One of the most frequently heard complaints about Microsoft's Windows 10 is the forced download and installation of driver updates through Windows Update. In previous versions of Windows you were presented with a list of (driver) updates and could uncheck an update if you wanted to. While this change might seem useful for users that never update their drivers, there are several reasons why you do not want Microsoft to control the drivers that are installed on your computer, such as:
  • You want to use an older driver because it works better.
  • You have software installed that relies on another driver.
  • You encountered system problems caused by the driver from Windows Update.
  • You have a newer driver than the driver provided through Windows Update.
Because all driver updates are enforced by Microsoft, you cannot roll back to a previous version as Windows Update will download and install the driver again.

With Driver Fusion you can disable automatic and mandatory driver updates in Windows 10. This feature also works in Windows Vista, 7, 8 and 8.1. Once you have opened Driver Fusion, go to the settings  and select the advanced settings . You can then change how Windows driver updates are installed by changing the setting in to Never install driver software from Windows Update . After you have changed this setting you will have to restart your computer for the changes to take effect.

Changing how Windows driver updates are installed.

Unfortunately, some driver updates that are already discovered by Windows Update might still be installed after this change. This does not happen on every computer and you only need to continue with this guide in case a driver is still being installed without your consent. In order to prevent such drivers from being installed you can download the Show or hide updates troubleshooter package from Microsoft.

Using the show or hide updates troubleshooter from Microsoft.

Once you have opened the troubleshooter, select Advanced , make sure Apply repairs automatically is checked and select Next. The next screen will ask you if you want to Hide updates or Show hidden updates. You should select the Hide updates , unless you want to undo an update that you have hidden. The troubleshooter will now scan your computer for available updates and show you a list of updates that can be hidden . Make sure that you only select driver updates and ignore all regular Windows updates. Even though the troubleshooter can hide these updates as well, we do not recommend this as regular updates often contain software and security fixes. Once you have selected the driver updates that you want to hide, click on Next and then Close. Even though it is not necessary for most computers, we recommend you to restart your computer. Future updates that are added to Windows Update should be hidden automatically by the change made in Driver Fusion.

Since last year we've been working a lot on improving the interface of Driver Fusion. As a result are many parts of the interface improved based on the suggestions from the community.

The part we receive the most feedback on is the menu. Because we receive both positive and negative feedback on the menu, we would like to hear your opinion on it.

We've been working on a couple of variations on the menu and will show you some below.

On all screenshots, the icons are placeholders and do not represent the final idea. The blue color might also be changed (feedback is welcome).

On #3 and up you can also find a question button shown on the top of the screen. This button links towards the manual of that specific screen. This is planned for the upcoming version.

#1

The current menu, the hints shown.

#2

A menu on the left side, the hints shown.

#3

A menu on the left side, no hints. The most important hint is now shown as a tooltip when you hover over the menu.

#4

A menu on the left side, no hints and a question icon where you can hover over (or click on) to describe the feature. This question icon is only shown when you hover over health check. Here, you can also find a settings icon on the bottom left instead of the top.

With this type of menu there is no longer a separation between the screens we use at the moment (maintenance, computer, management). We also made some variations with separation integrated:

#5

Implied separation, but not naming them.

#6

Separation with names.

#7

Separated by category, you first click on a category and then it expands to the different screens.

#8
Your idea for another type of menu (or another variation on the screenshots above).

To just name a few questions we have:
  • Should we change something in the menu? If so, what should it be changed into?
  • Do you find the hints at the top of each screen useful and would you prefer to keep these hints as-is? Or would a tooltip be enough to describe the feature (with or without the large question button on top of the window)?
  • Is the separation of the screens (maintenance, computer, management) useful to you?
  • Another idea we've had was that the question icon on top of the window had two options, one would be to go to the manual (as described above) and the other one would be to show the tooltips in a dialog. Is this something you see as an improvement?

You can leave your feedback on this announcement, in the discussion forums or contact us through email. Please tell us about your opinion as your feedback is very important for us and the future of Driver Fusion.
