Remember how excited you were when we got two whole Company of Heroes 2 screenshots> a couple days ago? Well, prepare to be roughly that excited again, because now we’ve got another two>. That’s still two more frames of actual gameplay than we got from spending time in the company of yesterday’s trailer, though, so my anger tank can only fire so many shells. Regular tanks, however, can fire so many> shells, as evidenced by the screenshots. And that makes me happy, only reducing the effectiveness of my wimpy rage cannons even more. Oh goodness, the whole party's dead, and it's two mushrooms versus... a Minotaur. I fail to see how they got into this situation in the first place.

Wow. I always thought Legend of Grimrock would be a natural fit for a map editor, but – given that it’s a smaller project in a fairly cutthroat genre – I worried that it’d turn out to be prohibitively complicated for everyone except rocket scientists and RPS readers. Almost Human’s released a video of the almost-complete Dungeon Editor in action, though, and it actually seems tantalizingly intuitive. I mean, it’s no Perpetual Testing Initiative, but you can script some fairly complex stuff in a few clicks and try it out with a single button press. Throughout history, the existence of a cow level has been debatable, but soon, I will craft the> snail level. Glistening bodies and chunky tendrils of mucus as far as the eye can see. Oh yes.

Bloody hell, that took ages and looks completely shit. Someone do a better job for me.

As I stare down the epic list of Kickstarted and Indiegogoed PC projects, my tired eyes cry out, “sleep John, it’s Saturday morning.” But then my fingers call back, “No eyes! That is weakness. And we can show no weakness in the face of trying to think of a word other than ‘goal’ or ‘target’ for every entry.” “But you just typed ‘goat’ instead of ‘goal’,” retort my eyes. But even this can’t stop me.

The real victim here? Whales.

Well, presumably. I mean, you’re supposed to be protecting them, but – if I didn’t know any better – I’d say the world was designed specifically> to slice, dice, burn, electrocute, and robo-punch these impractically helpless creatures in a variety of comedic ways. The very notion is, of course, madness, but sometimes – when I’m all alone on dark nights, rain attempting to drown the earth and flashes of lightning dramatically illuminating my face – I can’t help but wonder. I’m probably fretting about nothing, though. I’m sure Cute Things Dying Violently has perfectly benign intentions. And hey, now the Xbox Live Indie Games hit is coming to PC on July 17. There’s a trailer after the break, which depicts… well, I really shouldn’t have to explain this.

Oh Remedy, how we missed you during those few years when you just stopped and absolutely didn’t make any games on anything ever>. Perhaps you traveled to the furthest corners of the world in an attempt to find yourself. Maybe you struggled with a crippling addiction to some illicit substance and became embroiled in an inspirational struggle to reclaim your own life. Maybe I just accidentally reverse-engineered the plot to Max Payne 3. Regardless, we’ll probably never know exactly what you were up to, but – with Alan Wake, Alan Wake’s American Nightmare, and now a remake of top-down sunshine-and-rainbows racer Death Rally – it’s good to have you back. Details and one of the more bizarre announcement trailers I’ve ever seen after the break.

Well, this seems innocent enough.

I think we’ve all had a good think or two about what we’d do if we ever gained the power to time travel. Most of us, however, probably haven’t decided on “get sad and die.” (And if you have, gosh, at least go ride a T-Rex first or something.) Happy-sadly, Suspense II uses a gauntlet of fairly brainy puzzles in conjunction with said time travel powers – all the while subjecting you to heart-rending ruminations on the nature of mankind and mortality. See, at any given moment, you’re able to hop back-and-forth between a sunny rural area full of soaring mountains and their respective majesties and, er, the apocalypse. Some of the tiny, wordless environmental stories Suspense II tells with that conceit, though, are brilliant. It’ll only take you 20-30 minutes, so give it a quick play here. Then do some soul-searching, learn to play guitar like you always meant to, and – when you’re ready – come back and read my (somewhat spoilery) thoughts after the break.

Adventure games are so dead that occasionally one goes on sale before I’ve even noticed that it was in development. Hoodwink is available now, nestled on Origin’s electronic shelving units. Developed in Malaysia, it’s the first game from E-One Studio and is set in a dystopian city. Dystopian but wacky and light-hearted. A noirish shadow falls over the lead character’s misadventure, although it’s somewhat dappled by zany robots, cel-shaded graphics, anime influences and a hoodlum who suffers from a severe case of anthropomorphism. That’s all based on the trailer, which you can judge for yourself below.

House vs angry house action!Cornered Rat, the guys who made the wonderful-but-rickety MMO World War II Online, are currently storming another beach: the lightly defended shoreline of Kickstarter funding. They’re now making a tactical shooter-with-extra-bits called Rapid Assault. It’s going to be 64-player with infantry and armour on “huge” WWII battlefields, realistic damage models, and lots of other general ambitiousness.

Cornered Rat’s Al Corey claims: “We are long-time fans of games like Red Orchestra, ARMA and World of Tanks and we’re inspired to bring a new, combined arms tactical shooter to market with our own flavor.” Hmm. Let’s take a look at that pitch video, below. (more…)
