Cyborg Arena - Devdan

It is after almost 8 months of development that I am very glad to announce that Cyborg Arena has finally been launched as a full release !

It was after first being announced in Greenlight back in April, and Greenlit in June, that the game was released as an Early Access, in October. Since then, a lot of testing, improvements, bug fixes were done for the game to achieve this final build.

During the development of the game, more content and features were developed than what was actually announced in the early trailer. From a simple arena-based game with only few arena maps and weapons from Action Alien, Cyborg Arena has turned into a complete single player game, with a large adventure map explorable with a buggy and 4 arena maps with pickable boost bonus.

A lot of work was done for the cyborgs, especially in creating the different and distinctive animations used when they are walking, running and firing. A dynamic loadout system was also created, which gives to each cyborg a different set of headgears, armors, dresses and weapons randomly created at the beginning of each game.

Work was also done on the cyborg bosses to make them appear much more imposing than the rest of the cyborgs. They wear a heavier armor, have glowing eyes and will be harder to defeat. In the adventure map, they are a also key element of the mission, by dropping the batteries required to power up the long range antenna and send the SOS signal.

The buggy which is also a core element of the adventure map was added to give a more complete gameplay instead of simple combat sequences. It has allowed to create a larger adventure map with many paths and secret places to find. During some tests, having the buggy to pass a bump at high speed could make it fly around and land it on its roof. This is why a smart system was implemented which allows the player to bounce the buggy back to its wheels !

In an attempt to create a credible storyline and improve the narrative dimension of the game, voice acting was done for the radio communications between the commander and the soldiers, depicting their retreats after being overrun by the cyborgs.

Last but not least, to make sure the game was ready for the full release, a complete walkthrough of the adventure map was recorded which last about one hour. It does not show the arena maps but you may watch it to simply have a preview of the game, or if you already have the game but are stuck somewhere in the adventure map.
So with all these things done, the game should have a decent amount of content to leave Early Access. It will of course continue to be updated and improved in the future, but this time as an update for a full version !

Cyborg Arena - Devdan
One more arena map has been added to the game, named Scrapyard Night and which is taking place at night, inside a small scrapyard surrounded with walls of metal sheets.

The stacks of metal scrap provide an efficient cover against the cyborgs and the terrain itself has many high slopes giving a lot of spots to jump when cyborgs are firing.

Since the map is smaller than the others, the boost bonus are easier to find, which make possible to collect many of them in the same time and use multiple boost bonus simultaneously.

Each collected boost reset the delay of the last boost for 15 seconds, so as long as you find new ones you can keep the previous boost effects!

Improvements were also done to the game, changes list for this update :

  • Added Scrapyard Night arena map.
  • Fixed cyborgs on arena mode not spawning.
  • Fixed the batteries dropped by cyborg bosses sometimes disappearing.
  • Fixed the texture of the grenades crate.
  • Fixed achievement to unlock when clearing the adventure map from all cyborgs.
  • Fixed unlimited grenades boost not being removed when expired.
  • Made the cyborgs more bright and distinctive.
  • Improved Arena mode to be harder after a period of time.
  • Lessen the time needed to survive in arena mode to unlock the arena maps achievements.
  • Optimisations done for the cyborgs characters.
  • Optimisations for the game menu.
  • Starting a game with hard difficulty will now remove the HUD and cross-hair for a better immersion.

Hopefully the game is getting closer to leaving Early Access to reach the full release.

Cyborg Arena - Devdan
With the goal of adding more content to the game and increasing its value and playing lifetime, additional levels for the arena mode were planed and are now being added to the game.

For this update, a new arena map named Military Base has been added in addition of the 2 arena maps already available in the game.

This new map is consisting of the military camp which was already present in the adventure map.

As the other arena maps, you will need to resist for as long as possible against waves of cyborgs using the boost bonus randomly spawning on the map and which will give you extra power and abilities.

The camp is surrounded by heavy fortifications made with large blocks of sandbags and barbed wires.

With destructible tents inside and by using grenades, most of the camp can be destroyed. This will become handy to easily find the spawning boost bonus and to create a clear view to spot incoming cyborgs.

Along this new map, some minor improvements were added such as the ability to crush cyborgs with the buggy, along a couple of bugs fixes.

Cyborg Arena - Devdan
Cyborg Arena has just been released as an Early Access on Steam this last week-end, with the adventure map followed by 2 arena maps. The 2 other arena maps are still in development but should come soon.

The adventure map is complete and features a story line where the player will discover the plot by listening to conversations between soldiers and commanders through the radios placed on the map. Voice acting has been done with subtitles to enhance the atmosphere.

The game has also already received some updates since its release to improve it and fix some issues which appeared lately. Here is a list of the small tweaks and fixes which have been done :
  • Fixed the cyborg boss sometimes not spawning in the small scrapyard of the adventure map
  • Auto-shotgun is now more accurate
  • Fixed lags in the arena mode
  • Fixed the player collision mesh when crouching
  • Fixed cyborgs who could not hit the player
  • Added more cyborgs in the military base
  • Fixed firing impacts effects of the cyborgs.
  • Medkits will now extend boost time in arena mode
  • Re-adjusted cyborgs accuracy for easy and medium difficulty
  • Added a congratulation screen when completing the adventure map

More improvements and updates will of course come in the future. The next update should see the third arena map added to the game, which should be Scrapyard Night or Military Base.

I am very pleased to announce that Cyborg Arena is now available as an Early Access. The game will continue to be worked out and improved until the final release.

After the game has left Greenlight to be announced as a Coming Soon, the development has been progressing well and with a lot of internal testing, Cyborg Arena will be available as an Early Access for this next week !

With a good news, it will come with more features than what was planned. To sum it up, the game will contains one large adventure map with 4 instant battle maps featuring the arena mode !

The adventure map will have large explorable areas, with many items and weapons to find, a driveable buggy and a story line backed with voice acting and scripted sequences.

It will be also a good way to familiarize with the game before jumping into the arena mode, where the gameplay will switch from a survival shooter to a fast paced action game !

With collectible boost bonus to gain extra powers such as high speed, high jumps, unlimited ammo, explosive ammo, etc... achieve the best score against the cyborgs !

Following the game being Greenlit on May 2017, the development has been progressing well since then with many additional contents and features added to what was initially planned !

The game will now consist of a large adventure map where you will be able to drive a buggy to explore large areas and collect dispersed items and weapons, with parallel tasks of finding and eliminating the cyborgs and their commanders.

Along the adventure map, battles maps will also be available and will be featuring an arena mode with boost bonus spawning during the game which give high jumps, invulnerability, unlimited ammo, high speed, etc... to resist for as long as possible against waves of cyborgs.

There are now also some new powerful weapons such as automatic shotguns, laser rifles and assault rifles which will be boostable with explosive ammo crates dispersed on the maps !

Of course, achievements to unlock will also be available, along support of Steam cloud and customisable graphics settings, including support for 4k resolution and the ability to play with Xbox-like gamepads.

The destruction system from Action Alien has also been brought the game and will be present in the adventure map and especially in the Gas Station map.

Right now the game is set as Coming Soon, but it is planned to be released as an Early Access in not longer than a month !
