title="Permanent Link to 4K Screenshot Showcase: Trine 2">Trine4K

Every week, keen screen-grabber Ben Griffin brings you a sumptuous 4K resolution gallery to celebrate PC gaming's prettiest places.

A 2011 release, Trine 2 is remembered as one of the most lavishly produced platformers ever. Each area is awash with vivid greens and yellows and purples, as if the developer Frozenbyte's primary aim was to hit every single angle on the colour wheel. Whether it's a sun-drenched tropical paradise, fog-enshrouded churchyard, or greasy-walled dungeon illuminated by glowing slime and torchlight, it's essentially end to end graphics all the way. It makes for a richly saturated sugar rush of a game, sometimes sickly but no less sweet.

Oooh! Aaah!

Each generation adds its own twist to old fairytales, reflecting the tone and fashions of the era, teasing out undertones as statements. Trine was not an adaptation of an old tale, but played with genre conventions to deliver a modern message: lusty wizards and thieves with grappling hooks are totally wicked cool. But what comes out when that itself is updated? Prettiness. So much prettiness.

Developers Frozenbyte yesterday launched Trine Enchanted Edition, a remake of sorts in the Trine 2 engine, adding online co-op and buckets of shininess. It’d been in public testing for a month.

Trine 2 was superior to its predecessor in every way, so much so that if you played the sequel first you might be disappointed with the original. To combat this, Frozenbyte has released an Enchanted Edition of Trine, which is basically a remake of the game in Trine 2's engine. Most importantly, it introduces cooperative multiplayer to the original, which means if you've played it before, you may very well want to play it again.

The Enchanted Edition has been in beta for a little while now, but it's now available in its final form with a huge 80 per cent discount on Steam. If you happen to own the original Trine then you're entitled to a free copy of the new one, which can be launched within the game's launcher. The original will remain intact.

Check out the Trine Enchanted Edition launch trailer:

We launched a beta of the Enchanted Edition on Steam in June, and now we are happy to report the time has come for the official launch.

Check out the launch trailer below and prepare to be enchanted. :)

You can read more about the Enchanted Edition from our blog and from the Trine Enchanted Edition page at our website. The short version below:

The Enchanted Edition is a free update for Trine with added features, such as the online multiplayer. The updated version does not impact the original game. Instead, both versions are available and can be selected from the game launcher. At the moment the Enchanted Edition is only available in Steam for Windows, but we will be adding the Mac and Linux versions afterwards.

We also want to give big thanks to the Steam community! We have received lots of support and help with the beta. Working on the Enchanted Edition for you wonderful people has been great.

But enough, talk, right? We'll shut up (in a bit) and leave you a screenshot featuring the three heroes below. You can see more enchanting screenshots from our blog post. Have fun playing! :)

Have you already participated in the Trine Enchanted Edition BETA? If not, now is your chance! The Enchanted Edition is a free update for all who own Trine on Steam. If you want to participate, you can read more from the official Beta thread pinned at the Steam Trine Community Discussions.

Note that this is still a work in progress, so you can expect to run into some bugs and issues. You can add your contribution by posting bug reports to the official BETA thread on the Steam Community. We ask that all bug reports be posted in the official thread instead of here to make sure we notice them.

WHAT IS TRINE ENCHANTED EDITION?

In short, Trine Enchanted Edition is a port of Trine to the Trine 2 engine, and as a result, many of the “missing” features of the original game, such as online multiplayer, have been added! We have also updated the visual appearance of the game and improved the gameplay – the game should look and feel even better now. At the moment this patch is only for Windows. We will add Mac and Linux versions afterwards, but we can't give an estimate of the time frame for those yet.

HOW TO LAUNCH THE ENCHANTED EDITION?

1. Open your Steam Library
2. Right-click Trine and choose Properties
3. Navigate to the BETAS tab
4. Enter the following password to the access code field: TrineEEBeta2014
If the code does not work, try to restart your Steam client.
5. Make sure you have the beta chosen from the upper “Select the beta you would like to opt into:” menu and then close the window.
6. Make sure the Enchanted Edition is chosen from a drop down menu in the game’s launcher when you start Trine.

Please find the official Beta thread pinned at the Steam Trine Community Discussions for instructions on how to report issues. We are also updating all the known issues into that thread, to try and keep everything in one place. General feedback is always welcome of course.

Thank you all for your continued support and feedback, we hope you enjoy this update!

The prettier Knight, Wizaaaaard, and Thief.

I remember Trine as being awfully pretty but no, apparently it wasn’t pretty enough for developers Frozenbyte (and, having now returned to the game, it seems my memory’s not quite what it was). They’re porting Trine over to the Trine 2 engine, giving the puzzle-platformer a fairytale makeover and its sequel’s online co-op.

While Frozenbyte may disappearing off on their summer hols soon and don’t know quite when it’ll be finished, they’ve released a beta version so we can all argue with Skypepals over who gets to be the Wizard. (Tip: start this argument then sigh “Fine, I’ll be the Thief” because actually she is the best. Thank the pro-wizard lobbying of Idle Thumbs, I guess.)

title="Permanent Link to The best Steam Summer Sale deals: Day 1">Steam summer sale day one

Some claim that summer doesn t start until the 21st, but Valve says it s time for the Steam Summer Sale and we haven t heard anything from the solstice lobby so, happy first day of summer! As always, it s celebrated with a ridiculous store-wide Steam sale renowned for its low prices and intoxicating effect on the PC gaming community. Everything looks great when it s 80% off, but before you start filling up your library, here are our favorite picks of day one.

Reminder: if a game isn't a daily deal or a flash sale, it could pop up later in the sale for an even lower price. If you want to be safe, wait until June 30 to pick up a sale-long deal.

5 - Trine Complete

85% off: $3.74 / 2.69 - Steam store page

What Trine lacks in challenge it's not very difficult as platformers go it more than makes up for in magical fairy tale charm. The sequel, Trine 2, improves upon the formula just about every way, particularly through the addition of cooperative multiplayer action. And with the original game about to undergo a dramatic (and free!) overhaul thanks to the coming Trine Enchanted Edition, this bundle at this price is a must-have by any measure.

4 - Hotline Miami

85% off: $1.49 / 1.04 Steam store page | Flash sale: Buy it before 8 p.m. EST

No game revels in ultraviolence like Hotline Miami, which turns pixelated murder sprees into an art form. It's brutal, stylish, and challenging in that perfect way: once you make a perfect run through a level without stopping, mowing down a dozen thugs with a knife and then a pipe and then a shotgun, you'll feel like the god of sleazy Miami murders. You'll want some practice now, since Hotline Miami 2 includes a level editor that will let you craft your own murder rooms. Get it fast the flash sale on Hotline Miami won't last long.

3 - Far Cry 3

75% off: $7.49 / 3.74 - Steam store page

Attacking outposts is our favorite part of Far Cry 3. The sandbox shooter s story is a strange and meandering mixture of Alice in Wonderland and the spring break trip you made in college, but dismantling the dozens of bases that populate Far Cry 3 s islands however you want is scrappy, open-ended FPS combat at its best. Now s a good time to jump in before Far Cry 4releases later this year.

2 - The Witcher 2

80% off: $3.99 / 2.99 - Steam store page

You ve got until early 2015 before The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt releases, and it s looking fantastic. That s plenty of time to catch up on one of our favorite modern RPG series not only is The Witcher 2 on sale, the first game is only $1.99 / 1.39. Bonus value: The Witcher 2's fantastic story splits into two completely separate arcs in its second act, so if you want to experience both paths, you've got two playthroughs ahead of you.

1 - XCOM: Complete

67% off: $16.49 / 8.24 - Steam store page

Our favorite strategy game of 2012, conveniently collected into bundle form with the equally-great Enemy Within expansion, has one of the best campaigns in gaming. Hand-building your alien defense force replicates the feeling of running imaginary missions with action figures in your living room. Except this time, G.I. Joe can die for reals. Thoughtful strategy, a tense metagame, and detailed maps that explode into pieces make XCOM the second-best digital board game available (Civilization V would be the first).

Other great deals today:

Rising Storm: Game of the Year Edition (50% off) $9.99 / 7.49

Tomb Raider (50% off) $9.99 / 7.49

Max Payne 3 (70% off) $5.99 / 4.49
