About This Game

Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved is a old school style shooter, but remixed for the 21st century with next generation graphics and deep, modern gameplay. Playing is simple: you are a geometric "ship" trapped in a grid world, facing off against waves of deadly wanderers, snakes, and repulsars. Your aim is to survive long enough to set a high score!
Avoid the spawning enemies, and shoot them down for points. You can also fire smart bombs, which destroy all bad guys on the screen. Save these up for when the going gets really tough!
The more bad guys you kill, the higher your score multiplier goes (2x, 4x, etc.). The higher your multiplier, the more you can score. But don't die, as you lose your multiplier and have to build it up again from scratch!
  • Addictive "just one more go" gameplay, with mesmerizing graphics.
  • Pixel perfect recreation of the Xbox Live Arcade game.
  • Support for keyboard, mouse, and dual-stick gamepad play.

System Requirements

Minimum: Windows XP, 1 GHz 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) CPU, 512MB RAM, DirectX 9.0c, DirectX Video Card (128MB memory - Shader Model 2.0 support required), DirectSound-compatible sound card, 150MB free HD space, WEI Rating: 4.0 (3.0 required)

Very hard to set joystick controls up. The default setting had me pressing 4 different buttons to shoot in different directions. Why can I not set it so that I can shoot in the same way I'm moving?

When I tried to change in settings it mapped every option to the trigger on my joystick and couldn't be undone. There was no option to reset controls so I had to reinstall. Disappointing seeing as mouse and keyboard doesn't play very well (have to shoot up/down/left/right or at 45 degree angles in between). Would've thought the joystick would work well but it doesn't. A shame I don't have a controller instead

Geometry Wars is a great in-between game; meaning that, if you have 10 - 30 minutes it can be a great way to spend that time. Playing with friends and passing the controller is another great use of this game; but as one could expect, it loses its luster over time fairly quick. You move your ship with the left analog, and shoot with the right. There are plenty of mechanics and changes in theme to keep one's interest piqued for a decent time.

Still, I do recommend the game, provided you understand the sort of game you're purchasing.

TLDR: This is an arcade-esque twin stick shooter. It's worth the $4, but you'll need a controller to play it right.

This game was a launch title for the Xbox 360 when it first launched in 2005. Yet due to its simplicity still holds up today. Take control of a shape as you shoot other shapes in hopes to get as high of a score as possible. But beware as the waves of enemies get bigger and faster the longer you stay alive. It's a test not only of dexterity, but also of endurance. While this version lacks the retro mode the 360 version had, it's not really that much of an oversight as the Evolved mode will still have you hooked. You may play in small doses, but it's a game you'll be coming back to again and again and again and again and again and again and again.

Should you buy this: Yes, but ONLY if you have a controller. It's a twin stick shooter, so that should go without saying. You could theoretically play this with a mouse and keyboard, but just because you can doesn't mean you should. If you have Windows 8/10 you can hook up an Xbox One controller and it instantly hooks up.

Worth: $4 is a fair price, although you can usually get about a dollar off if you wait until it goes on sale (it doesn't happen often though)

The version on the 360 had more game modes. Wish they had those, but this will suffice for the price. Get it on sale if you can help it.

A classic twin stick shooter from the early XBLA days. Still holds up well, and the two sole songs are great.

I remember playing this on older hardware with full graphic settings; it would lag a bit when tons of stuff spawned at the same time. Now it runs smooth at a constant 144 fps 1080p, really sweet.

It's an awesome game. It's best to play with the mouse option "Target" imo.

I would buy an XBox 360 just to play this game and its sequel on XBLA. Can someone at Steam get Geometry Wars 2 on Steam for purchase!?!?!?

That's what a game is meant to be, rapidly understandable, fun at will, and which progress with your skill.
Before, I played Counter Strike in deathmatch to work things off , but GW is much more fun and soon you start, it allows you to focus on something else, there's absolutely no way to be passive.
The gameplay is really well done and balanced, simplistic and complex. I use to compare it to Tetris, because of the simplicity and fun.
Cheers!

This is one of my favorite games of all time. Very addictive, fast, and flashy also the best twin stick shooter. If you're a fan of smash tv then this is a must have. I hope the other Geometry Wars games get on steam one day.

A tremendous bang for your buck, providing a very excellent arcade shooting experience. While it seems more optimized for a game pad, my best scores were generally from using a mechanical keyboard.

This is what Happens when you mix Pure fun and Hype into one Game. Easy to pick up, Can kill boredom in seconds and the soundtrack (The one song) never gets old, I constantly find myself bobbing up and down to the beat while playing.
An easy 9/10, Its so cheap just buy it.

As of the March 30 2015 update to Geometry Wars 3D Evolved, that game includes a classic mode which is functionally identical to this. As a result, this game is completely obsolete and the new version is by far the better value. Buy that instead. Original review below.

I wouldn't say GW is a *bad* game per se, but one of the most entertaining aspects of the xbox 360 version was the leaderboard system. Since this game only has local (offline) leaderboards, there isn't much to propel you to get a braggable high score if you don't have friends around to play it. It isn't really Bizarre Creation's fault that there isn't steamworks integration here, since they are closed down, but that was probably the second most important feature beside the main game.

That being said, the core gameplay is exactly the same as the xbox 360 version and there is full controller support, which is nice.

This is an excellent game, for such a low price. I may have only played a few hours of it, but I got many more on the original DS release. You could have 10 friends watch you play it, and it wouldn't lose a frame. Constant 60fps on a low performing computer, combined with bright colours and a great way to prove your reflexes, there really is nothing bad about this game. 1000/10 for such the low price that it is.

Classic twin stick shooter arena gameplay that is very challenging. Despite being an older game, the graphics (although not HD) still hold up well & are styled to give the game its distinct feel. Geometric shapes with the saturated palette makes it easy to distinguish what is going on in the chaos of coloured pixel explosions!

Using the XBox 360 controller, I found the input to be responsive, giving you great control over your ship's movement & aiming. That being said, it still takes some time to become a master at Retro Evolved.

Super cheap title now offering great value, must have for any twin stick shooter fan & certainly also worthy of anyone's collection who likes a challenge. One of the real standouts in the genre. It is important to note that this entire game is also a dedicated game mode now available in Geometry Wars 3: Dimensions. This is still a most worthy pick-up but you may get better value in the long run out of the current release.
