If you loved The Path...
Bientôt l’été is available for Mac and PC.

You can get it here:

It's been 3 years since our previous release. So we're pretty excited about this one. Especially because it takes yet another step further away from conventional game ideas and towards embracing the medium of videogames as a mature and capable platform for artistic expression. We feel we have made a lot of progress with this one.

Bientôt l'été was inspired by French novelist and filmmaker Marguerite Duras. It's about love and loss, deception and desire, coyness and cruelty. You play a man or a woman, you walk along the beach, pensive. And then you go inside, to meet another player for a strange game of chess.

The music was composed by Walter Hus and the animations were made by Laura Raines Smith, who has animated all of our characters so far. The text is spoken in French and subtitled in many languages which you can choose from. Currently: English, Dutch, German, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Swedish, Polish and Russian. And we hope to add more.

Please spread the word if you like Bientôt l'été.

Warm wishes,

Michael & Auriea.

I dunno about that Citizen Kane of videogames nonsense, but one thing we definitely have is the Archduke Franz Ferdinand of videogames. Bring up the name Tale of Tales, most renowned/notorious for The Path, and you will be sure to spark a war. A war between those who believe games can be anything and those who believe games have to stick to a strict definition of games. It’s a very boring war and I don’t understand why people object to the existence of things they do not themselves enjoy, but THE INTERNET. Personally, I’m not quite sure ToT’s games have always lived up their promise or the concepts they explore, but this does not preclude me from being grateful for their existence, and for their continued dedication to experimentation.

So, their new game software product Bientôt l’été. It’ll be out later this month, all being well, and appears to be an even more overt departure from traditional game objectives and systems than before. (more…)

I kept on meaning to Sunday Paper this, but seeing the amount of actual content in, I think it deserves a post. A year on from the controversial talking point of 2009, Tale of Tales do a really elaborate postmortem of their work. As well as the traditional look at the work itself, there’s individual essays about each of the girls and their respective wolves. Lots of stuff to look at, in short, all showing the passion which Tale of Tales brought to the work. Central linking page is here. They’ve since closed the blog, and plan to close-to-disappear for the next eighteen months to work on two new projects. Good luck to ‘em.

Instead of extracting part of The Path and releasing it as a free trial, this is a brand new chapter, similar to parts of the game, but not the same. It gives you a free taste of the atmosphere of The Path.

In The Path - Prologue, you control the mysterious Girl in White. There’s a not a lot of gameplay in this demo. It’s just about exploring the forest and pondering the sights. A prologue should show what happened before the events in the story. But in this case, it may seem like it’s showing things that happened after. A mystery that will make more sense after playing the full game.

Play it now, on Steam.
