About This Game

Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved is a old school style shooter, but remixed for the 21st century with next generation graphics and deep, modern gameplay. Playing is simple: you are a geometric "ship" trapped in a grid world, facing off against waves of deadly wanderers, snakes, and repulsars. Your aim is to survive long enough to set a high score!
Avoid the spawning enemies, and shoot them down for points. You can also fire smart bombs, which destroy all bad guys on the screen. Save these up for when the going gets really tough!
The more bad guys you kill, the higher your score multiplier goes (2x, 4x, etc.). The higher your multiplier, the more you can score. But don't die, as you lose your multiplier and have to build it up again from scratch!
  • Addictive "just one more go" gameplay, with mesmerizing graphics.
  • Pixel perfect recreation of the Xbox Live Arcade game.
  • Support for keyboard, mouse, and dual-stick gamepad play.

System Requirements

Minimum: Windows XP, 1 GHz 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) CPU, 512MB RAM, DirectX 9.0c, DirectX Video Card (128MB memory - Shader Model 2.0 support required), DirectSound-compatible sound card, 150MB free HD space, WEI Rating: 4.0 (3.0 required)

The version on the 360 had more game modes. Wish they had those, but this will suffice for the price. Get it on sale if you can help it.

A classic twin stick shooter from the early XBLA days. Still holds up well, and the two sole songs are great.

I remember playing this on older hardware with full graphic settings; it would lag a bit when tons of stuff spawned at the same time. Now it runs smooth at a constant 144 fps 1080p, really sweet.

It's an awesome game. It's best to play with the mouse option "Target" imo.

I´ve a G27 wheel. And this game. Game controls get really crazy even with the wheel turned off. So I cant play unless the good god of luck let me. So, like, 90% of the time game is unplayable. Bad, Bad game. No thumbs up for you.

I purchased the game to replace my stolen 3DS game, thought it was same with anything. It is just mistake. It is just original Geometry Wars with graphics updates. What I want is Galaxies version which is only for Wii and 3DS.

However.... I decided to give it a shot. Unfortunetly, the game frequenlty crashed my computer every time I started it, led to non-responsable condition, not even with ctrl+alt+del command. I had to reboot my computer after failed troubleshooting. I managed to get it running but crashed after I changed resolution back to my perferred settings. Fixes approved by players or other sources don't help much. I had no choices but requested a refund. The trouble isnt worth my two dollars...

Bizarre Creations, the creator of Geometry Wars arcade series, no longer existed to keep the games alive.

My advice for you: Look up the 'Geometry Wars' clones created by indies like Waves or Gran Vitreous. They are better and compatible with today's computers. Go for them.

its a fun game except
this pc port version sucks more than the ds version
the ds versions so much better
which offers if I remember correctly
multiplayer, more stages, more challenges
more music
and in multiplayer there is co op i believe
if not you could summon against them
which was really fun.

Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved is fun and the price is great - but twin-stick shmups have evolved since this game came out. Pun intended.

Seriously, if you are an indie game fan, get Gran Vitreus or a number of other titles instead. They took the Geometry Wars formula and ran with it! Things are better now - there are perma-upgrades and level succession and leveling up and choices and all kinds of stuff that just makes it better overall.

Once again, does Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved deserve a spot in any twin-stick shmup fan's library? Sure. Is it dated? Sure.

The best thing released in videogame market in the last decade. Perhaps ever. Get in there with some YouTube audio, music, film, podcast, birds chirping, which ever you want. Drink some water. It'll be an expereince unlike anything you've ever played. Every round has something that stands out to me, over the years the game becomes more and more of what makes it so damn enjoyable. It's balanced and fair until it's not but there are safe ways to avoid everything this game throws at you. The nature of videogames. I doubt I'll ever quit playing. Few hours a week, respects your time and doesn't ask for money.

The two sequels don't quite capture the recovery and saving youself. You can fall behind in this game and see the damage coming and AVOID IT. Where as some of the best modes in GW2 and 3, along with many other copycats out there) feel like suicide missions in comparison to this.

There is no other.

I would buy an XBox 360 just to play this game and its sequel on XBLA. Can someone at Steam get Geometry Wars 2 on Steam for purchase!?!?!?

That's what a game is meant to be, rapidly understandable, fun at will, and which progress with your skill.
Before, I played Counter Strike in deathmatch to work things off , but GW is much more fun and soon you start, it allows you to focus on something else, there's absolutely no way to be passive.
The gameplay is really well done and balanced, simplistic and complex. I use to compare it to Tetris, because of the simplicity and fun.
Cheers!

This is one of my favorite games of all time. Very addictive, fast, and flashy also the best twin stick shooter. If you're a fan of smash tv then this is a must have. I hope the other Geometry Wars games get on steam one day.

A tremendous bang for your buck, providing a very excellent arcade shooting experience. While it seems more optimized for a game pad, my best scores were generally from using a mechanical keyboard.

This is what Happens when you mix Pure fun and Hype into one Game. Easy to pick up, Can kill boredom in seconds and the soundtrack (The one song) never gets old, I constantly find myself bobbing up and down to the beat while playing.
An easy 9/10, Its so cheap just buy it.

As of the March 30 2015 update to Geometry Wars 3D Evolved, that game includes a classic mode which is functionally identical to this. As a result, this game is completely obsolete and the new version is by far the better value. Buy that instead. Original review below.

I wouldn't say GW is a *bad* game per se, but one of the most entertaining aspects of the xbox 360 version was the leaderboard system. Since this game only has local (offline) leaderboards, there isn't much to propel you to get a braggable high score if you don't have friends around to play it. It isn't really Bizarre Creation's fault that there isn't steamworks integration here, since they are closed down, but that was probably the second most important feature beside the main game.

That being said, the core gameplay is exactly the same as the xbox 360 version and there is full controller support, which is nice.

This is an excellent game, for such a low price. I may have only played a few hours of it, but I got many more on the original DS release. You could have 10 friends watch you play it, and it wouldn't lose a frame. Constant 60fps on a low performing computer, combined with bright colours and a great way to prove your reflexes, there really is nothing bad about this game. 1000/10 for such the low price that it is.

Classic twin stick shooter arena gameplay that is very challenging. Despite being an older game, the graphics (although not HD) still hold up well & are styled to give the game its distinct feel. Geometric shapes with the saturated palette makes it easy to distinguish what is going on in the chaos of coloured pixel explosions!

Using the XBox 360 controller, I found the input to be responsive, giving you great control over your ship's movement & aiming. That being said, it still takes some time to become a master at Retro Evolved.

Super cheap title now offering great value, must have for any twin stick shooter fan & certainly also worthy of anyone's collection who likes a challenge. One of the real standouts in the genre. It is important to note that this entire game is also a dedicated game mode now available in Geometry Wars 3: Dimensions. This is still a most worthy pick-up but you may get better value in the long run out of the current release.
