I have always been a huge fan of the age of empires games. When the steam summer sale started, I figured I would branch out and try some new strategy games. This has been one of the most addicting games I have ever played. The gameplay can get very complex, especially when playing large games. It took me a while and some reading to get into some of the more complex elements and I still, (after around 30+ hours) feel like there is a lot to learn. If you have time to put in, this is a great game to play. If you're not okay with putting several hours into a game, only to lose because some random civilization across the world ends up winning a science/cultural victory, then this might not be for you. If you like a challenge and complex strategy, then you'll enjoy this game. Definitely recommend it, especially if it's on sale. Go ahead and get all the dlc with it. You won't be disappointed.

*2 hours later, still playing*

I play Europa now, but this deserves a good review. This game had me more satisfied than my wife did, which explains to me why she left while I was getting nuked by Ghandi. But here's the thing, are you looking for a dynamic world-sized country+nation playing game? Choose Europa Universalis 4, looking for a badass small-scale scenario playing game? This game's all you. Don't waste 2 years on a game that doesn't fit your style though, lol.

I can never forget that day.

The day when my grandpa died.

I was only 8.

He called me to his bedside and whispered to me, in a voice feeble yet somewhat unsatisfied.

He said to me, "My lovely grandson, I have nothing to give you in this life, as I have been poor and unfortunate,"

"Money and fortune, women and sex, lush and class, I can give you none."

I wasn't feeling any bit of dissapoint, as I knew very well of him, of his life, of his potential, of the legacy he could leave to his descendants.

And then there was, as I remembered correctly, a short silence.

"Except for this."

My hand was tightly grabbed and, the next thing I remembered, was a 4-GB-black-Kingston-flash-drive-like object being secretly put in my hand, so secretly that not even the people around me had noticed.

"Finish my life's work." Those were his last words.

After years and years of attempting to figure out just what that only file in the flash drive was, here I was, sitting in front of my laptop, Civ 5 was released.

The next thing happened can only explained by me as providence: I copied the file to civ 5 save folder, opened civ 5, attempted to load the file.

It loaded.

It was a Marathon game, on its 284th turn.

There was only one city left, and it was surrounded by enemies' scouts.

The city health bar was already depleted, and I had 23 workers that were, even the closest ones, at least ten tiles away from my city.

........................................

Years have passed.

There is, like the beginning, only one city left.

Except that one city, is the only one not owned by me.

My right hand trembled as I reached the "Annex the city" button, never knowing the cause of the tremble being either years of non-stop playing, or the fact that I am now only one button away from fulfilling my grandfather's wish.

I looked out the window, tears in both my eyes formed two vertical lines across my face.

Noticed the image in the window, the reflection of yet another old man with eyeful of tears, crying, yet satisfied.

I stared at the blue sky, whispered:

"I finished your work, grandpa."

What can I say that nobody else has said yet? Civilization V is that game that when you start playing it, you won't see the dawn of day again for at least a week. Your friends and family will be wondering if you're still alive. Your dog will have died because you forgot to feed it. A week later you're still playing that marathon game against 11 other civilizations, trying to get the nukes before Gandhi does, researching faster than the Babyloniers, getting a better navy than Queen Elizabeth, not noticing that in the real world, outside your new overlords the alien race of s;jf;fgajwnr ncxas;laj have taken over. All your friends have died by now. Your family has been taken as slaves. But that's okay, cause you live in a brave new world now. You don't care about those wacky aliens. You're your own master of the world now. Why care, when you can play just one more turn.

I made 6 nukes then used my UN votes to pass a non-nuclear proliferation so no one else could build them.

Ghandi wasn't happy.

>started a new quick save, didnt like playing a full length game atm
>merica
>get in, things go well to start out with
>meet ghandi
>ghandi offers peace
>accept, not knowing the dangers of ghandi
>fast forward to the great age, me and ghandi destroyed half the city states, and annexed england
>we have great fleets of ships in the sea
>massive army
>im 2nd in largest army, ghandi is 1st by at least double
>allied with russia by now, the power trio
>russia is 3rd
>we all have defensive pacts
>go to invade spain who didnt accept a trade deal 1000 years earlier, and denounced me
>all goes well, when a message from ghandi pops up

uhm ghandi what are yo-

>war
>by this time its modern age
>nuclear subs emerge off the coast of spain
>ghandi pulls tanks behind me and russias troops
>its like shooting fish in a barrel
>subs pop up off the coast of me and russias cities
>ghandi wipes our army, lays waste to our coastal cities
>stealth bombers drop even more bombs
>all out naval war ends up in the end of the american-russian fleet
>ghandi leaves a city in both me and russias nation, just one
>he surrounds it with half his massive army for each

>he nukes us then achieves a science victory

>After long time away from this game, decide play casually with a friend
>Instead usual (small) continents we started at Earth map and decided random our civs with raging barbarians
>Got Russia and started at Siberia
>"Welp this is awkward"
>Because most of my lands are tundra i'm building farm every piece dirt i could find
>3 barbarian camp spawned as triangle position to my capital and they sending their hordes
>Lost my chances at library while fighting and spending every 200 gold i got to warriors, then lost stonhenge then decided not build any wonder at all
>But it was too late my too close neighbour Egypt already expanding to most rich lands "i actually own"
>Decided going tradition
>Settled first 4 cities for mostly natural resources
>Only got wine alongside with gems so we're bunch of drunkard happy people
>I'm literally at the bottom of the list
>Because of Egypt i'm pushed to tundra lands so all of my cities are small farming villages with population of 1-3
>People already in classical, racing for wonders while i trying to fix my economy which is -12 every turn, and it eventually made my science 1 like 8 turns.
>Learnt that my friend is started at India as *Indians* -Native American lol- so we're pretty much neighboors
>"Omg f*cker did build that great library literally first time"
>"Egypt completed pyramids" we're joking about historical accuracy level of this game
>Happens to be there is Atilla at the bottom of China's real world territory
>"Ouch we're f*cked up"
>"I dont give flying f*ck anymore, this is not going to my win"
>100 turns later; Atilla still regularly declares war on us and sends his hordes to literally bulldoze us but because of stupidness of this games AI we always make fool of him with terrain and stuff so he cant win
>It is year 1400, finally fixed economy but i tried so hard so i got 2 great merchant and highest GNP of world
>My country is still rural and low populated while Egypt settled their 8th city
>As last desperate attempt assembled every possible army i could and declared war on Egypt
>Holy f*ck it is -32 gold with Golden Age
>Happens to be Egypt the one who's feeding my economy with 3 caravans
>Took every city they had with 200 years of fighting except they settled in place of Kiev, "oh look i got puppet Ukraine with me now, and it is going to hate me forever like real Ukraine too"
>My friend were decided to stand with me against Egypt, so i protected his lands against hordes of Atilla
>"So we're now like Putin and his best pal Esed eh?"
>Largest country in the world with highest populated army
>I'm playing with Russia and literally have lands the real Russia owns
>Still rural and low on tech, only wonder i got is Hanging Gardens
>No port city, even didnt got the compass tech
>"I need to reach Mediterranean"
>There is Songai in Arabistan, Anatolia and Balkans, they also founders of Islam and trying hard to spread it
>"Kebab must be removed"
>Again Atilla declared war on me with Songai alongside him
>"It is my time to shine"
>And now this is kinda spooky, it is not actually that historically right but it kinda is
>Trying to fight Songhai, their "cavalry" beating my ♥♥♥ off, i'm losing every piece of army but trying to hold the line with remmnants, their one unit is holding and killing my two units
>"Welp it is kinda familiar"
>Started losing my frontier cities to them
>"This is familiar too"
>We fought like 200 years straight with taking and losing our frontier cities repeatedly
>"Omg this is familiar too.."
>They finally got poor and lost most of their units and they're worst at science while i spam units from all of my cities and got better at tech everytime with espionage and rushes
>"Holy hell this is familiar too"
>My friend was dominating at the sea while i was dominating at land, he came with his superior fleet and small shore force to accompany it to take their capital with rushing their one tile widht sea passage
>Year is 1918
>Whole Middle East is now war zone and burning
>Just completed my 3rd factory and choose Order ideology because i got like 20 cities.
>We finally beat great Songai, once one of the strongest empires of the world at middle and early renaissance age, we're now spliting and colonizing it. My friend took whole Arabistan as offsea colony while i took whole Anatolia and Bosphorus for sailing Mediterranean, they got only one small city because of our pity at the middle of our new lands..
>"HOLY SH*T, I'M DONE"

This was the very best game i played with best historical refferences happened randomly & absurdly..

JUST BUY IT
