Proposed UI Changes in FS2 and thanks!

Many thanks for the recent feedback on the UI - has been really helpful and is much appreciated.

Thought I would update you about some changes we're thinking of making based on your feedback and our own appraisal of the situation.

None of this is final; all of it may not happen! That's the end of the caveats. Here's what we're planning on doing:

- A fundamental mechanics change to aiming and shooting which will be announced soon! This adds a new level of depth to the game and is very fun to play with. It may not feature in every mode but early tests are encouraging - Ian will be explaining this system soon when some issues have been worked out.

- Time handles replaced with wait orders. Wait orders are issued using the dragging functionality from time handles, but you do not place orders directly on the handles; you simply create a wait, then place your order in the stack after it. Time handles have always sucked to interact with directly, but dragging left to right is still the best way of defining an amount of time quickly; this should alleviate the former while retaining the latter.

- Units will have a "selection handle", which is a larger clickable element attached to the unit by a line. Selection handles will avoid overlapping with other UI elements meaning that you won't have the problem of trying to distinguish between two overlapping units.

- Probably something to make "check" less terrible to use

- Hopefully some better scaling of the aim handle so it's less tiny when zoomed out

- Probably some other things I haven't figured out yet

Frozen Synapse UI Discussion

Hi,

We're looking at trying to make some improvements to the Frozen Synapse UI in FS2.

This is a difficult topic: Frozen Synapse is a very complex game; some elements of UI design are subjective; making changes to our UI is difficult and time consuming.

So, please don't take it as a negative if we don't manage to incorporate your feedback.

I'd like to know what you find difficult to do in the game, both in-game and in the menus, what you find fiddly especially. Feel free to post anything you want, but in general flagging up problems is a lot more useful to us than suggesting solutions.

Thanks for taking the time to do this.

If you wanted to me AMAZINGLY helpful, a video demonstrating your problems would be great but any notes or comments are more than welcome.

In the film "Groundhog Day" some guy (Bill Murray) is suddenly blessed & cursed with repeating the same 1-day time period over and over again, indefinitely. In the crushing desolation of this acute & inescapable repetition, he’s forced to confront the erstwhile emptiness of his life and worse neither reckless abandon nor self-destruction seem to succor his temporal malady. However, the dissolution of normal human failure states as a direct result of his strange curse unexpectedly creates the metaphysical space in which he has the power to exorcise his personal demons and commit fully to growing into his full spiritual potential. Embarking on a quest to enrich the existence of other human beings ultimately gives his own existence the meaning it had lacked, and thus he finally indirectly achieves the salvation & the girl he's been after.

This is sorta like the videogame version of that. With clone soldiers and cyberpunk drivel. And more shooting. And less Bill Murray.

Methodical, simple-to-learn but complex-to-master game-mechanics, oh - and you can simulate all possible outcomes before committing your plan to '5-seconds of real-time'. The AI kicks butt, a human probably kicks more though.

Buy it, play it - it's worth a try, even if you don't end up liking it.

This is without doubt my favourite game of all time. Totally original concept at the time of its release (as far as I know). I can't see anything ever surpassing it apart from possibly the upcoming FS2. I've played it for years offline so please ignore my steam hours.

It's like a cross between chess and poker. There is no luck involved whatsoever and it's all about predicting your opponent's moves. The game is easy for a beginner to pick up but it takes time to become a master. The best thing I like about it is because it's turn-based you can take as long as you like over your moves so a) you have no excuse if it goes wrong, anb b) you get a good dose of satisfaction/adrenalin when it goes right. Many a fist-pump has ensued!

What I liked:

  • You and enemy playout at the same time
What You Need to Know:
  • The games story isn't a big selling point, so don't expect much and just skip it
  • You can plan your moves and the enemies moves that might happen and try your best to guess it and counter it or negate it as much as possible
  • There is no progression like in other games of similar style like DoorKickers( which is better in my opinion)
  • Between each move which is 5 secs of game time, it loads it, which can take longer than the moves to happen :O
  • This is really odd, but not ruining the game experience completely
  • What does it that fact that planing your guys moves and guessing the moves of your enemy takes so much time and the controls are not very quick to make plans,
    waypoints will screw you up unless you manually place them yourself, changing between crouching, aiming, and stoping anywhere in the middle of a guys movement can get hard to keep track of
    what they are doing later, when you have lots of moves to do and want very precise control of your guys
  • Looking forward to the sequel though, as it looks to be fixing all the problems, if not there is the sequel to Doorkicker( Seriously it's that good, I'm not being a hater of this game)

Úchylně zatěžkávající taktická "věc", kde v roli operatéra zasáhového týmu plánujete celý následující průběh akce. Bohužel v grafice podobné programu Autocad2000. Jen pro náročné.

It's like playing chess with a SWAT team, combined with an RTS and a psychology game.
Easy to get into, hard to master, GREAT soundtrack.

A really original simultaneous turn-based tactics, set in a cyberworld of a distant future.
Even if usually I'm not too much into this kind of games, I really enjoyed it for its simple yet complex mechanics. The rules are really basic, but since the whole game is about predicting opponent's moves, and you can never, never know for sure what another human being is thinking, and that's why it shines in multiplayer more than anything else, even though it has a lenghty and worthy campaign.
Multiplayer is really versatile too, since you can just leave your turn and play another match (or even another game altogether) while you wait your opponent's; you can even set the game to send you an email when a new turn is awaiting you.
Also, is worth nothing that replay of your matches are automatically saved on the servers, and you can watch even other's really easily; and there's an amazing little option that uploads your matches to your YouTube channel.
Graphics are really simple, but they do their job, and the soundtrack is astonishing good.

Just try the demo and complete the tutorial, you'll get an idea if this is or not a game for you, you could be surprised.

It's a shame when people have only AAA games in their mind and ignore hidden gems such as Frozen Synapse. The game is not for anyone - that can be said about any game out there. But in this case what I mean is that unlike other games where you just rush and kill everything in sight, in Frozen Synapse you must take a slower and more tactical approach. You are in command of a squad of soldiers, each equipped with different weapons, from shotguns through sniper rifles all the way to rocket launchers. The game has a good tutorial which can make a person understand the basic and more advanced tactics - from the standard take cover tactics to the more advanced search and destroy where each member of the squad covers the blind spot of the other and thus advance in their search for the enemies. Afterwards people can chose whether they want to advance to the campaign, practice against the computer in skirmish matches or go online against other people around the world. This is a game which would be more suited to the gamers which favor brains and strategy over the standard gamers which know only how to react and rely on reflexes while gaming ... If you are of the first type - I recommend buying this, if you are from the latter one - prove us wrong, joins us and show us ! :)
