You know, I got this game on a give-away. I had played it already on Xbox 360 but I’m an old fan from the series, and I was considering picking it up for PC since I no longer have that console. What I didn’t know however, is how bad the PC port was. As usual I will talk first about what the game does poorly and then move up to the good stuff:

First and foremost, what mostly ruins any fun you might have with Saints Row 2 on PC is that, as I just said, it’s a port. A really bad, horrible anal evacuation of a port. Now for what I know the port was NOT done by the original devs and instead made by a different company (the Windows version was made by CD Projekt or something like that), but f#cking hell on a pogo stick made of hats, there’s no way they could’ve looked at this and think it was properly finished. Let’s do something different here, I’ll list out some examples of what problems you can expect on this port, if you think you can deal with them, then go ahead and consider picking it up, if you don’t, then just try to play it on Xbox instead:

First, the frame-rate. It never drops below single digits but it sure as hell tries. It’s extremely inconsistent and will most of the time stay low enough to make shooting a pain in your #ss but never low enough to be game-breaking.

Driving controls are as bad as an abortion done with chainsaws. A lot of activities and missions task you to drive AND shot at the same time, however the slightest turn on your vehicle will also move the camera, which makes aiming to a single moving target harder than beating Dark Souls with a Guitar Controller. It also doesn’t help that the driving controls are EXTREMELY sensitive, and just tapping a direction will make the vehicle pretty well take a 45º turn to that direction.

Screen resolution is also something so f#cking basic and yet so stupidly gone to hell. You’ll have most likely to mod the game to have the game run in a screen resolution that runs well on your screen.

The keyboard control layout is pretty damn vomit inducing by default. Aiming at people feels more like a struggle, thank Morgan Freeman that the enemies are mostly incompetent and won’t kill you so easily. It can easily be seen when trying to spray walls, as it feels insanely difficult to move the mouse arround because it still seems to think your mouse is an Xbox joystick.

Lastly there are bugs running rampant on the game. There are a few that are quite hilarious, such as hostile NPC’s killing each other for apparently no reason whatsoever, but then come the “not so funny glitches”. Things like touching the water with a car and suddenly be sent a thousand meters into the sky to then take half a minute to die by the fall. Things like some of the bosses pinning you down to a wall and constantly doing the same attack which you can’t block before you can even run away from him OR EVEN GET UP FROM THE GROUND, killing you eventually.

The game is a broken mess of a port. But does it have good stuff on it? Yeah! Most people consider it the best Saints Row game, and I do believe it deserves such a title.

To begin with, the story and characters are well written, voiced and feel alive, a problem that the previous game had. They’re not as one dimensional, and some of them are actually quite f#cking entertaining.

Second, the music. The first game had an okay list of radio music, and next games tried to have less variety but better music; however I like it more as it’s done here, there’s a bit of everything and you can just pick whatever you like the most. I mean for f#ck sake, this game had FUNK MUSIC. Most of the time I end up hearing The Mix anyway, but the Funk one is my second pick.

Guns are also pretty okay, nothing too spectacular but works pretty well. Sure as hell better than how broken they were in Saints Row The Third, that’s for sure.

There's also a better variety on distractions and side-activities. Sure, the game pretty much forces you to go through them to be able to keep on with the story, but later games do that as well, however they're all fun to play in here. Specially the Septic Avenger, which doesn't have you driving and thus works perfectly with the butchered port controls.

Lastly, the map feels much bigger than the maps of later games, and WAY more alive. There’s more ♥♥♥♥ going on, there’s more meaningful buildings, there’s more activities, there’s more distractions, there’s more different people on the streets doing different stuff, there's tons of everything.

Overall, do I think this game is recommended? Sorta. If you’re a fan of open world games, wait for a sale and get your ♥♥♥ ready for the broken #ss port, however I do suggest you instead play it on console where you’ll be able to play it without issues. If you DO decide to try it on PC, do look for mods like the Resolution Fix one, and make it work better and be more playable. On a sale, it’s quite a game that will offer hours and hours of fun… And glitches… But mostly fun.

TL:DR version: Good game ruined by ♥♥♥♥ port. Game runs poorly and there’s glitches up the ♥♥♥. If you can take the time to look for mods that fix what the devs didn’t bother to, you’ll find a really good open world game here, totally worth picking on a sale.

Great game, but horrible port. Possibly one of the worst ports of all time.

Now this is a GREAT game and I strongly recommend it, espicially since I picked it up for $2.49 and it provided me with 50 hours of good fun. But the pc port has a ton of issues, and I'm going to list them here.

-There are some optimization issues. Now I have a fairly low end laptop with intel hd 4400 and 6 gigs of ram, and the game ran ok with the lowest settings at 720p with 25fps-40fps and noticeable stutter when driving. but I've also heard of people running the game with a gtx 960 and such and are getting ATROCIOUS framerates on max settings (keep in mind this game came out in 2009, that's 7 years ago.)

-Even with the GOTR mod my game was crashing CONSTANTLY. It was so bad that everytime I completed a mission, I had to restart the game to make sure that it wouldn't crash mid mission. It was incredebly annoying and led to many a times of me throwing my mouse because it crashed mid mission. This could of been just my hardware but either way it was horrible.

-Although I haven't had many noticiable glitches, there are a ton of reports of different game breaking stuff on forums. I had a problem where whenever I completed a certain mission, my game would crash annoyingly.

Althought some problems still exist with it, I suggest install Gentlemen of the Row. It'll fix a lot of the problems and allow you to customize what mods you want. http://idolninja.com/sr2.php

This game is very good for people who don't have enough money to afford a "Proper Gaming PC" (Like myself) I play it and however this game is good for being made when it was made (I have no clue when it was made lol) but this game is really great and I encourage people to get the game :D

Love the game but the sheer number of issues and very frequent crashes makes this a very sour experience.

IF you can run it well then go ahead and play it but if you can't then you might as well not bother.

Eventho this game is old and not that pretty its still a great game, after this game Saints Row coundnt compete with GTA titles so they went the SR4 route with super powers and not being serious but this game is pretty serious with a story line and everything but i know what youre thinking, who buys a game like this for the story? I just want to blow stuff up. This game is good for both the story and just messing around blowing things up and using cheats overall i would recommend this game for someone who has a bad computer (like me) but still wants to enjoy PC gaming and having an open world GTA esc game. 8/10 I would play it again

Awesome game with an interesting story and unique gameplay.

Have put numerous hours into the PS3 version of this game and its DLCs.

If I'm going to be honest, the PC port is pretty bad as it is highly unoptimised and has many performance errors, issues and bugs. One way around this is to install idolninja's Gentlemen of the Row mod, which is a customisable mod pack that has a wide range of options. (Would highly recommend this). Default control setup is awful.

I honestly prefer the console version only because the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 versions have DLC and less performance issues and have decent controls, but the PC version has mods.

Due to GameSpy closing down a few years back, co-op and multiplayer don't work anymore.

If you would rather better performance and two story expansions and one clothing and style expansion, choose the console version.
If you would rather have mod it but only have the base game, choose the PC version.
