With GameSpy's online services set to shut down on May 31, 2K Games has stepped forward and announced which of its online-enabled multiplayer games will survive the closure. Borderlands, Civilization III, and Civilization IV, and their respective expansions will all begin making the transition from GameSpy servers to Steamworks in the coming days, while several other games will see their multiplayer servers go down with the GameSpy ship.

Word of a BioShock movie adaptation is starting to bubble up yet again. This time, the impetus is from Sony Pictures, which has registered three new domains related to the adaptation. This appears to be an effort to lock down the names, though, so once again we may not see anything come of it.

Chaos Reborn, the crowdfunded project from XCOM creator Julian Gollop, is now playable as a prototype. The reboot of the classic Spectrum game Chaos: The Battle of the Wizards will once again put wizards in a competition to the death.

X-COM is one of the most beloved games in all of PC strategy games. A new book by Shack's David L. Craddock promises to offer a behind-the-scenes look at the making of UFO Defense, Laser Squad, Chaos, and other strategy games by designer Julian Gollop.

The X-COM Files: How Alien Invaders, Rebel Squads, and Gooey Blobs Took Strategy Gaming by Storm will be available on Kindle in October, with "other platforms" coming afterwards.

XCOM: UFO Defense creator Julian Gollop has launched a crowd-funding campaign for his next game. Chaos Reborn is a reboot of one of his 1985 ZX Spectrum game Chaos: The Battle of the Wizards. You'll customize your own wizard and go head-to-head against five others.

2K Games is working on a pair of acclaimed Firaxis compilations, one of which is making a sudden arrival tomorrow. A 'Complete Edition' of Civilization V, which will include the base game and all of its add-ons, will hit PC on February 5, while the Complete Edition of XCOM: Enemy Unknown (which includes the XCOM: Enemy Within expansion) will drop on March 4.

2K Games has a lot of love for Sid Meier and they're proving it through a new collaboration with Humble Bundle. The latest Humble Bundle will collect some of Meier's best games, including the recently-released Sid Meier's Ace Patrol. But if you're feeling particularly charitable, you can also come away with Sid Meier's Civilization V and both the Gods and Kings and Brave New World expansions.

2K and Firaxis have decided that they like their civilizations like they like their eggs: scrambled. Civilization 5 is getting two new map packs with that theme for $4.99 apiece. The Scrambled Continents pack is available now, and the Scrambled Nations pack will come on November 5.

We've seen the promo shots of the Steam controller and heard generally positive reactions from indie developers, but we haven't yet seen it in action. That changed today, with a demonstration video that shows the prototype being used to control games ranging from the generally console-friendly shooters to more PC-centric titles.

Almost three years after launch, Civilization V's promised Pitboss multiplayer mode is finally arriving today in a new patch. The update also brings an observer mode, support for custom maps in multiplayer, AI tweaks, new terrain art, bug fixes, and more, making everything spick-and-span for the launch of the Brave New World expansion next week.

Pitboss is, in the words of the patch notes, a mode "which allows players to connect, take their turn, disconnect, and come back later. Email notifications and steam notifications are built into the system." A more laid-back mode for people who don't want to sit and play a round for several hours straight, see.

At first Pitboss will require someone to act as server, but developer Firaxis plans to release a standalone server that doesn't require a Steam account, "once the system has received a healthy amount of feedback from the community"--ie it's ironed out bugs and niggles.

The patch brings loads of other fine changes, especially to multiplayer, so do check the notes. It's due out later today, and should update automatically through Steam.
