About This Game

Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved is a old school style shooter, but remixed for the 21st century with next generation graphics and deep, modern gameplay. Playing is simple: you are a geometric "ship" trapped in a grid world, facing off against waves of deadly wanderers, snakes, and repulsars. Your aim is to survive long enough to set a high score!
Avoid the spawning enemies, and shoot them down for points. You can also fire smart bombs, which destroy all bad guys on the screen. Save these up for when the going gets really tough!
The more bad guys you kill, the higher your score multiplier goes (2x, 4x, etc.). The higher your multiplier, the more you can score. But don't die, as you lose your multiplier and have to build it up again from scratch!
  • Addictive "just one more go" gameplay, with mesmerizing graphics.
  • Pixel perfect recreation of the Xbox Live Arcade game.
  • Support for keyboard, mouse, and dual-stick gamepad play.

System Requirements

Minimum: Windows XP, 1 GHz 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) CPU, 512MB RAM, DirectX 9.0c, DirectX Video Card (128MB memory - Shader Model 2.0 support required), DirectSound-compatible sound card, 150MB free HD space, WEI Rating: 4.0 (3.0 required)

This is one of my favorite games of all time. Very addictive, fast, and flashy also the best twin stick shooter. If you're a fan of smash tv then this is a must have. I hope the other Geometry Wars games get on steam one day.

The game that started it all. Retro's "asteroids" on steroids with a challenging and fun arcade gameplay! I originally discovered this game on the xbox 360 and was stoked to see it here on Steam. There's a mobile version for the nintendo DS which took the series on a totally different route with new gameplay mechanics and RPG elements (odd, huh?) if you own a DS I strongly suggest checking that out. I also strongly suggest checking Geometry Wars 2 as it adds a multitude of different game modes that are all very unique and challenging within the gameplay of Geometry Wars. 26th of November this year they're releasing Geometry Wars 3 -- which will be in 3d with rotating maps. I'm stoked! I'm going to be getting it on the Xbox One as I want to return to the original time of playing it on the console and personally I believe its easier to contorl with two joysticks rather than wasd and a mouse. But ... i am tempted since steam has the exclusive pre order offer. Maybe both on both consoles? It's that good.

I don't think there's anything I can say in this review that hasn't already been said. All I'm gonna say is that if you've never heard of Geometry Wars, then either A) you've been living under a rock for the last 10 years, or B) you've never played an Xbox 360.

I would buy an XBox 360 just to play this game and its sequel on XBLA. Can someone at Steam get Geometry Wars 2 on Steam for purchase!?!?!?

That's what a game is meant to be, rapidly understandable, fun at will, and which progress with your skill.
Before, I played Counter Strike in deathmatch to work things off , but GW is much more fun and soon you start, it allows you to focus on something else, there's absolutely no way to be passive.
The gameplay is really well done and balanced, simplistic and complex. I use to compare it to Tetris, because of the simplicity and fun.
Cheers!

A tremendous bang for your buck, providing a very excellent arcade shooting experience. While it seems more optimized for a game pad, my best scores were generally from using a mechanical keyboard.

This is what Happens when you mix Pure fun and Hype into one Game. Easy to pick up, Can kill boredom in seconds and the soundtrack (The one song) never gets old, I constantly find myself bobbing up and down to the beat while playing.
An easy 9/10, Its so cheap just buy it.

As of the March 30 2015 update to Geometry Wars 3D Evolved, that game includes a classic mode which is functionally identical to this. As a result, this game is completely obsolete and the new version is by far the better value. Buy that instead. Original review below.

---

I wouldn't say GW is a *bad* game per se, but one of the most entertaining aspects of the xbox 360 version was the leaderboard system. Since this game only has local (offline) leaderboards, there isn't much to propel you to get a braggable high score if you don't have friends around to play it. It isn't really Bizarre Creation's fault that there isn't steamworks integration here, since they are closed down, but that was probably the second most important feature beside the main game.

That being said, the core gameplay is exactly the same as the xbox 360 version and there is full controller support, which is nice.

Get it if it’s less than £4 - You might want a controller to play as it makes it easier to get the hang of. There is a newer version on XBLA but not for PC. Get put into a daze/trance in how it looks as a spectator.

Classic twin stick shooter arena gameplay that is very challenging. Despite being an older game, the graphics (although not HD) still hold up well & are styled to give the game its distinct feel. Geometric shapes with the saturated palette makes it easy to distinguish what is going on in the chaos of coloured pixel explosions!

Using the XBox 360 controller, I found the input to be responsive, giving you great control over your ship's movement & aiming. That being said, it still takes some time to become a master at Retro Evolved.

Super cheap title now offering great value, must have for any twin stick shooter fan & certainly also worthy of anyone's collection who likes a challenge. One of the real standouts in the genre. It is important to note that this entire game is also a dedicated game mode now available in Geometry Wars 3: Dimensions. This is still a most worthy pick-up but you may get better value in the long run out of the current release.

I watched RoosterTeeth playing this game on the 360 and decided to buy it on the PC. And I have no regrets. The game is really engrossing and addictive although there is only one objective : Destroy them all. There is a large variety of enemies ranging from simple squares to the huge snakes and blackholes. Only when you play it, can you understand the frustration when you die just a thousand short of breaking your highscore. The soundtrack is amazing. I personally love it.

This game is simple yet fun. This reboot of the classic arcade game features beautiful colors, graphics, and an intuitive design. The fast pace, second by second, adrenaline pumping action of this game really pulls you in. Trying to achieve a new high-score or to simply enjoy the reactionary gameplay, it offers great replay value for a cheap price.
