What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Quite simply, Nippon Marathon is designed for party play. We wish to ensure that the game will thrive during get-togethers. That doesn't just mean by ensuring the courses we already have are finessed to perfection for multiplayer fun: that means every upcoming course, side-mode and mini-game can be inspired by player feedback to make it shine.

Nippon Marathon is Onion Soup Interactive's first ever game, and so Early Access is an important opportunity for us to make sure players have a role in its development. We have lofty goals for Nippon Marathon - and we want to make sure the game has been perfected before we even entertain the idea of calling it 'complete'.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“How long's a string of tentacles? Actually, the future development of Nippon Marathon is very well mapped out. Accounting for hiccups, unexpected additions, and even giant, laser-eyed panda attacks at our studio, we realistically hope to have Nippon Marathon feature-complete and ready to release in Autumn/Fall 2018.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The Early Access version of Nippon Marathon contains four courses, four playable contestants and a few extra surprises.

For the full version, we are aiming to include:
-At least eight courses
-A full, single-player campaign with a proper story, boss battles and myriad silly shenanigans
-Eight playable contestants
-At least three side-modes
-More collectibles, awards, Achievements, hazards, WTF moments and belly laughs
-Localization for Japan, Korea, China, Russia and more

For both Early Access and the full release, Nippon Marathon will support single-player and local-multiplayer for up to four players.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Our Early Access edition supports one to four local players, and features four contestants and four courses. We've already undergone some rigorous testing, so these courses are approaching a 'final' state - but based on feedback during early access we will tweak the design to improve the flow of the game.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Though we will be adding more content to Nippon Marathon (extra modes, courses and features) during the Early Access period, we have no plans to gradually increase the price during this time.

Once the Early Access period is complete and Nippon Marathon is finished and ready to be released, the price will increase to reflect the extra content and polish.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“As well as tweaking the content that Nippon Marathon's Early Access version will include at launch, player feedback and suggestions will play a massive role in shaping the design of future courses. We're incredibly interested to understand the course features that players love the most, and the side-modes and mini-games that people want to see.”

Developer update #1 - Fixes, localization + L.O.B.S.T.E.R mode sneak peek!

Konnichiwa! It’s been just over a week since we launched Nippon Marathon into Early Access and we’ve been blown away by the love out there for our game. So first of all, a big thank you to everybody who’s picked up Nippon Marathon, who’s played it, or who has simply watched one of the many videos and streams.

It’s about time for our first developer update from Wedy Jones, don’t you think?

Right now we’re busy beavering away on a number of fixes and additions for Nippon Marathon in the coming weeks. Having now amended the Mac boot-up problem we’re looking into a hotfix for a controller issue some people have been experiencing, and we’re tweaking some settings to fix a couple of scoring issues (in particular involving the elevators on Super Ichiba Sweep!) as well.

Content-wise, there’s a LOT on the horizon. Firstly, the support from Japanese gamers has been off the charts! Our first addition to Nippon Marathon therefore will be to add Japanese commentary and also localized text for Japanese, Korean, Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese. You can expect to see this added in the coming weeks.

That language update is then going to be very closely followed by our first Party Game! And we wanted to give you a peek right now.

Meet L.O.B.S.T.E.R Mode: think of it as a cross between Tony Hawk’s classic HORSE party game mode and the Super Smash Bros Melee sandbag-thwacking Home-Run Contest… with a Nippon Marathon-styled running twist. In L.O.B.S.T.E.R Mode you play as contestants in a Game Show hosted by 'Surfin' Jack Cactus. He just loves to pit people against each other and award letters to the losers: Don't let Jack spell out L.O.B.S.T.E.R for you or you're outta the game!

For now, feast your eyes on some early prototype screens (yes, starring some fresh characters) – it won’t be too long before we’ll be letting L.O.B.S.T.E.R Mode loose into the Early Access build…

About This Game

San! Ni! Ichi! Hajime!!! Stretch your muscles and embark upon the ultimate marathon of Japan in a raucous ragdoll party multiplayer racer where anything can happen. Hurdle barrels, outrun Shiba Inu and dive out of the paths of bicycles - all while chucking fruit at your opponents and dashing across planks precariously balanced over waterfalls - in an unreal experience that must be played to be believed.

Four-player madness!
You can’t spell Nippon Marathon without ‘P’, ‘A’, ‘R’, ‘T’ and *checks letters* ‘I’, we suppose… Solo play is supported, but grab up to four pads and enjoy the supreme silliness of gaming’s greatest marathon.

See all of Japan!
Cross the entirety of the land of Nippon in a series of creative courses spanning busy city streets, village lanes, bustling markets, mountaintop shrines, supermarkets and even unsafe sake distilleries!

Wacky characters!
Go toe-to-toe with some of the coolest contestants who ever did, er… contest! Lobster-man J DARWIN, onesie-obsessive Elizabeth Nishibori, school uniform fan Zenbei “Xen Bae” and the completely normal Snuguru Maestro are among the challengers vying for the podium!

Epic pratfalls!
Swinging poles! Giant face-slapping fish! Cyclists! Shiba Inu! Panes of glass! Traffic! False doors! Barrels! Rolling beams! Wobbly planks! Flying fruit! More Shiba Inu! EARTHQUAKES!!!!! Dodge and dive over the lot or suffer the painful and embarrassing consequences of physics-based collisions…

Tons of surprises!
You never know what will happen next in Nippon Marathon. Perhaps you’ll find time for an impromptu spot of slot machine fun? Maybe a news anchor will jetpack in to interview you on the racetrack? Heck, anything is possible…

Drop-in/drop-out play!
Need a bathroom break to squeeze pineapple juice out of your foam lobster claws? Random pedestrian passing by your couch and wants to play? Whatever the cause, hop in and out for the ultimate, flexible party get-together!
