9/10 – IGN

About This Game

Nidhogg is the epic award-winning fencing tug-of-war, full of graceful acrobatics and clumsy stabs. IRL yelling and excitement may occur, in this ultimate two-player showdown of fast-paced fencing and melee attacks.

Beware, advantages in Nidhogg are often fleeting, as new opponents continually spawn in your way. Use a variety of fencing maneuvers while armed -- lunges, parries, and even dirty tricks like throwing your sword. If swordless, press forward with punches, sweep kicks, dive kicks, rolls, and wall jumps.

The combat arena stretches in both directions, although besting an opponent only gains you ground. Matches aren’t won or lost with a single kill, but with a series of kills granting you right-of-way to run/fight/flee to your own goal-zone.

Each arena holds different strategic formations and chokepoints to use to your advantage. Until you reach your goal-zone, anything is possible. Only one thing is certain in Nidhogg… the only way to win is to outwit your opponent. En Garde!

This is one of the most intense pvp experiences on steam. A classic example of less is more. A true minimalist masterpeice. Recommend to players who like to get competitive with their friends as well as those who enjoy spilling some technicolor, pixelated blood.

£10.99?

NO.

After paying a tenth of that while Nidhogg was on sale, I made the unfortunate mistake of inviting some of my friends to play it with me.They now avoid it like it's the plague, which makes the fact that I am actually capable of beating them at something for a change kind of redundant.

There's much to love about the premise- a series of gory, pixelated duels in various different locales- and indeed the execution, which is often sublime- but the lack of any noticable online optimisation paired with one of the most excessive price tags I've ever seen for something which- at least for me- amounted to a few hours of 'fun' with friends makes it difficult to reccomend, even while on discount.

Having not played it locally doesn't (at least in my mind) make the daylight robbery that is 17 dollars any less significant, and it's hard not to be upset when you think about it.
At the end of the day, if you feel like buying Nidhogg while it's discounted, be my guest. If you're a masochist and on a spending spree, why not buy it full price? If, however, you are in search of a truly entertaining online experience to play with your mates? Buy Mount Your Friends.

Trust me, the 'swords' are just as good. ;)

Fencing. Screams, Pixel blood everywhere. Giant man eating worms. Fisticuffs. Stabbing people with long pointy things. 10/10. Would shed pixelated blood again. Single player very short/aracadish but don't care. So many rainbows of pixel blood.

It's a great game IF and ONLY IF you have 2 controllers and friends to play with in real life. The online play isn't reliable the game feels really bad playing on a keyboard. Keep that in mind before buying.

Online multiplayer is straight up broken. De-sync to hell, you win but the other player still sees you on the first room lol.

So simple... So fun. Bought it as part of a Humble Bundle, and probably wouldn't have looked at it otherwise.
The description is spot on - a fencing tug of war. Nothing more to add really - Controller works great (other than a misplaced pause button).

Best enjoyed 1-on-1 with an 11 year old son who appreciates gameplay over graphics and can actually tolerate losing to his Dad... No mercy.

Pros
+Fencing feels good
+Energetic soundtrack that is difficult not to love
+Nice graphics
+It's something that was never seen before
+Very competetive
+With friends it's absolutly amazing

Mediocre
=Playing alone will get you bored

Cons
-Only 4 maps (They are good thougth)
-Only 1 (!!) gamemode
-The online is kinda empty
-WAY overpriced, it's just to much for so little content
-"Singleplayer" is only a cluster of the same 4 maps wiith progresivly more difficult bots.

My verdict
7.5/10

This not a bad game but because of lack of content (wchich wouldn't really be a problem if not for the price tbh) I cannot recommended for a player that is going to play this game alone. If you are going to play this game with a friend then it's going to be a really fun time.

Good mechanics but.. unfortunately, as other comments mention, networking seems to be completely broken.
Probably still a good time for hot-seat play, if you have a regular group of buddies for that.
I only paid bundle price, but for me the broken online play leaves me not recommending it.

"HOW THE F-UCK?"

"WHAT THE F-UCK? HOW?"

"F-UCK YOU."

"YOU'RE F-UCKING CHEAP."

And many other quotes I have said while playing this with a friend.
