A Sonic game in 3D that's... good? Well, you better believe it. This version of Sonic is a hit, and not just because you can play 2D levels as well. No, it is in fact the blend of these two dimensions that gives the game depth. Neither seems to have to support the other, or make up for the other's shortcomings. Instead, both play styles work together to form a cohesive, fun, and nostalgic run as our favorite blue speedster. While some mini-levels shoe-horn in friend mechanics, the vast majority of the stages are inherently fun and offer a wide array of secrets for replayability.

An absolutely brilliant game visually, and I'm sure the original ports was brilliant, but the fact that the keyboard controls are so annoying does it for me.

Plus, now my computer doesn't register any input I try in the configure section (and yes, I've looked up guides to help) despite the graphics being in the 'recommended' part of the product page, and so the game is completely unplayable until then.

I'm coming back to this game if I ever try with a controller, but for now, it's not worth it.

Original Game: 9/10
Port: 5/10 (when it works)

Edit: I've played about 10 hours of this game offline, hence the low time, before the configure tool played up.

The game is great, the levels are a lot of fun and there are always new events taking place that pull me in further, however, I've got to say that this game was incredibly lazily ported to PC. All of the prompts tell the player to push the XBOX equivalent controls, and the controls are awful! The game tells you to push the Y button when you need to be pressing "W" on a keyboard. You can't reassign the controls either, which annoyed me to no end. You WILL die many times because of the fact that the game will tell you to quickly push certain buttons at certain times and you won't know what the game is referring to. Other than the fact that the game is a very lazy port, it's a good game, but I haven't been so annoyed with a games controls in quite a while. I would recommend buying it for the console it was released on, certainly not on PC.

-One of the worst PC ports of all time

Other thoughts: This is up there with Sonic 3 & Knuckles as my favorite Sonic game of all time. I'd recommend it to Classic and Modern Sonic fans. And despite being a bad PC port, you're still gonna get mods, and 60 FPS, exclusively on PC. But you're not gonna be playing this on your Mom's Laptop.

To much bugs!
I can't play this game without glitching through the game ore trying to avoid them! For 30 euro's I asspect a game that works normaly.

Fun fact: The modern Sonic his controls are the buggiest one with a controller, just walk arround and he will do a lott of side flips over and over again.

I hope there is a way that I can get my moneys back for this game. :/

TL;DR Sonic Generations is a fantastic edition to the series. and can please new and old fans alike. the story has neat little references to past games to make you chuckle a bit. and the graphics are fantastic even in todays standards. the control can be stiff at times but overall feels really nice. i would recomend this to any sonic fan new or old!

START:
This is an amazing game, that ANY sonic fan can enjoy. first lets go over the basics on this game, and how it holds up in 4 main departments.

STORY: The story is a bit lackluster but has some pretty cool moments referencing past games. the story is that a time eater is messing with time and space. and you sonic(s) have to run really fast through past areas in order to retsore it. thats pretty much it. what it does do however to make up for the story that wouldn't even make a mario game. is that there are so many references to past sonic games that any fan new or old will get a kick out of! for instance in the second stage Chemical Plant from Sonic The Hedgehog 2(Tails's first apperance), Tails mentions how the purple water makes him nervous. as in the actual level purple water will fill up that sonic and tails can drown in. Things like this are everywhere in this game and it reall makes me happy.

GAMEPLAY: This time due to time travel two Sonics azre now playable. The new modern sonic that homing attacks, boosts, and has 3d sections. as well as the classic sonic from the genesis games(mega drive everywhere but USA) which spindashes, spin rolls, and spin attacks through enemy's in full 2d momentum based platfroming sections. This is a very smart move by sonic team, as fans of the games are split on which gameplay style they like. as i mentioned before ALL fans will love this as both gameplay styles are avalible to play. %50 is classic, and %50 is modern, so no gameplay style is used more than the other. You will go through the most fan favorited stages from past sonic stages, such as green hill, City escape, rooftop run, etc.

GRAPHICS: I am not one to hate on a game or praise a game just for the graphics, so this section will be shorter. The game look Amazing, even 6 years later and i am still shocked at the detail they put into every section in a game where you normally won't be looking at scenery. for a 2011 game, this holds up as one of the best looking platforming game, and sonic game.

CONTROL: A major part of a game is control, if a game is amazing but the control is not, then that will effect the experience of the player greatly. So how does Sonic Generations hold up? pretty fantastic i would say. The classic sections feel about the same as the genesis games, although one of the most dissapointing aspects i find is you do not gain momenetum rolling down hill. which was a key part of the genesis games especially Sonic 1. apart from that it controlls the same. the spindash returns but is WAY to overpowered, and i found myself flying into bottomless pits. same goes for the returning shield power up. the modern sections have a fair amount of 2d sections so it controlls about the same except for spindash you are boosting. the 3d sections however involve more moving in an oppsosite direction to not get hit kind of thing. controling in 3d platforming areas however can lead to a few deaths i admit.

Sonic the Hedgehog has not had the most celebrated of careers. While his early games are regarded as iconic and influential, an amazing run of mostly bad games in latter years reduced SEGA's mascot to little more than an irrelevant joke. At that point, there's only one thing to do -- release a "best of" compilation!

Sonic Generations takes a number of the very best stages from across Sonic's 20-year history, as well as a few of the not-so-good, and completely remakes them with new content. Furthermore, a second hedgehog is along for the ride, but it's not some horrible silver one from the future!

What could go wrong with any of that?

Sonic Generations (PC [reviewed])
Developer: Sonic Team
Publisher: SEGA
Released: November 1, 2011
MSRP: $49.99. Now $29.99

Sonic Generations teams Sonic the Hedgehog up with none other than Sonic the Hedgehog -- the long-legged Sonic of recent years comes face to face with his pot-bellied past self. When a grinning monster called the Time Eater starts ripping through reality, elements of Sonic's past become erased and the two hedgehogs cross paths. Naturally, it's up to our furry duo to save the day. By racing through famous Sonic stages at top speed, "Modern" and "Classic" Sonic are able to put time back on track and end the Time Eater's mysterious plans. It's not exactly the most sensible of stories, but it's certainly no worse than what we've seen in recent Sonic titles. Packing plenty of self-referential jokes and a glorious "twist" at the end, it's at least an entertaining little adventure.

There are nine main chapters, each based on well-known stages in Sonic history. From Green Hill Zone all the way to Planet Wisp, every console era has been represented quite nicely. Every chapter has a "Classic" and "Modern" variant, with Classic Sonic dashing across sidescrolling platform levels and Modern Sonic racing through 3D-oriented stages. To progress through the game, you'll need to play each stage with both Sonics, making for 18 stages in total.

Classic Sonic is presented almost exactly as he was in his Genesis heyday. The spin dash is back as well as Sonic's inability to home in on enemies -- he'll need to manually bounce on their heads. His stages, slower-paced than the Modern levels, focus on intricate, old-school platforming. The only modern concession is the ability to automatically spin dash with the press of a button, something the purists may hate but that I find aids the flow of the game. If it's a big deal, one can easily spin dash the old-fashioned way by ducking and hammering the jump button.

For nostalgic fans, Classic Sonic is a pleasant return to form. However, there seems to be a problem with his jumping as many of the platforms are far-flung, making crossing wider gaps feel unnecessarily tricky. Either Sonic Team needed to make him able to jump further or these platforms should have been brought closer together. It's not like any of the jumps are completely impossible, but they can get exasperating if one doesn't nail a running leap absolutely perfectly.

It also doesn't help that the game has a habit of placing enemies just far enough across from gaps that Sonic will land on the ground and uncurl a split-second before he touches them, consequently taking damage. These instances feel like real cheap shots that, while not severely damaging to progress, grow increasingly annoying, especially in the latter stages where this issue becomes more rampant.

In truth, I have to admit that the Modern Sonic levels are actually more fun. While there are some truly enjoyable 2D stages, the contemporary variants are almost always more exhilarating thanks to their sheer intensity. Such highlights include an explosive new take on the Chemical Plant Zone and an utterly gorgeous Speed Highway level. All told, there are surprisingly few duds compared to the overwhelming majority of bad levels seen in most of the recent titles.

That isn't to say that duds aren't there, of course. Seaside Hill is a sloppy mess of awfully designed platforming and Planet Wisp is repetitive and slow. As for Crisis City? The fact that it was allegedly a highly demanded level only seems to prove just how demented the Sonic fanbase has become, since it's still the same sprawling mass of ill-placed chasms and confused homing targets that it always was. Still, I remain shocked by the fact that the ratio of good to bad stages is stacked in favor of the positive, marking a revolutionary step forward for Sonic's retail outings.

As well as the main stages, our two heroes will need to undertake "Rival" battles against some famous Sonic characters -- Metal Sonic, Shadow the Hedgehog, and Silver the Hedgehog. These are part-combat, part-racing engagements, with a designated Sonic running to avoid the enemy's attacks before hitting him when he's vulnerable. Each Rival challenge is surprisingly intense and represents some of the more gratifying moments in the game -- especially when giving Silver his well-deserved beatdown.

Every main stage also has a series of challenge courses to complete, and while most of them are optional, Sonic Team couldn't resist making the completion of at least a few of them compulsory. Fortunately, players will only ever need to complete one challenge from each stage in order to progress through the game, and they can choose whatever one they want using whichever Sonic they're most comfortable with.

Challenges come in many flavors. Some of them are races against doppelgangers, others require a certain amount of rings to be collected, and others make use of Sonic's furry friends to complete obstacle courses. Although based on the main stages, many of these challenges are fully realized levels in their own right, some managing to be exceedingly inventive. There's even a stage where you can summon Tails and use him to fly around a 2D Chemical Plant, just like in the Genesis days!

Skill Points are earned via successful completion of a stage or challenge, then they can be spent on minor enhancements to the hedgehogs. These include increased speed, improved ability to collect lost rings, and even power-ups based on classic Sonic abilities, such as the bubble shield seen in Sonic the Hedgehog 3. A wide variety of music can be unlocked and used in any stage -- you've not truly experienced the game until you've played a level with "Sonic Boom" blasting in the background!

Rounding out the package, there are four bosses, each positioned after three levels and pertinent to a certain "era" of the franchise -- Death Egg Robot for Genesis, Perfect Chaos for Dreamcast, and Egg Dragoon for this generation. They feature new twists on famous fights and can be pretty damn epic in scale, though sometimes vague on what you're actually supposed to do.

As a cohesive package, fans tired of bad Sonic games can't help but be impressed by what's on offer. The only consistent issue is that it can be hard to recalibrate one's brain when switching between Sonics, as the two distinct gameplay styles can become a little jarring. It's not uncommon to wonder why Classic Sonic isn't homing onto anything, or why Modern Sonic's jumps feel so unusual. After a few stages, the confusion abates, but instances of crossed wires may crop up now and then.

Sonic Generations isn't a very long game -- it can be beaten in around five hours or so. Still, there's significant replay value not just in the optional challenges but also in simply replaying the main chapters. Quite a few of the levels are so much fun that they're worth multiple revisits, and I've found myself spending up to an hour at a time just beating stuff I've already played. Finding hidden stars to unlock music and artwork and attempting to gain an "S" rank in each stage provide lots of extra incentive as well.

Nevertheless, it would have been nice to have had less optional challenges and more real chapters

If there a game to save your money and you are sonic fan, in progress , this is the game for you . Sonic Generation was realized on 2011 for the aniversary 20th of Sonic the Hedgehog . This game was massive spread through all the platforms available , PS3 , X-Box 360 , PC and DS3 . Not to forget is a complete different game because of the different stages and bosses than the first three.

From the the scratch , the gameplay can be switched into Classic Sonic , with spin dash , spin attack and full 2D Stages , and Mordern Sonic , with a lot more feathures like boost ,homing attack , drift , the stomp , light speed dash , Freestyle Tricks and the stages were on 3D and 2D
Every act got spread and hidden Red Star Rings that unlocks , Skiils , music and artworks .

Talking about skiils , here are all the skiils available to buy classified in Classic , Modern and standard :

Classic Sonic:

The game got 3 Eras (Classic , Dreamcast and Mordern) , 9 Zones ( Green Hill , Chemical Plant, Sky Sanctuary , Speed Highway , City Escape , Seaside Hill , Crisis City , Rooftop Run and Planet Wisp) , 2 acts per-zone , 3 Rival Battle ( Metal Sonic , Shadow and Silver ) and 4 Boss battles ( death egg robot , Perfect Chaos , Egg Dragoon and Time eater)

To conclude , this game has one of the best soundtracks for Sonic Modern Games and for my personal experience one of the hardest Sonic games that I played . Even that I played my X-Box 360 Controller , I was still bad when I started to play it because I was still used to the Genesis Button's setting .
Despite my noob experience at the start , I don't think this is the easiest Sonic games ever . Of course that ANY Sonic game is easier if you play with any controller because it's where the games first , from a Sega Mega Drive / Genesis which is a console .
So if you are one of those who said that is the easiest game EVER , you should think twice . They are people who played Sonic games with KEYBOARD which is hard as HELL.......

Plus , WHY ARE SOO MANY MODS OF THIS GAME ?? This is game is PERFECT already . It Don't Need it ....

Is this because PC Players can't play the 1991 original game on Generations or what ??

Rank : 20/20

Easily the best Sonic game released in a long time, Sonic Generations continues to give me plenty of excitement every time I boot it up. If you've ever played a Sonic game, play Generations. If you've ever wanted to play a Sonic game, play Generations. It's my personal favorite because it gets everything right, aside from a pretty lame story. Buy it. Play it. Love it.

Sonic Generations is a 3D platforming game that fuses classic Sonic and modern Sonic gameplay to give fans the best of both worlds.

As someone who grew up on Sonic games, this game took me back to my childhood memories. I literally almost cried a couple times, to see Green Hill Zone Act 1 recreated with Pixar graphics, it made me really think to myself, is this how I thought the game looked like when I was a kid? You know how when you're a kid and your imagination is much more apparent so 16-bit games look much better to a kid than say an adult. To revisit this level in this way was a dream.

One of my favorite things about this game is that you can change the music of each level/act. I replayed Green Hill Zone Act 1 with the original music and then the hit song "Sonic Boom" and it just gives the game a different feeling every time.

This is a love letter to Sonic fans around the world, a celebration of one of the most iconic and classic video game characters and companies ever to grace the industry. When you've finished this game, be sure to find and install a mod called Super Sonic Revolution. This makes the do that you can play as Super Sonic and yes, Hyper Sonic. It totally revamps the game so it's like you will be playing it for the first time.

Pros
  • Play as classic Sonic (Sonic The Hedgehog series)
  • Play as new-gen Sonic (from Sonic Adventure and newer games)
  • Fan favorite levels are recreated and remastered looking better than ever
  • Relive the most iconic boss fights in Sonic history
  • Tons of side-quests
  • Yons of collectables
  • Hard Mode
  • Mods

Cons
  • Only 2 playable characters
  • Nothing really new in terms of innovation and/or originality
  • Controls are stiff sometimes
  • Short Storyline
  • Side-quests re-use the same maps slightly changed to fit each objective

Final Thoughts:
Sonic Generations is a treat and a testament to any Sonic fan or anyone who played the old Sonic games since the early 90's and dared to keep up with the franchise despite the negativity from the mass of critics.

This is easily the best Sonic game out there. Sega made a masterpiece with this. The story is meh, but the gameplay is phenomenal. The controls are smooth and work well, though you need a controller to truly enjoy them (I use xbox 360 controllers).

Hands down the best 3d Sonic game to date.

Good:
- Beautiful graphics
- Underplayed and actually decent story
- You only play as Sonic
- As always, excellent music
- Gameplay as both classic and modern Sonic is top notch with a+ level design
- You actually get to go fast! In a Sonic game!
- The camera isn't fighting you every step of the way

Bad:
- Poorly optimized for PC. You will have framerate issues unless you have a beefy PC
- Rouge the Temptress mission is bugged and can be a pain in the ♥♥♥ to complete
- Feels a little short, espeically if you aren't going for all the red rings or trying to complete every mission

Overall an excellent title and the best Sonic game to come out in the last several years. A must buy for any Sonic fan.

The game itself isn't to bad, but with mods it becomes pretty good.

Sometimes the level design is really smart, like in Seaside hill act 2 there are 2 or 3 2D sections, but if you play the level well or take a certain path you only have to take a small 2D section, or maybe you don't even have to play a 2D section, but levels like this don't happen much, instead you mostly get levels like Green hill and Speed highway, were if you're good you can beat the level with one hand.

Buy if getting mods, wait for it to go on sale if you're not going to use mods.

Allright, I purchased this game mostly because I heard that you get to play original Sonic 1 in it. So, yeah... After beating the act 1, I figured out that I should do it again, but now in 3d. And so I did and still nothig, so... I beat the game and finished most of the challanges in 2d and 3d, looking for the mistical Sonic 1 all around and couldn't find it anywhere. So, after spending several hours in my noble quest to be able to play Sonic 1 in PC without some sort of simulator, I gave up on my own logic and I went to consult with the oracle (Google), looking for clues of how to get to this point of the game where you'll be able to play Sonic 1... To find out, that you actually can't. Not on PC version, at least. So, yeah... That was pretty dissapointing.

And the game itself is allright, though there are just like... 9 levels and 3 bosses. 18 levels, if you take in count the 3d version of those and 4 bosses, if you count the final one. So, after you beat those, welcome to the challenges and stuff. But it's enjoyable to replay some of the levels, so it's allright. Not a big fan of 3d Sonic, though.

7/10.

Main storyline is pretty short and fun, nice and varied. Kind of makes you miss the old formula, but it's still for the most part a "best of" compilation with some fun extras. Some of the 3-D sections are stinkers and the last boss is a pretty poor attempt, but otherwise if you want a nostalgia trip with some decent platforming, this should scratch that itch. When the cutscenes are poking fun at themselves they're ocasionally kind of funny.

If you can learn to like the "re-used assets mission" format there's a lot of replayability but trying to S-rank some of these things looks like an excercise in futility to me.

Best Sonic game in recent years, a shame boom had to throw away the little bit of momentum this game built up for the Sonic brand again.

Best Sonic game in a long time! But it's definately meant for long-time Sonic fans, and not necessarily newcomers to the series. The game isn't difficult to pick up and play, but there are a lot of inside jokes and references that only someone who has played past games will understand. If you're looking for a first Sonic game, I would recommend picking a different game, tbh. But if you've played any of the older Sonic games, whether they be the classics on Genesis, or the Adventure series, or even Unleashed or Colors/Colours, then definately pick this game up. It is well worth the money!
