About This Game

Nidhogg is the epic award-winning fencing tug-of-war, full of graceful acrobatics and clumsy stabs. IRL yelling and excitement may occur, in this ultimate two-player showdown of fast-paced fencing and melee attacks.

Beware, advantages in Nidhogg are often fleeting, as new opponents continually spawn in your way. Use a variety of fencing maneuvers while armed -- lunges, parries, and even dirty tricks like throwing your sword. If swordless, press forward with punches, sweep kicks, dive kicks, rolls, and wall jumps.

The combat arena stretches in both directions, although besting an opponent only gains you ground. Matches aren’t won or lost with a single kill, but with a series of kills granting you right-of-way to run/fight/flee to your own goal-zone.

Each arena holds different strategic formations and chokepoints to use to your advantage. Until you reach your goal-zone, anything is possible. Only one thing is certain in Nidhogg… the only way to win is to outwit your opponent. En Garde!

The level layout is repetitive, some levels make it very hard to focus on actually playing the game, and you feel like after a few games you've seen all that is to offer. I honestly cannot see this being any more than a cheap party game that you'll never play otherwise. It expects you to know how to do things such as throw your sword and rip fallen enemies to pieces, even though you aren't told how and they are vital to gameplay. If you want to experience the game, play some cheap flash games- it's of the same level of quality.

Played it way back before I bought it, had too much fun but the price was steep. Coming in at 17 dollars Canadian and 15 American it's pretty damn expensive for what you get. That being said the gameplay is intense and fun and very very replayable. Finally bought it for myself and a friend when humble bundle was selling it for a dollar. Buy this game if it's on sale or if you really have the money to throw at this little content.

Very fun quick game. A lot of laughing moments with a friend. But not much variety. Still I don't think it needs it. But for how little variety there is, it's far overpriced at fifteen. I'd say one to five. Still, I've had fun with it, and that's what matters, so recommended if you have someone to play with.

Fun bag of chips type game. Okay at parties, not much else. Even at parties it won't be the life of the party, but it might have a couple good bites. If you get it free or super cheap it's reasonably fun.

It is absurdly overpriced though. Also the online netcode is/was awful, leading to less people online and thus worse ping and a worse experience and ability to troubleshoot in a vicious cycle. Do not expect online to be fun other than to laugh at the jankiness.

I am not recommending this game only because of the price point. If you can get it for a buck or two, then fine. Otherwise spend your money on something better.

It's a great game IF and ONLY IF you have 2 controllers and friends to play with in real life. The online play isn't reliable the game feels really bad playing on a keyboard. Keep that in mind before buying.

Good one to keep around for when a friend comes over. Friendships can be destroyed very quickly by the ol' cartwheel across the screen

I love this game so much that I decided to join my school's fencing club, but I quit after I found out that the winner of a fencing match doesn't get eaten by a giant dragon. It's just not the same.

Online multiplayer is straight up broken. De-sync to hell, you win but the other player still sees you on the first room lol.

Nidhogg is to me more of a "rat race" to see who can win better than the other person, and is missing both the fun deep interactions of blazblue, and the wacky lighthearted nature or towerfall. Nidhogg isn't a terrible game, and you might like it, but I didn't.

Nidhogg is appealing in so many ways.
In fact, it's a game full of so many good design choices, that it's a shame it is often overlooked. Gameplay is easy to grasp, but leaves the player with a lot of room to fine-tune how they approach combat. It's a tug-of-war that rewards strategy, and which lends itself to some really satisfying wins. Coupled with colourful, stylized pixel-art - and a soundtrack that's unconventional, but incredibly catchy - I have a hard time complaining about any of Nidhogg's design elements.

However, it suffers from the same problem that a game like Gang Beasts does (in its current state): for a game that is so clearly meant to be played with friends or a community, multiplayer is just far too inaccessible. Matchmaking in Nidhogg is painfully vacant. But where a game like Gang Beasts is making strides towards things like community building and online play, Nidhogg has already moved passed them.

So, while I recommend Nidhogg to anyone looking for something easy to pick up, challenging, visually striking, and relatively cheap; they'd better be prepared to play it alone.

Basically a great game to play with some buddies. I can't imagine this being even mildly fun alone, but with some friends and some intoxication this game becomes a hell of a good time. I can't say it has enough content to justify the $15. This is more a game I'd suggest spending under 10 bucks on.
