"Murudai released games on NG, Rig released music on NG. They teamed up and made Solar 2!"

About This Game

In most games you see stars in the background, you shoot asteroids or you live on planets. But in Solar 2 you ARE these objects! Enter a universe where you must prove yourself to the resident god-like figure by doing its many bizarre and varied tasks. Or just ignore it and see how big you can grow!

Solar 2 is an open-world, sandbox game set in an infinite abstract universe. Play constructively: grow your system, nurture life on your planets and attack enemy life in huge space battles. Play destructively: crash into other objects and cause chaos, use your orbiting objects like wrecking balls, steal planets from other systems.

Key features:

  • Dynamic abstract sandbox universe. Changes and evolves as you do.
  • Non-linear missions and open-world gameplay.
  • No boundaries. Drift forever in ambient space bliss.
  • Full of weird eccentric humor and stuff.
  • Extensive custom sound track.

The screenshots really do not do this game justice. The formula isn't new in itself (if you've played the first evolution level of Spore, Osmos or Flash-game 'flOw', it's basically that idea (bigger consumes smaller), modelled on orbital rotation and gravity.

You start life as a small bit of rock - a tiny asteroid. You must smash into other rocks in order to grow. Grow enough and you will become a barren, rocky planet. Gather more rocks into your orbit and absorb them for your planet to grow. When it's large enough, your planet can sustain life (which has benefits and shortcomings - I won't say what as it's a bit of a spoiler). Once your planet is HUGE, it can become a minor star and draw other planets into its orbit. Be the biggest solar system. Become a binary star system. Become a black hole! Survive as other systems try to attack your marvellous achievement and turn you back into an empty, tiny planet! Best of all, you keep that planet or system. When you reload, you carry on where you left off.

Besides making your own star system, there are objectives to carry out if you wish. They're fun and challenging, but to be honest I just enjoy making the biggest star system. The controls are excellent for both keyboard (sorry - no mouse) and gamepad. A simple concept really nicely executed. Overall, this is a superb little game and I highly recommend it as one of those time-filling diversions when you don't want to dive into your huge AAA title.

The universe is flat, like this game.

The purported "sandbox" only exists as a place for you to gain or lose mass between missions - there's nothing to do except run into stuff and run away from stuff. Your "reward" for becoming the biggest thing in the universe is to get sent back to a lower weight class to run some missions. Since everything is floating around randomly in space, there's no sense of "place" anywhere - pick a direction, it's the same stuff everywhere.

Meanwhile, the missions themselves are either "Run your asteroid/planet/star into his, see who wins" or finnicky to the point where it feels luck-based. None of them are particularly interesting, and so there is nothing in this game that is particularly interesting either.

I haven't played this game for a long amount of time, but I am a strong believer in the idea of gamers deciding on their opinion of a game within the first few minutes of gameplay. So, armed with my little experience wiht this game, I decided to write a review, telling others why Solar 2 is not that good a game and is not worth a great deal of money.

First of all, one of the most important mechanics in a game to make it fun to play are the controls, the perfectly sensitive mouse controls and their transition to controller in the indie masterpiece Jamestown being a prime example of this. However, this game begins with you controlling a meteorite drifting through space. 'An intersting concept,' I hear you utter towards your monitor, 'I would like to see how this game would work.' The game has you control the meteorite with a mouse, which is probably the best way to control something like this, begging the question, 'How did they get it so wrong?'

Your meteorite ends up shooting through space at rediculous speeds (where did its inertia come from? I don't know, but that's only part of my point) and stopping is virtually impossible. Velocity is not controllable, and you end up staying at a constant speed. Then, a mysterious voice asks you to do certain tasks, such as 'Helping your metorite friend become a meteor' by colliding it into other rocks. Again, I hear you saying: 'This is interesting Portal style humour, this could be my cup of tea after all!' Trust me, it isn't, as the preciseness required to complete this mission is unachieveable at the speeds you are travelling at and with the sloppy mouse controls.

Now, one mission seems a bad thing to put a game down on, but all the missions require the same amount of accuracy that is just impossible to achieve. Some missions also repeat themselves throughout the game, and, if you were to 'die', you are spawned in a random position, meaning you could spawn next to an über-powerful enemy, and 'die' once again instantly, or spawn literally minutes of game time away from any missions, planets or any sort of civilization.

This is not a review saying 'This is not my kind of game'. Instead, it is saying avoid this game at all costs. My point in that statement being if you saw a review saying 'It's not my kind of game, but others might enjoy it' on games such as Air Control, Ride to Hell: Retribution, Towtruck Simulator 2015, Ashes 2012 and Dungeon Keeper Mobile, would you buy it? In the same way, avoid Solar 2, as you may well soon see it in a list among those 'games'.

Luckily, I recieved this game in a Humble Bundle, so I didn't pay full price for it. Please do not pay full price for this atrocity.

Amazing game to pass the time!
Fascinating to be able to crash into a planet and suddenly get a feeling you just murdered a billion people :D
I highly recommend getting this game for those who love to be able to waste a few minutes and not regret it after!

I have really enjoyed Solar 2 so far.

You are free to do whatever you want. After building a life planet, seeing it thrive, small spaceships will start circling your planet, and when you become a star, start gathering life planets.

This is not a 200+ hours game. I bought mine in March 2013 and have booked a total 14 hours. I take half an hour here or there, extending my star system. It is great for relaxing.

As a recreational sandbox universe builder, I give it 10/10

One of those genuinely fun games that can be played mindlessly or with premeditated strategy.
Also some funny dialogue.
Neat stuff.

A fun romp of a game. Not exactly much in the say of strategy and only a modest challenge unless you really want to try for all the achievments. Still playing through a few times and toying with your Solar systems as you do is well worth a go. It's a nice break from hard core strategy or FPS just to try a complely new game mechanic that works.

Short, simple, funny game with nice gameplay. I reccoment this title to people who like space themes and want to spend some good hours in game. Also you can play using gamepad.

Very fun game. Even if the quests bore you, there's enough free-roaming sillyness to entertain.

Be a planet, grow a civilization to destroy anyone who looks at you cross-eye. Be a star and steal planets from your neighbours. Be a supermassive black hole and devour the universe.

So much fun.

Simple and fun game, based on gravity. Some of the missions are quite tricky to figure out.

When you first play this game, you start as an asteroid, smash into other asteroids to become a planet, collect even more asteroids to seed life, etc. In that sense this game is really great, there are awesome challenges for almost every level and there are other planets with life and aliens to fight. It really was great back then, but there is a time when you have done all the challenges, and got most of the achievements, when you ask yourself what to do next. And this is really THE reason why I don't recommend this game, after the campaign is over there is not a lot to do left (apart from froming a 40 star system, which I do not recommend trying even though it is an achievement). The surface is there, but the essence is not. After you have unlocked all the star templates, you could go back to the beginning and play all missions again, but it didn't feel like a good experience anymore. I would even say that a modding API couldn't cure that, which is why I cannot recommend this game to anyone who is searching for something to spend more than a few days on.

Solar 2 is a fun, relaxing, mass-building game simillar in concept to Katamari. Carry out missions for the entity or explore and get as large a solar system as you can.

Solar 2 is a game where you are an asteroid, which then crashes into other asteroids and becomes a planet, you then absorb asteroids and become a small star due to the extreme gravity in the center of the planet.
You then evolve into a medium star, large star, neutron star and last a black hole (followed up by another secret thing)

It's a fun game, but the price is somewhat too high as you could get better games (not like this is a bad one) for the same or lower price.

Positive :

- You become a black hole
- You can affect asteroid fields and send dousens of asteroids to crash into an opposing star system.
- You can crash into other star systems to destroy them.
- You can change game logic
- The big Crunch

Negative :

- Repetive gameplay
- Could need multiplayer for more longlivety

Fun but short. I finished it in about 2 hours.
The extra missions that you can complete were uninteresting in my opinion, and also some of them were too hard.
Fun concept, but after completing it i dont find any interest in it anymore.

I don't know- maybe I'm not playing the game right, or maybe I'm just bad at it, but the game felt terrible all the way through.

The movement was what made it so unbearable for me. There are two ways to move: slow and monotonously, meticulously avoiding any stray asteroids in your path, or barreling through space and taking hits like you owe money to Mike Tyson. Even if you try to move at a slow and cautious pace, the orbital strength of other neighboring bodies is often strong enough to pull you in and smash you, and you won't have the momentum to break out of it.

The minigames are just bad. Either dodge a bunch of things being thrown at you, or don't smack the planets, just the rocks orbiting them. The game MIGHT have some redeeming qualities if it can be made into a touchscreen game for mobile tablets, but I don't see that happening soon.
