a freelancer, time has lost all meaning and constancy. So much so that I’m writing this post in 2035. Hello from the graphene dome of of San Wales. It’s another balmy 96 degrees centigrade on the new North Pole. The Bieber Gaga war is now over, and we can all sit back and enjoy Cyber Easter with a big old slurp of Solyent. Oh look, it’s Good Friday. Time to forget all your troubles and enjoy the holidays. Will you be gaming? Is it perfect timing for you to hop into BioShock Infinite, or is there something else that you’re going to spend time with? I finished BioShock Infinite all those years ago/last night, so I’ll be hopping between Trials Evolution Gold and a review game. But enough about my fabulous life. What about yours? (more…)

The purpose of Unreal 4′s increasingly elaborate vignette story trailers eludes me, since they are basically devoid of any game context, and might as well be rendered or something. However, I can’t deny that the latest – a leak spotted by the Big K – is an extraordinary sight. Go take a look, below. (more…)

I actually don’t think Dragon Age II was all that terrible. Or rather, I fully understand that elements of it were very, very bad (it had more caves than Ron Gilbert’s The Cave, for instance; and not on purpose), but others were incredibly fascinating. Party members lived their own lives, themes like racism and security-vs-freedom got the spotlight, and your choices really, really didn’t matter all that much. Was it a game whose budgetary and time constraints hung about its neck like a noose, leaving only gasping wisps of potential? Absolutely. But those limits also shaped it, so it was interesting to see a less powerful BioWare craft a narrative about, well, powerlessness. After discussing the baffling impracticality of sexism, Dragon Age lead writer David Gaider and I talked about the ups and downs of Dragon Age II and how they’ve ultimately guided Dragon Age III to a very different place. >

There is a lovely story behind thisHello, readers. I am alone in the RPS forbidden chatroom of mystery, which means that I am in charge of RPS until someone comes and takes it away from me. They actually forgot I was here and took Good Friday off without telling me! I am just> a freelancer. So today we’ll have none of the usual nonsense that passes for RPS posts these days. News? Schmews! Faetures? I can’t even spell the word. GDC? I just checked and it doesn’t mean “Gloriously Decadent Chips”, so I don’t know why John and Jim are there. My autonomy means I get to do stuff like this. ArmA 3′s creative director pointed me towards a lovely ArmA 2 mod. An inquisitive six year-old’s first ArmA 2 addon. In the middle of all the horribly detailed war bastards that are usually built for the game, the wee boy made a table. Being a huge sap, I asked for more screenshots and details. They are EXCLUSIVE and below. (more…)

The PC/PS3 dynamic for all to see. Run, you joypad warriors. Fear our function keys!

If you’re not a regular Eve Online player, and if you don’t own Sony’s LittleBigUncharted emulator, you might not be aware that the PC players of Eve Online can now drop orbital strikes into the free-to-player PS3 shooter, Dust 514. CCP have decided it’s time to trailerise such an event, so for 2m51s there will be some> footage of a console game on RPS. Don’t worry, though. I got your back. (more…)

British strategy captains The Creative Assembly have used their lead designer James Russell’s talk at GDC to reveal that they are creating a multiplayer game based on the Total War series. It’s called Total War: Arena [URL dead at the time of writing, but I am told it will appear there], and it will be free-to-play, based on the original Total War multiplayer, and feature 10 vs 10 battles.

I saw the announcement and will serve up some additional details for you just below.> (more…)
