If you played the original release of this game when it was first published on Steam, you noticed that the game in higher resolutions were a square in the center of the screen. However Sega has fixed these issues with a patch update and the game looks better in the new 4x3 aspect ration in higher res compared to the original edition. Still you will want to have an XBOX 360 controller to play this game as I've tried to switch my Logitech F310 Gamepad from XBOX 360 Mode to Logitech Dual Action Mode to see what would happen and it was not a fun experience to say the least.

As far as the "DX" label, I don't agree with it since Sonic Adventure DX was originally a Gamecube game and it was ported to PC before the Sega Dreamcast Collection existed. This version lacks a lot of content that was found in DX, including the unlockable Game Gear games that made playing Sonic Adventure DX on the Gamecube a worth while sit down game. At least the frame rate is more steady in this version of the game compared to the PC port however graphically speaking, the system requirements seem a bit much for porting over an XBOX 360 game to the PC.

If you are a pure Sonic fan and you have to have this game, its a must own for any Sonic Fan, but if you are looking for port perfection, this game lack in that department a little more then you think.....

Overall rating (Neutral, minus the camera nuisances the overall game presents in some areas.)

One of the best Sonic Games of all time. I played this when the Dreamcast originally was released here in the United Kingdom and was the first game I ever owned for it. I immersed myself within the game immediately, playing it all day, everyday and whenever I could. When I couldn't? I played it in my mind until I could be reunited with it.

Even after all these years, going back to this game has blessed me with the realisation of how enjoyable it was and still is. The game is simple and fast to beat, but everything else a long side the main missions is what makes it a truly epic game. If you truly love playing this game, everything you once knew comes back to you instantly, I don't think there was anything I had forgotten about this game, and there are not many games that give you that experience, proving how enjoyable and entertaining it is.

The soundtrack is the most memorable part of the game and is by far one of the best sound tracks of any game every released in my opinion. If you haven't heard of CRUSH 40 go give them a listen, however I reckon most Sonic fans know who they are and how amazing their work is. Sure there are some bugs here and there that were in the Dreamcast and Gamecube versions but it's a small price for how nostalgic and great this game is and was for it's time.

All characters have good and cross-weaving storylines that inevitably come together at the end to defeat the 'Ultimate Evil', ignorantly created by the infamous Dr.Eggman.

On the side there is cart racing, and the amazing Chao gardens. Chao are little baby creatures that live peacefully with humans and can morph and gain stats in strength, run, flight etc...and can then be put into Chao races. Once you've completed the game and done what you can, you'll probably find yourself here a lot, as the Chao are just literally the best god damn things ever.

If you haven't played Sonic Adventure/SADX, then I suggest you should. It is by far one of the best games of the Sonic Franchise.

Let's first talk about how I recommended Sonic Adventure. I can recommend this game to anyone who is forgiving, nostalgic and a Sonic fan. Those people will love it. You have to forgive clunky controls, bad camera angles and cringe worthy dialogue for those good moments. "Open Your Heart" playing as you speed across the ruins of Station Square as Super Sonic. That moment on the Twinke Cart minigame when you realize the music is kind of a remix of "It Doesn't Matter"...

I'll never say this game is for everyone. It isn't. For me, it has always been one of my top games. It got me through Junior High and High School. If I was ever feeling down, "Open Your Heart" was there to pick me back up. I love this game. Call me biased if you want. I call me a Sonic fan.

Graphics: For the time, on the Dreamcast, they were excellent. Though, by the time it became "DX" and hit Gamecube, a tad dated.

Controls: Do-able. But not much better.

Audio: Stage music is generally awesome, and fitting. Character themes are... Dorky at times. Voice acting is a little silly.

Replayability: Not much. Mission mode is kind of bad. I enjoy going through story over and over, but that may not be for everyone.

For everyone: Probably a 6/10. It's not for everyone and most will probably find it frustrating.
For me: 10/10. I love this game and all it's flaws.

Sonic Adventure was Sonic's first real 3D-Adventure. It has a great soundtrack (even nowadays), great Levels and overall alot of content (very hard content). It just has to suffer from some small issues. For example, this game has 6 main chars which you have to play through, badly you often have to repeat levels and this makes the whole game a bit monotonous. Another disadvantage of the game is the char Big the cat and his gameplay mechanic, fishing. Badly the mechanic is explained awfully bad , so it is really hard to figure out how this works. This can be really frustrating. The DX-version of the game suffers also additionally of many "new" bugs that the original version did not have. But overall, it is a real great platformer with alot of content. Great levels, great soundtrack, but with some strange bugs, monotonous gameplay and one char that is awfully bad explained. If that still does not bother you, you get a really good platformer!

After having played the Dreamcast, GCN, and finally PC version of this game, I can say that this is pretty decent overall.
It has all the goodies that the Dreamcast didn't, such as the black market, hero/dark chao, and a reward for collecting all 130 emblems (not spoiling it). Of course, it also has the enhanced HD graphics if those are up to your taste (some prefer nostalgia).

Pros:
E-102 Gamma (shooting stages)
Open World (Could be a con for some)
Tails accompanies Sonic in his action stages, and can be controlled by a second player to collect items.
Did I mention Tails isn't in a stupid mech?
Treasure hunting stages are more polished than SA2, and provide a better detection system.
The game feels fluid, and the controls work properly for the most part.
The goals of each stage are clearly explained
Flashy powerups
Excellent menu theme
Chao garden
Hidden emblems that can be found throughout the open world
Intense, action based gameplay (for most stages anyway)

Cons:
Big.
Camera can be wonky (is a problem in all versions)
Screen resolution is somewhat awkward depending on your monitor
Chao cannot be transferred from SADX to SA2 (without the use of mods)
Button to pick up a chao is mapped to the same button that pulverizes it (spin dash)
No online capabilities, so no online bonuses like on the Dreamcast (again, modding may fix this)
Terrible voice acting
Mediocre story
Open world is pretty mundane
No Shadow (I kid...)

Has this game aged well? Probably not, but that doesn't mean it's not fun. It can provide a sense of nostalgia for previous players, and still entertain newcomers. I still prefer the GCN version over this, but this is a solid substitute that can be worth your time.

The narrative isn't nearly as good as I remember and it's a lot easier than I remember. Why did I download this game aga--AMY!!!!!!!!!!!!!! *0*

Aside from all the Amy and Tikal pics I took due to my fandom, I thought to give this game another try, regretting never 100%'d it before. Also decided to give Chaos a chance....I actually ended up liking the Chaos.....and it only took me 13 years to finally get used to them.

The level designs are nice and it's still pretty fun. Though you'll occassionally clip through a wall or suddenly bounce off a wall you should be running on.

It's pretty good, but not as good as I remembered. Still recommended for the nostalgia factor.

Wonderfully awful. Well worth the price for some of the worst voice acting & least-sensical plot in gaming history - & this was considered game of the year material when it released! My how far we've come in the last decade. It ends up being strangely addicting.
10/10, would clip through scenery and fall to my death randomly again.

I think as far as Sonic in 3D goes, the first Sonic Adventure got a lot of things right that games after it failed to grasp -- yes, even in the presence of 4 fishing stages. If you've come to think of Sonic in 3D as running quikcly across narrow paths crossing the abyss, you should at least go back over this game. Levels in this game have more variety in their structure, such as Ice Cap's death-pit-free climb through a circular cave, or the almost Mario 64-like ascent up the Pleasure Castle of Twinkle Park. Part of the reason the levels work as well as they do is that every character has a slightly different way to play. For example: Knuckles' stages are all more open-ended and tend toward larger open spaces, while Tails' stages tend to be more straightforward runs of the faster segments' in Sonic's game. While people who are fans of Sonic mainly from Sonic 3 [& Knuckles] might find these changes in gameplay disappointing, I think they help keep the levels fresh. Since Sonic himself goes through nearly every stage and area on his own (including most of the open areas of Knuckles' game!), it makes completionism a bit less of a grind (although the less said about Big's missions, the better).

That all said, the camera is pretty bad, even now -- and it's probably the reason that the 3D Sonic games after this one tended toward less ambitious level design. This last playthrough I noticed an astounding amount of clipping; I assume this is an issue with the updated version, since while previous versions of the game (i.e., the Dreamcast or 2004 PC versions) didn't have this issue. This is still probably the definitive version of the game. Most of the important graphical effects are here, it runs at a stable 60 FPS on a modern gaming laptop, switching focus doesn't kill the game, and it can run at high-definition resolutions (in a forced 4:3 ratio, admittedly -- but the previous PC release only supported widescreen by cutting off the top and bottom of the screen). The game was rushed a bit to get it out in 1998 before Christmas so the Dreamcast had a killer app, and all versions of the game since (including the bugfixed Dreamcast releases put out for other regions, called the "International Edition" in Japan) have struggled to get a stable game out of it, and even in this recently-patched version many well-documented bugs are still hanging around. On the other hand, it's still probably a more stable game than Donkey Kong 64 -- and supports a wider variety of play interests than "wander around a big map collecting stuff".

Another minor frustration is the lack of cutscenes. While for Sonic's story that doesn't matter much (Sonic's story is defined mostly by the characters around him and he doesn't really develop as a character during it), the other characters all get to be a bit more complex and actually develop as indivduals over the course of the game. Gamma's quest of self-awareness, for example, has a surprisingly tragic end to it for a game about a fast talking blue hedgehog; it's not on the level of a game like Super Mario Galaxy, but it definitely had a lot of thought and heart put into it.

That's basically my summary of the game -- an ambitious but flawed game that definitely had heart in it, before sequel fatigue and shrinking budgets caused the level design to be formulaic and a bit on the bland side. If I were to recommend a 3D Sonic game other than Generations, this would be it.

You'd still do well to check out the Dreamcast release, however, as a few flashy graphical effects courtesy of the console's hardware shading never made it into any of the ports -- Sky Deck in particular has far more dramatic and foreboding lighting and shadows, looking a bit dead in comparison in the DX version. A shame, but these effects are rarely enough to spoil the game; the stable framerate and generally much nicer-looking textures more than make up for it most of the time. (And I suppose a patch to get the proper graphical effect in Sky Deck is not out of the question.)

I've been a Sonic fan for some time now, and of all the Adventures he has had over the years, this is a close favorite of mine. This is my favorite game of all time. It does have a few flaws, and this PC port is not my favorite though. I prefer the Dreamcast version.
Pros-
6 stories
11 levels with different areas for different characters - These are very nicely designed
Nice variety in gameplay with different characters
Awesome final boss
The Chao Garden - This is the only part of it I prefer over the original DC version. It's done better. That said, I still have spent more time on the Dreamcast chao garden due to the VMU minigame and the fact I play it more.
Cons-
It's missing the charm of the Dreamcast version for me completely.
I only would replay Sonic, Gamma or maybe Tails' stages once I beat mission A
Shinier models - This is my opinion, but I think they look worse
The camera sucks on levels that aren't open-ended
Perhaps glitchier than the Dreamcast version
All but one of the levels are played in Sonic's story, so they can be boring after a few plays in the other character stories (The one he doesn't play is Hot Shelter)
Super Sonic isn't availible in the normal stages even after you've beaten Perfect Chaos

In conclusion, I think the positives in this game far outweigh the negatives as most flaws are minor complaints.
This is a true Adventure, but I recommend beating the Super Sonic story and then playing the game again before giving it a review. Some things might confuse you the first go-round. If you don't want to mod your game than you should really choose another version of this. I recommend the Dreamcast or even Gamecube over this and the X360/PS3 ports, but if a PC is all you have then get it.
Seriously though, get yourself a version of this one way or another. It deserves to be played.

In short, it's like a childhood classic for a lot of gamers. The story only has about eight or so hours of gameplay, but the levels have good replay value, great music, and a decently sized environment to explore. The flaws of the game have been talked about before, but if you played it as a child and loved it, the low price definitely makes it an adventure worth having again.

Sonic Adventure gets a 6/10.
