About This Game

Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved is a old school style shooter, but remixed for the 21st century with next generation graphics and deep, modern gameplay. Playing is simple: you are a geometric "ship" trapped in a grid world, facing off against waves of deadly wanderers, snakes, and repulsars. Your aim is to survive long enough to set a high score!
Avoid the spawning enemies, and shoot them down for points. You can also fire smart bombs, which destroy all bad guys on the screen. Save these up for when the going gets really tough!
The more bad guys you kill, the higher your score multiplier goes (2x, 4x, etc.). The higher your multiplier, the more you can score. But don't die, as you lose your multiplier and have to build it up again from scratch!
  • Addictive "just one more go" gameplay, with mesmerizing graphics.
  • Pixel perfect recreation of the Xbox Live Arcade game.
  • Support for keyboard, mouse, and dual-stick gamepad play.

System Requirements

Minimum: Windows XP, 1 GHz 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) CPU, 512MB RAM, DirectX 9.0c, DirectX Video Card (128MB memory - Shader Model 2.0 support required), DirectSound-compatible sound card, 150MB free HD space, WEI Rating: 4.0 (3.0 required)

A tremendous bang for your buck, providing a very excellent arcade shooting experience. While it seems more optimized for a game pad, my best scores were generally from using a mechanical keyboard.

Like many people, started playing this back in the early Xbox 360 days, and I find it still holds up as being an extremely enjoyable arcade game, and if you at all enjoy these types of games, I really can't recommend this enough. Geometry Wars feels like an homage or love letter to classic games like Defender, Space Invaders, and Asteroid.

The gameplay is extremely fun and finds the right balance of casual gameplay and simultaneously being very challenging while even approaching unforgiving/punishing in how hard it can be. It's hard to explain the experience of how playing this game can be relaxing and leasurely and, in the same session, become intense and anxiety-provoking, causing a release of adreniline in the player. It's also difficult to explain how rewarding it is to feel yourself naturally responding to the challenges the game throws at you and finding yourself handling situations and reacting differently, getting through a point in the game that used to have you stuck. The game itself is very well made and has a great feel to it, and the graphics are beautiful.

My only two minor quibbles with the Steam release are lack of an online Leaderboard (probably has something to do with Activision getting shutdown and that they just used Xbox Live's leaderboard functionality before) and that the Steam release doesn't have any of the unlockable achievements the Xbox 360 version had (how hard would it have been to include those?).

I payed $1.99 for this on Steam and would have actually paid more. Again, I can't recommend it enough for a modern take on classic Arcade gameplay.

This is one of my favorite arcade games to play in short bursts, whether I'm killing a few minutes before work or winding down just before bed. It's a simple premise: you play a ship hellbent on destroying animated geometric shapes. The dual stick control scheme and trigger for the bomb button make it fun and intuitive to play. I actually prefer the clone Grid Wars 2 to Geometry Wars because I can customize the grid, I prefer the music, and it's completely free.

That's what a game is meant to be, rapidly understandable, fun at will, and which progress with your skill.
Before, I played Counter Strike in deathmatch to work things off , but GW is much more fun and soon you start, it allows you to focus on something else, there's absolutely no way to be passive.
The gameplay is really well done and balanced, simplistic and complex. I use to compare it to Tetris, because of the simplicity and fun.
Cheers!
