Let’s play a game of good news, bad news.

Good news! DayZ‘s developers have laid out their development roadmap for 2015 and it includes long desired features, and should finally bring parity with and improvements over the original mod. These additions include basic vehicles and better zombie AI in early 2015, and eventually will stretch to construction and base building in late 2015. The game also has a projected final release date sometime in the first half of 2016.

Bad news! The game’s price is going to increase gradually over the remaining development period and to begin with has increased from $30 to $35 and then immediately been discounted by 15% back down to $30 as part of the current Steam sale. Depending on your point of view this is either a nice way to soften the blow of an understandable and inevitable price increase or, in the UK at least, a breach of consumer protection guidelines.

BOO!

I’m disappointed in Alec for not having a more wacky experience in Assassin’s Creed Unity. While folks across various platform found bugs from horrifying missing faces to people on invisible minibikes, he only had performance problems. Try harder to get funny bugs next time, Alec.

Ubisoft have apologised for launching the game in such a sorry state, and are trying to make amends by offering everyone its first planned big DLC pack, Dead Kings, for free. And as that was supposed to be part of the DLC Season Pass, they’re trying to make amends to Season Pass holders by offering them a free game from a selection including Far Cry 4 and The Crew.

I always believed that clothed skeletons make for easier to hit targets than them lewd naked ones.

I have to admit I only scratched the surface of Dungeon Heroes and cannot be absolutely sure of its size or how it wraps things up, but after several hours of surface scratching I’m certain this is a lovely and hefty CRPG genre purists will adore. It is a very traditional hack-and-slash dungeon crawler filled with hidden rooms, puzzles, monsters and everything a ’90s gamer would expect.

This seems like the sort of thing we need to be writing for every game of late. Where the narcissism of publishers sees them fail to allow the player to just skip past their opening vanity screens, and you frantically click and stab at every key, certain that they surely can’t be this vain? Fortunately, the superb fun of Far Cry 4 can easily be more quickly reached, without having to dig out the individual obscurely-named video files from the depths of your hard drive.

Alice digs a game about a rainy forest? You don't say! -The Phantom Alt-Texter

As the leaves start to fall, so too the balance of my humours slips. My blood sinks and, as I’m naturally dry of yellow bile, my body is swamped with phlegm and black bile. I’m drawn to ponds and rainy woodlands, phlegmatic and melancholic, sighing wistfully as I drift in cold water and tread carefully across wet litter.

Oh, it’s a lot more pleasant than it sounds. Look at Petrichor (the smell of rain on dry earth – a great word, that). The free point ‘n’ click platformer’s visit to a rainy forest is delightful.

In a world where it’s increasingly likely that game bundles will soon be given away with Happy Meals, people are often flabbered right down to the gasts when they see the prices over on planet Matrix. The wargaming/strategy publisher doesn’t discount its back catalogue as often as some companies discount their front catalogue, so when the annual holiday sale rolls around, it’s worth paying attention to. Lots of titles are discounted by 50%, including the excellent Unity of Command and its expansions. The Gary Grigsby titles are also on sale, as are many others, listed here.

This is me now, waltzing through Dota without a care

Part of a miscellany of serious thoughts, animal gifs, and anecdotage from the realm of MOBAs/hero brawlers/lane-pushers/ARTS/tactical wizard-em-ups. One day Pip might even tell you the story of how she bumped into Na Vi s Dendi at a dessert buffet cart.>

Towards the end of November most games journalists are preparing their retrospectives for the year that will have been. They’re also keeping a wary eye on the release schedule in case an excellent game derails those pencilled-in Game Of The Year ideas. I spent six months of this year working as an eSports reporter so most of the games I focused on had been around for years. Freshness would come from patches and updates, new characters, weird showmatch modes, twists in the metagame and team roster changes. It’s a huge amount to absorb so new releases took a back seat. I played Dota or CS:GO, learned about LoL and picked my way through the basics of World of Tanks.

As a result, 2014 for me was more about progress in existing games than seeking out the new. That’s why I ended up going back to a Tumblr I started when I was still pretty new to Dota 2. It was to get a sense of that progess of the distance between nubnub Pip and the Pip who now plays on a team in a games industry competition in which we’re actually doing okay!

Yes, but what does any of this have to do with exploring?

An ache in my left hip awoke me this wet morning. This dicky joint has been reliably crying “Hey! Get up! You’re missing a lovely noise!” for weeks now, but this morning’s throb felt different. It’s been going on long enough that I could sense something special in the air. It was as if we’d moved from rainy mornings into autumn – proper autumn – and do you know that means? My hip did.

The Steam autumn sale has begun with a flurry of bargains on games old and surprisingly new.

The contemporary big-budget FPS has a few different strains: blood-n-guts military settings a la Call of Duty, open-world environments like Far Cry, and high-concept dystopias. Outside of open-world most of these styles were first codified in the 1990s, and FPS games then and now share an enormous amount: primarily a core mechanic of shooting many hundreds of enemies in the face over and over again, as well as crossover in areas like structure, goal-chaining, and narrative delivery. FPS games, in other words, have for a long time been constructed on resilient and proven principles. And many of them come from Looking Glass Studios.
