(FIRST ACTUAL ATTEMPT AT A REVIEW LEAVE FEEDBACK PLZ) TL;DR: IT WAS MADE IN THE 90s! BUY IT!

Get Hammer of Thyrion to run this game. It gives you a lot of resolution options, some great texture filtering and allows the game to run in 16:9, 16:10 etc. I highly recommend it.

When I was younger this was a game I played often and alongside Quake 1-3, Unreal 1, Thief: The Dark Project, DOOM 1 & 2 and HeXen: Beyond Heretic, HeXen 2 was one of my first games. BUT MY GOD I DO NOT REMEMBER SO MANY SPIDERS BEING SCATTERED AROUND THIS GAME! Now days I cannot bring myself to get out of the starting level because of the sheer amount of ♥♥♥♥ing spiders there are. To anyone who has extreme arachnophobia. DON'T BUY THIS ♥♥♥♥ING GAME! Other than the needless swarm of arachnids this game is solid and is one of Raven's better games. Raven has always had a knack for making me ♥♥♥♥ myself :D (I got over my fear of HeXen 2's pathetic spiders after playing Dark Messiah of Might and Magic. My god those things are frightening).

I'm going to just say that HeXen 1 was amazing. I will try to make a general rule in this review to talk as little about HeXen 1 as possible because that game is the pinnacle of my FPS experience.

History: HeXen 2 is an FPS game developed by Raven Software and published by id Software in 1997. It is the third game in the Serpent Rider series (or as some people have called it, the HeXen/Heretic series). Raven Software also made an expansion pack known as Portal of Praevus for this game which adds a new class, new levels and other great things. In 2000 the source code for this game was released under the GNU lisence so if you want to make a source port for this game, go for it (and send me a link :D). History lesson over plebians. Time to analyze the game.

Strengths of HeXen 2:

Combat: HeXen 2 runs off idTech 2 so nearly everything in this game is solid because John Carmack is god and idTech is the greatest engine of the 90s. So with a great engine running this game the question we must ask is: Did Raven utilize the engine to its fullest? Absolutely! The combat in this game feels great. Enemies can be cut up into tiny pieces, gibbed and a load of other things. Enemies are also brutally difficult and will kick your ♥♥♥ but it doesn't feel as artificial as some other games. The only problem I've noticed are a few bugs in the NPC animations . Some enemies have dodging animations that seem to always give them invincibility frames even if you manage to predict the dodge and hit them while they're performing the animation which can make the combat frustrating. Other than that flaw HeXen 2's combat is quite enjoyable and I almost had as much fun slashing through spiders in this game as I did gibbing demons in Heretic.

My ranking of combat from each game:
1. The anonymous game (The game that shall not be mentioned is here for reasons.)
2. Heretic (Heretic's combat is almost exactly the same as DOOM with a couple of things thrown in here and there.)
3. HeXen 2 (Has 4 classes but suffers from a few bugs. It tends to feel a bit clunky and unbalanced at times.)

Level design: HeXen 2's level design is notorious for being extremely tricky as well as being extremely good. I won't say too much but you will become confused and will most likely need to look up a walkthrough. I enjoyed the level design though.

How it stacks up:
1. Heretic (E1M1 is legendary. Of course it's here.)
2. The unnamed game (Pretty much set the standard for complex level design.)
3. HeXen 2 (Even though this game has great level design it's not as iconic as the other games. Still great though. You will get stuck. Nice and challenging.)

Weaknesses of HeXen 2:

Graphics: It's a game from the 90s of course it will look dated. However compared to games like Unreal 1 and System Shock 2 it doesn't hold up quite as well to the other games from that era. If you can't overlook the graphics I recommend finding some graphical enhancements for this game as it is too good not to play.

How it stacks up:
1. HeXen 2 (What did you expect. Quake engine vs Doom engine. Quake engine wins)
2. The game with no name (Meh still looks better than DOOM)
3. Heretic (See above)

I recommend playing the Serpent Rider series in chronological order:
1. Heretic
2. HeXen: Beyond Heretic
3. HeXen: Deathkings of the Dark Citadel
4. HeXen 2 (I recommend purchasing off of GOG to get the DLC, but I bought the HeXen bundle though so I have HeXen 2 on steam as well as DRM free)
5. Heretic 2 (If you can find a copy. Good luck :D)

Ranking of each game in the Serpent Rider series:
1. Heretic (People have said this game has aged poorly. I don't feel it.)
2. HeXen: Beyond Heretic (The only reason I rank this game behind Heretic is because I've played Heretic more. HeXen is better but Heretic was pretty much my first FPS game.)
3. HeXen 2 (No I'm not saying this because of the spiders. This game could have no spiders and I would still rank it here)
4. Heretic 2 (Not the biggest fan of the 3rd person change but it's unique and the game is still worth playing. This is also after 1997 so this is after the devs responsible for Heretic and HeXen 1 left. ♥♥♥♥ing Activision)

Fun Gl version of the old Hexen II game. Who can't love the Quake engine fps games? This one involves a few more RPG elements and a surprisingly lot of terrain to travel. A great distraction on a saturday afternoon. Look out for Heretic also.

Quake 1 but in a medieval setting, you get to play as one of the 4 classes (one of which is the manly paladin who fights things using his fists and later, a magic-powered sword and throwing axes) that differ only a bit from each other save for their passive perks that they get by leveling (yes, it's prolly the first FPS with a leveling system).

The game might feel a bit clunky for the modern gamer what with having no mouselook unless changed in the command console, blocky visuals and the fact that the areas are rather dark so i suggest getting a source port.

Very good game.

In what other FPS can you do melee combat with medieval type fantasy creatures?? And good graphics too.

The only other I know are HeXen I.

Some people say that this is only for retro gamers but they are wrong. This game is simply the best in its genre.

9/10

A classic from the Golden Age of PC gaming; Hexen II is a dark fantasy take on the quake engine.

The single player rewards skill and FPS ingenuity as you solve the mystery of a desolate land.

Multiplayer has frenetic action reminiscent of the original Rise of the Triad.

Steam: where is the Hexen II expansion, Portal of Praevus?

On the plus side, the weapons are far less overpowered this time around, and the modified Quake engine allows for far more complex level design, on top of a 3D look that hasn't aged perfectly, but still is more pleasing to the eye than enemies that look like they're made from cardboard. They also played it up as much more of an RPG this time around, giving each class a set of visible stats that automatically level up when you've gained enough experience points from killing enemies, giving you an incentive to fight rather than just run past everything. The puzzles are also largely improved, most having solutions that don't require you to activate some unknown wall or something. No, this game will tell you, and you'll probably be able to figure it out without a guide.
On the negative side, the Quake engine. While it's good to look at and everything, you'll have to do a bit of tweaking to get the resolution accurate, set mouse controls, and all that stuff, and it all has to be done manually. It's not a huge complaint, but it's just a quick pain that you have to go through whenever you install the game.
Even if you weren't a fan of the previous games, I'd suggest giving this one a go.

This game will only seem appealing to a narrow group of players. If you were born in the 70s or to the 80s or wish to see where the FPS genre came from, then sure. Being as I am a retro gamer; I simply love this game. Not as nostalgic as the first but gold none the less.

In the early days of Quake and Doom the games were generally a one trick pony. In the Hexen and Heretic they implemented a inventory system as well as selectable character classes; something new to the genre and with this one a level up system even.

It's worst flaws are the dated graphics and some of the puzzles are quite frustrating. You must pay attention to detail and remember large levels to progress in any sort of enjoyable time/manner.

Steam should have the expansion... boo.

A first-person shooter with some light RPG elements, and a Metroidvania. You know what this game could've used? A map.

This game really brings back old memories, as I was a big fan of Hexen as a child, it's nice to see a revival of it, for the newer generation too experience. The only problem I can find is the fact that my old Windows '98 ran at 800x600 resolution, and if your resolution is hd (Mine is 1366x768), it can distort the entire game, menus and all. I suggest playing in a windowed mode, that is slightly bigger than default, to get the optimal gameplay experience.

Great classic from the past. Very challenging puzzles and fun gameplay. Good music for when it was made, and a good class selection that adds a bit of variety.

Finding Hidden Rooms: The Game
All the fun of a mindless gorefest wrapped up in a giant interconnected world with impressive level design and backtracking out the ♥♥♥. There's a level system, but it doesn't really stop you at any point for being underleveled; just makes your potential to bomb the ♥♥♥♥ out of demons better. Make sure to play co-op with a few friends and friendly fire for best results.

Based off of the original quake engine, Hexen II is quite stunning in both it's technical aspects and its overall appeal as a game. Continuing where the original Hexen left-off, this game adds some twist in the medival storyline, expands the Hexen universe, and provides us gamers with an easily digestable narrative. Gameplay-wise Hexen II puts an emphasis on ranged combat, but melee combat also feels very satisfying (seeming as you can decapitate and quarter your foes once they're down). The leveling system isn't robust, but because the game is more action-oriented the RPG elements are more of an addition rather than a main attraction. The wide variety of enemies and open world compliments the different classes to play as, and substantially increases the replayablility. Overall if you're on the fence about getting this classical masterpiece or if you seem vaguely interested in the vintage fps genre, GET IT!! You won't regret this purchase.

It's like doom but magic. My two favorite parts are how it works on my netbook and how jumping on a grain mill's windmill going 0.5 mph blows you to bits like jumping on a helicopters blade

Slyver Belmont, HeXen 2 was not meant to be played on a joy stick it was made in 1998, this is another reson the graphics are not as good as what we have today(graphics do not make a good game) btw their is a look up and down buton, look it up in the options, that is wher you change the resolution too(rant aside) i feel this is still a game worth the price becasue i feel this is a great rpg and each charater you play has thier own interesing stratagy to them. this game also contains some minor puzzls so it's not all hack and slash, thier are also 5 difrent zones you will play through after fighting each boss that have thier uniqe enimys and traps in them, progresivly geting more difricult in each zone, and then thier is the best featur off all, cheat's:).
