Take ‘One More Turn’ in Civilization VI

We’re excited to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Civilization franchise by announcing Sid Meier’s Civilization VI, the next entry in the award-winning turn-based strategy franchise. Be sure to follow the Steam Community group here and add the game to your Steam wishlist!

http://store.steampowered.com/app/289070
Sid Meier’s Civilization VI, set to launch on PC on October 21, 2016, offers new ways to interact with your world, expand your empire across the map, advance your culture and compete against history’s greatest leaders to build a civilization that will truly stand the test of time. Your story begins later this year!

Sid Meier’s Civilization VI includes:

  • EXPANSIVE EMPIRES: See the marvels of your empire spread across the map like never before. Each city spans multiple tiles so you can custom build your cities to take full advantage of the local terrain.
  • ACTIVE RESEARCH: Unlock boosts that speed your civilization’s progress through history. To advance more quickly, use your units to actively explore, develop your environment, and discover new cultures.
  • DYNAMIC DIPLOMACY: Interactions with other civilizations change over the course of the game, from primitive first interactions where conflict is a fact of life, to late game alliances and negotiations.
  • COMBINED ARMS: Expanding on the “one unit per tile” design, support units can now be embedded with other units, like anti-tank support with infantry, or a warrior with settlers. Similar units can also be combined to form powerful “Corps” units.
  • ENHANCED MULTIPLAYER: In addition to traditional multiplayer modes, cooperate and compete with your friends in a wide variety of situations all designed to be easily completed in a single session.
  • A CIV FOR ALL PLAYERS: Civilization VI provides veteran players new ways to build and tune their civilization for the greatest chance of success. New tutorial systems are designed to introduce new players to the underlying concepts of Civilization so they can easily get started on a path to victory.

This game should be treated as a mandatory training simulator for anyone wanting to work in education or run for public office. Completely serious, here.

Now, I'm not saying it's a perfectly realistic simulation. Far from it. However, it will quickly demolish any racial and/or nationalistic delusions the player holds and forces them into the harsh reality of why societies succeed or fail - and the fact that most of it comes down to where started out on the map, a few "minor" decisions early on that snowballed into major consequences centuries later, and no small amount of plain random luck.

It also shows us how technology evolves and the iterative nature of scientific progress. That is to say it demonstrates how everything is build on top of everything that came before it. It also demonstrates how the world started off as mostly one big land grab until it ran out of land to grab, and how the timing of our world wars shortly thereafter was almost inevitable. And, much like real life, how the modern "stalemate" has transformed the nature of war into a class of competing cultures and jockying for position, if only because all the players left on the board are simply too big to be taken down directly.

As for the game itself, compared to Civ4 the graphics are obviously better. The new "one unit exclusive" hex mechanic took some getting used to, but in the long run it's still doable and does make unit rotation & survival more important than the old "stack everything to the max" method. Most important, however, is that this is the Civ game that opened the door to modding and the Steam Workshop - and that makes a world of difference, trust me.

If Civ5 has one flaw anywhere I'd say it was in not getting Leonard Nimoy to come back & do the tech blurbs for them a second time. I'd like to hear how that decision was rationalized in the board room.

With all DLC

The AI is terrible, the diplomacy is terrible, the social policies are unbalanced (pick up tradition and rationalism or you probably lose), the civs are unbalanced and the multplayer is buggy.

This is my first time playing Civ V. At first glance, Civ V is great - it has spectacular graphics, and a great audio track. The social policies system and the Science system are attention-grabbing and appear to be well thought out. But beneath the surface, Civ V doesn't quite live up to the plug. The game can be buggy mess - often times, I won't be able to click the next turn button, for example, because it says "A Unit needs Orders" when I have given all of my units orders. This is after putting in all obtainable patches, two years after the game's initial release! The combat in Civ V involves terribly very little strategy - as long as your units are not hard-countered by the enemy's (this is extremely simple to work out) all that matters is who has the biggest military. Civ V's strategy lies entirely in what order the player researches technologies, adapts policies, chooses to produce, etc. and has little to nothing to try and do with combat - reading Sun Tzu's The Art of War will not assist you here. Capturing a city takes at least 3 turns, even if your opponent has no military and you've got several sturdy units assaulting the city. Multiplayer support is horrible, with people perpetually disconnecting and bally whereas i am either in the lobby attempting to urge a game along, or already playing one. There is no thanks to change game settings once you click the "Host Game" button and open your lobby. To do so you've got to kick everybody out and begin a brand new game. This is ridiculous, strategy games from a decade ago have the ability to alter settings whereas within the lobby. Diplomacy with AIs is impossible - even a long-time ally, who I've had multiple trade deals and analysis agreements with, who is so much weaker than me, will declare war on me for no reason... twice! The only indication I had (which was quite obvious) was that the AI stationed its military units near my territory for many turns before attacking. Nothing on the diplomacy screens hinted that the AI disliked me lmao. However, the AIs have supposedly been improved in the Gods & Kings growth... I'll see if there is any truth to that.

I have to give Civilization V a 7/10 because it's fun to play, and it seems like some effort was placed into its creation. From what I've been told by longtime fans of the series going back to Civ 3 or four, Civ V is prettier, but a step backwards wherever gameplay is involved. The exclusion of key gameplay features from earlier Civ games, such as espionage and faith, was clearly a cash grab for Firaxis, now that they are charging $30 for an expansion addon to deliver more content to Civ V. I'm sick of developers churning out pretty games that have worse gameplay than their predecessors. Civ V is a prime example of this, therefore I really cannot give them a positive review.

Yes I do recommend this game... The Complete Edition with the Brave New World and Gods and Kings DLC's.

I DO NOT recommend Civ 5 vanilla; if for some bizarre reason you can't or won't get the expansions for Civ 5 buy Civ 4 instead, as Civ 4 was a more complete game at initial launch (and it was narrated by Leonard Nimoy).

Civ 5 Complete > Civ 4 Complete > Civ 4 Vanilla > Civ 5 Vanilla

Some believe that the world started from an explosion. If an explosion were able to transform something amazing, i'd throw a bomb at my house to transform it into a mansion

Do you know what this means???

We were wrong about ghandi all along!!

When he nukes us, he actually wants us to become even greater! This changes everything.

10/10 would let a city throw rocks at my stealth bomber and die again.

Plenty of Civs to pick from so you can mix up playstyles.
