Old Man's Journey - mml
Hi there!
A lot of people have asked us for Trading Cards so Clemens sat down and created some beautiful collectibles including an emoticon of the old man. He even took the time and wrote back stories for some of the characters that you meet on the old man's journey. If you want to know what the favorite game of Huge the Vagabond is, you better collect them all!

The trading cards have actually been online for a few weeks now. But the heat of the summer made us forget to tell you about them. Sorry!

Have a great summer and be sure to do some walking along the seaside!

Best,
Felix

Old Man's Journey

Old Man’s Journey [official site] caught my attention before release entirely on the strength of its aesthetic. It reminded me of board game illustrations, of children’s books, of a particular Courbet painting, and of colour palettes remembered from trips to the sun-baked south of France. The game itself offered a touching tale told through environment and memory as an elderly man strapped on his rucksack and headed off.

The landscapes you encounter are both the setting for the game and the game itself because you play by raising and lowering the layers of scenery. Where the curves of two layers intersect the old man can hop between them, dodging obstacles and navigating around errant sheep. I sat down with Clemens Scott, the game’s art director, earlier this year to find out more about how he made the hillscapes work:

Old Man's Journey - mml
Hello everyone,
and thank you for your interest in our game. The positive reception of Old Man's Journey on Steam surprised us and makes us very happy! To give back we've been busy working on a major update for Mac and Windows.

The number 1 feedback we heard from you was that you would like to tweak Old Man's Journey to better fit your PC. So we finally added a real settings menu that you can access either from the pause or main menu.
We also added a way to quit the game from the main menu for those of you who don't like using cmd-q or alt-f4 to exit from a game :)

A few people told us that the game crashes on their Windows 7 machine. The reason for that was the plugin we used to play videos in our game. Luckily Unity just added their own VideoPlayer. So we updated Unity, made sure everything works as expected (something always breaks when updating to a major new version) and are glad to report that it now runs on our Windows 7 test case.

We also fixed a few bugs, improved some graphics and added a turtle. Can you find it?

All the best,
Felix

PS: Sorry that the fix took a bit longer than promised. That's beause we won an Apple Design Award and had to travel to the United States again to pick it up. We're so proud of our little game!

Hark! It’s the sound of our sweet voices taking up an hour of your precious time. The RPS podcast of old, the Electronic Wireless Show, has returned in a fresh new body. We’ve got news, interviews and silly features, as well as some of the traditional idle chat.

This week, Pip, Adam and I are chatting about Far Cry 5‘s “Last Supper” image, the recent layoffs at Hitman developer IO Interactive, and enjoying a jaunt through melancholy puzzler Old Man’s Journey. There’s also some Quickfire Questions with the developers of survival puzzler Rain World, news from Paradox Con and lots more. … [visit site to read more]

Old Man's Journey

Old Man’s Journey [official site] is a beautiful and thoughtful mild landscape puzzler which is at its best when it focuses on tiny details or on strange delights. The interaction can meander into dullness but there are moments of melancholy beauty to be found and which are arresting enough that it makes the whole thing worthwhile. Here’s Wot I Think: … [visit site to read more]

Even though I work with Alec and John and hear their tales daily, I still want to play Old Man’s Journey [official site]. Unlike the mundane travels of those creaking codgers, who are no longer my employers and so can no longer fire me, this old man’s journey is a wonderful journey of reflection through a beautiful landscape. It’s a gentle story-o-puzzler with a picturebook style, where we’ll need to pull on bits of the world to reshape it and solve puzzles so he can continue on his journey. Today a pleasant little trailer announces its release date: May 18th. … [visit site to read more]
