Rock, Paper, Shotgun - (Alec Meer)

Excuse the rapidly-written post, but I only just noticed this and, at the time of writing, there are only thirty Earth minutes until the offer expires. 1997 platformer, and first game in the ongoing Oddworld series, Abe’s Oddysee is currently free on Steam. But not just in a free weekend sort of way – add it before 6pm UK time / 10am Pacific today and you get to keep it forever. … [visit site to read more]

Continuing its habit of giving away games for no apparent reason and with no strings attached, Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee is free on Steam today. Not for a limited time, not when you buy something else... it's just free.

You'll need to hurry though, because the offer ends Sept. 24 at 10 a.m. PT (that's early tomorrow morning in Australia), but once you install it, it's yours forever. Oddworld New 'N Tasty has a 50 percent discount as well, so if you like ugly-but-endearing green aliens then you ought to be happy.

Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee originally launched in 1997. New 'N Tasty is a remake of the original, with fancy new 3D graphics. It follows Amnesia: The Dark Descent as last week's freebie (presumably to promote Soma), so keep an eye out: there may be another free game next week.

New n Tasty

Hello. Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee is getting a major upgrade in the form of New 'n' Tasty, an enhanced re-release of the weird and wonderful 2D platformer. Described as a "ground-up remake", New 'n' Tasty promises enhanced visuals, "refined gameplay", and overhauled sound design. All that, and yet they still haven't learnt the correct spelling of odyssey. A new trailer has been released for GDC, giving you a taste of the game's new look. Follow me.

Oddworld: New 'N' Tasty is due out "soon" for pretty much every platform, including Windows, Mac and Linux.

Abe's Oddysee New 'n Tasty

Just Add Water have been showing their shiny remake of Abe's Oddysee at the Eurogamer expo. The revamp moves the quirky puzzler into full 3D. It'll retain the side-on perspective of course, but with a lot more graphical fanciness. The camera will follow the action seamlessly and tilt as you run to show a little of what lies ahead.

Oddworld founder Lorne Lanning said that the updated tech allowed Just Add Water to take a "retro neo approach" to remaking Abe's Oddysee, which means it's traditional and faithful to the original but also new and - okay I don't know what that means, but Lanning does mention that the cutscenes now all happen seamlessly in-engine. The puzzles are almost identical, apart from a few tweaks to accommodate seamless scrolling, and there will be a quick save function. Catch some footage of New 'n Tasty in action in this video from the EG Expo demo.

Abe's Oddysee: New 'n Tasty is due out Autumn next year. The presentation starts at the 15 minute mark and the in-game footage starts at the 41 minute mark.

Just Add Water has confirmed its HD reboot of the classic charming puzzle-platformer Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee will get a downloadable release on PC, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Vita. Now named Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee - New 'n' Tasty, it's coming in the fourth quarter of 2013.

The PC edition is due a bit after the console versions. Using the original as a loose blueprint, the "reimagining" is in shiny '2.5D' with new sounds and redesigned levels and all that jazz.

Just Add Water already revamped Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath, which hit PlayStation 3 in 2011 then PC last month, and is also re-doing Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee for Xbox 360 and PS3.

Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee is getting its own HD version, but fans will have to wait a little longer to play it. Developer Oddworld Inhabitants has announced that the game will get a full reboot rather than just some HD visuals, and as a result won't be out until next summer.

The developer announced the plans on its Facebook page (via GameInformer). It stresses that this will be a new game, to be shown off later this year. It later clarified that while this project is starting "from scratch," it's using the original game as a blueprint.

If you simply can't wait for more Oddworld, plenty more is on the way. Both the Vita version of Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath and the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee HD are targeting June releases.

Shacknews - Andrew Yoon

With the HD remake of Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath out of the way, developer Just Add Water can put the finishing touches on its next Oddworld game: Munch's Oddysee HD. Yes, it's another HD remake for PS3 and Vita--but you can expect it in the not-too-distant future. The developer recently tweeted that we can expect it in Q2, or just a few months from now.

PC gamers who have been playing the Oddbox can expect the HD updates later this year as well. "Both [games] will come to PC," the developer reconfirmed.

In spite of being an Xbox launch exclusive, Microsoft apparently is not interested in having either of JAW's HD remakes on the Xbox 360. "Nothing is exclusive from Oddworld," the developer tweeted. "However MS do not want either game currently." The developer previously pointed to Xbox Live Arcade size limits as one of the restrictions preventing the game from receiving Microsoft's approval.

Once JAW is done wrapping up Munch's HD revival, it appears their next job is a return to the classic 2D gameplay of the original Oddworld games. Abe HD is "an Abe reboot in 2.5D," the developer tweeted. However, given the recent call for developers, it's likely that project is still far off.

Sorry, but can't bring myself to write BIG in capitals every time.

“What did you do during the great bundle wars of Winter 2011, daddy?”“I posted about them, sweetheart. I posted about them all. I… I’ve seen so much. I’ll always carry that with me.”

We already know about pay-what-you-want charity bundle LittleBigBunch, but until 2pm today we weren’t able to so much as look at its website. Now we can, for it lives and is live. It’s a grand old package of PC games – Frozen Synapse, Explodemon, Serious Sam Double D, Oddworld: Munch’s Oddysee and New Star Soccer 5. A pleasantly varied package, I’d say. (more…)
