Disclosure - the original SA occupies a special place in my childhood as it was the first time we got a new game on a new console, so it has a lot of the warm fuzzies in it. I've tried to be as objective as possible here though.

Sonic Adventure is a ****ing weird game.

It's a combination action/platformer/racer/pinball/fishing/arcade shooter/puzzle/snowboard game, and it really does seem like Sega were just throwing ♥♥♥♥ at the wall to see what sticks. And, to be honest, most of it actually does. Yes, even the fishing. It doesn't really belond in the game, but as fishing mechanics go it's FINE. Not amazing, not awful, but FINE.

The plot is eh, but I really like the way it's told - I'm a sucker for multithreaded plots experienced from different angles (ask me about Arrested Development Season 4!), and would love to see it used in more games. That said, having to do a big chunk of Sonic's stuff with Tails is rather dull and doesn't add anything aside from new ways to approach boss battles.

Runs very well for a 13-year-old port of a 17-year-old game, didn't have to fiddle with configs or anything to get it going, it just went! Camera's god-awful, mind, and they try to handwave this away by having a boy by the pool in Station Square tell you to "just deal with it". I guess it was made for a controller that lacked a secondary analog stick, mind.

Overall, not a bad game, holds up surprisingly well, give it a go!

This game brings back memories of when I was young. Oh boy, what a game to come back to!

After the success of the classic Sonic games, Sonic goes on a new adventure. The good thing about it is that it's 3D! It's the first 3D Sonic game to ever be released, and with it introduces new characters within the story. Some characters being important, and some characters being... there... (we'll get to that certain individual in a bit).

Sonic Adventure DX introduces 6 playable characters. This being: Sonic, Tales, Knuckles, Amy, Big, and E-102 Gamma. As expected, they will have different play styles, whether it's Sonic running fast through the level, or Knuckles looking for the Master Emeralds. Play Styles:

Sonic - Like in the classics, Sonic will run through a level as fast as possible, getting past enemies and obstacles along the way.

Tales - Each level, Tales have a race against somebody to get to the destinations. Tales can fly, which makes it easier to win.

Knuckles - Knuckles runs around each level looking for 3 Master Emeralds. He can glide, climb, and dig through dirt to find the Master Emeralds.

Amy - Amy gets chased by a robot, and has to escape from it in each level. She uses a hammer to destroy enemies along the way.

Big - Big fishes his pet frog in each level. This is the one play style that I despise because it's absolutely boring! Like, seriously. That's all you do. You fish for a frog. Unless you're a fan of fishing, I have no idea how you can enjoy playing as Big personally.

E-102 Gamma - Because E-102 Gamma is a robot, he shoots enemies with his missile launcher to progress through the level.

In each story, you can get upgrades to further enhance the play style, like E-102 Gamma gliding, for example. If I were to voice my opinion on which story was the best or worst, I'd say Sonic's story is the best, whilst the worst being Big's story (I seriously hate him at this point). I've left out their part in the whole entire story so that you can link the story together. Once you complete all stories, you get a surprise in the end. It's worth it.

I found the action stages to be memorable. I will remember playing through Emerald Coast as the first action stage, and also going through the Lost World. Personally, my favourite is the Lost World, just because of how unique it is compared to other action stages.

As for the soundtrack, they're great. Once you go through the Ice Cap action stage, you'll understand what I mean. There is another feature in the game known as the 'Chao Garden', where you take care of your chaos, and you... feed them to animals that you find in actions stages and then... take part of their body... (I have no idea). Another thing that does is improve in the stats of each Chao, which helps you race in the mini-game that's available. If you get bored of playing each story, you can always pop in the Chao Garden to see how they're doing.

Despite problems with the lip-syncing, it's a classic game that you can get hooked to. Although Sonic Adventure DX is my favourite Sonic game within the series, I say that only because of nostalgia, plus I haven't played much Sonic games other than Sonic Adventure 2 and Sonic Heroes.

Is it the best Sonic game in the series? Most likely not. But it is quite a fun experience. I highly recommend you play this game so you can get into the story, and how everything makes sense.

There still needs to be bug fixes on Emerald Coast, it glitches you when you are going down the slope to go to the whale part or whatever. The glitch is the reason why I can not pass the level, and there needs to be an option to where you can change the controls that you select at the start of the game. Also the walls need to be solid and not glitched out, I keep falling through the walls and sometimes even the floor. So please take the time to fix this somehow and make this game great again.

The Dreamcast version for the Xbox is flawless, but for the PC there still needs to be a lot of fixes.

Sonic Adventure DX: How do I touch a game I love so much. It was a Christmas Morn the gamecube was tis young lad favorite console. This was still before he became addicted to games, He never was that much of a gamer he never cared much about games. Tis wonderful present was under his tree one snowly morn, When he opened it, It was none other then Sonic Adventure DX . The young lad scream not in rage or anger, But in happyness as he loved Sonic. The young lad father would some times set up his old Sega Genesis and Sega CD so they could have fun playing Sonic The Hedgehog and Sonic CD, Following that day the young lad finally was allowed to play Sonic Adventure DX he spent a good portion of the day playing it. Until he got tired, and decided to go to sleep ending our story for now.

Like the weird story thing...

But yeah, You might know by now I love Sonic Adventure DX.

This was one of the few games I enjoyed playing back then, A couple years away until the Nintendo Wii the console that boosted my love for games even more.

I would normally start with a extremely quick summary of the game but. You need to play it >:3
I can't give away story to such a great game. *But the story isn't 10/10 materal, Don't get hopes up*

Sonic Gameplay: This game is a remake of the Dreamcast Version, With some changes. But I'm wayyyy too lazy to get into it...

This is one of the first 3D Sonic Games, This was a great example of what the Dreamcast was capable of *Of course I can't get into it too far* The gameplay for Sonic is Simple, You get a few abilities such as, Jumping Spindash and the apparence of two new moves, Lightspeed Dash and Homing Attacks. These two moves became a staple of Sonic games in general.

Tails Gameplay: Tails is a racing game where you race against Sonic and Eggman, The goal is simple RACE TO THE END.
Tails can fly and attack with his tails duh.

Knuckles Gameplay: Knuckles gameplay is diffrent in many ways, He can glide and climb on walls and dig in the ground.
His goal is to find 3 Pieces of the Master Emerald a plot device in the game.
You get 3 indicators at the buttom that will change colors and make a noise when you get close to em.

Amy Gameplay: Amy gameplay is running away from a robot chasing her named ZERO, To get away from him Amy must use a balloon to escape. She got a hammer and she can smash through enemies *Yet can't defeat ZERO...* she can perform a spinning attack using the hammer too.

BIG The Cat/Demon Gameplay: This is the worst part of the game... I'm not even joking I'm 100% serious. THIS GAMEPLAY IS FISHING THAT'S 100% ALL HE DOES FISH FOR HIS STUPID FROG! THIS WASTED SO MANY HOURS OF ME TRYING TO FISH FOR THE STUPID FROG IN MY CHILDHOOD!

E-102 GAMMA Gameplay: His gameplay is running through the level with a gun shooting enemies to gain more time, And at the end of every level is a boss battle waiting for you. This is short but fun and I love it.

Difficulty: This game is pretty easy *Including big if you know what you're doing.* From running through level completing boss battles. My problem with the difficulty is None of the bosses will prepare you for the Final Boss of the character. You think oh man this boss is going to be easy with my 40 lifes. *3 Hours later with only 1 life remaining* COME ON! COME ON! *Dies* NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

No other boss will prepare you for the Final Boss of the character.

???: Gameplay: This is pretty easy all you need to do is collect rings and stay at full speed to beat the *Blank*

Graphics/visuals: This game looks amazing for it's time, But not really for 2011 the character texture for NPC is off putting and the Cutscene version of Chao's look weird... Of course nothing is enough to stop you from enjoying this game!

Soundtrack/Sound Effects: THIS GAME IS THE HEAVEN OF OST. The opening to the Credit of each character is just perfect one of the thing that kept my childhood memories safe.

FINAL RATING: 9.99/10 BEAT IT TO THE VERY END *Even if it means going through Big levels...*
If only big never existed then I would have rated this game a 10 out of 10!
But all seriousness this game is a masterpiece and I see why many people enjoy it.
It's almost painful to play it after all these years, Not because of bad gameplay or anything. But because of how happy I was at that time. It's almost sadding to see where my life taken me. But I'm glad I had the chance to play this again after all these years.

COMPLETION BONUS: For getting all 130 Emblems you ♥♥♥♥♥tttttttttttttttttttttttttttttt! A BRAND NEW SKIN FOR SONIC! WOOOO YEYYYYYYY.
I'm not joking... You just get Metal Sonic with new sound effects. No new stories or levels...
SA2:Battles is more worth completing.

I looked up the completion bonus because god knows I don't have paitent to 100% this game.

Happy 25th Anniversary Sonic <3
Thanks for making my childhood even more great!

Many people reivewed this game talking about how this was a childhood favorite of theirs. My childhood, however, was largely a PS2-involved one, and any sonic games I did play were either the old 2D ones on the Mega Collection, or the ones on my older brother's old Genesis. Now years later (and after playing duds like Sonic and the Secret Rings) I finally get to play the game that forever changed Sonic the Hedgehog as we know him. After playing Sonic Adventure DX, I'm pleased to say that it is quite an enjoyable game, however, it definately shows its age in some spots.

-GAMEPLAY-
------------------------
The gameplay is interesting because each of the six main characters (Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy, Big, and Gamma) have their own campaign that once unlocked can be completed at the player's own pace. Having trouble finding emeralds as Knuckles? Play with Sonic for a bit and come back to the echidna later. Not feeling up for Big fishing? Go shoot things with Gamma and deal with him later.

Sonic, Tails, and Amy relatively have the same mission structure, and that is to run to the end of the stage quickly, only while sonic's stages follow that description to a T, Tails is more about racing a computer opponent through the level to prove he's faster, and Amy, armed with a hammer, is much slower, more focused on traditional platforming, and must also avoid an indestructible robot persuer. These stages are the traditional fare for the game, and are possibly my favorite stage types for the game (especially Sonic's levels.) Sonic's first few stages might have a type of "go straight to win" feeling to them, with Emerald Coast possibly being one of the easiest to glitch levels (at least without trying), but if you give the game more of a chance beyond the first two action stagees then you will find that there's some pretty neat platforming and speed in Sonic Adventure.

Knuckles, Gamma, and Big, are the most divergent of the game's campaigns. Knuckles' campaign involves finding three emerald shards to clear the stage. I'm not really too interested in these segments, but they're relatively interesting enough to keep a sense of variety in the game. Gamma the robot is mainly a shooting game. Defecting from Eggman, you go though Sonic's stages as your mission is to shoot down all the robots to free your fellow enslaved animals and keep up your timer, with a boss battle usually at the end of a stage. Out of all the gimmicky stages, I enjoyed Gamma's the most, as they provide a unique spin on the standard stages, and manage to retain the speed-oriented spirit of sonic. Big the Cat's much-groaned-over stages involve.... Fishing for some frog. These stages feel very odd and tacked on; the game definately could have lived without these levels, but don't worry; Big's campaign is the shortest. You can spread his levels out with the other characters.

What connects the action levels together is the field stage. You have three feilds to explore and each one is big and adds a nice exploration element to the game, something I wish the more streamlined later games would have kept. There's also lots of items for each character to collect to enhance their skills for more exploration, provding a nice sense of progression. Some may complain that it is easy to get lost, but as long as you refer to the glowing orb of light located in any area then you should be able to figure it out on your own.

-STORY-
-----------------
Before the 3D Sonic titles became known for their needlessly convoluted plotlines involving ancient prophecies and edgy rivals, Sonic Adventure 1 suprisingly stays relatively grounded under the surface and feels like the typical Sonic plot you'd expect. Eggman's trying to rule the world with the chaos emeralds again, only this time he's awakened the ancient diety Chaos, and is feeding it the emeralds to power it up. The game follows Sonic and the other protagonists on their various journeys to either stop Eggman or go on their own personal adventure. Each character has their own story arc that's simple enough to follow and doesn't get too melodramatic. The graphics and voice acting, however, give things a very campy feel, but if you enjoyed games such as the original Resident Evil for their good gameplay with cheesy, terrible voice acting, then you should find yourself enjoying SADX as much as you're laughing at how silly it gets. This game's story is not going to win any awards, but it at least doesn't try too hard to be something greater than it really is.

-PRESENTATION-
----------------------------
The music is very memorable and has plenty of great stage themes. The character themes with lyrics, however, are typical 90's SEGA cheese. You'll either hate them or find them to be a guilty pleasure. The level songs, however, feel very much like old school sonic tracks (some of them are even recycled from older games!), and fit nicely with the levels they're in.

The graphics are possibly my biggest complaint for this game. The game's visuals do not do it justice and have aged pretty badly. It gives the game a sort of unfinished feel and makes it seem almost like a joke at some points. Don't even get me started on the facial expressions of the characters. they're just hilarious. I feel the game's graphics and bugs are possibly what is most likely to detract people from this game the most, and what could cause people to prefer SA2 over SA1 (or older Sonic games over SA1&2 in general) Also for some reason this port doesn't come in widescreen. You always have this border around the screen at all times, which is quite annoying since SA2's pc port doesn't do this.

-OVERALL-
------------------------
I found Sonic Adventure to be very true to the spirit of the Sonic franchise. It plays very different from what you'd expect from a Sonic game (especially if you're used to the 2D games), but like Mario 64, playing signifficantly different from your 2D games actually works in its benefit, since SADX adapted for the 3D gaming environment, and while it isn't perfect, it managed to be an enjoyable game while staying true to the Sonic feel that also provides a variety of gameplay modes to keep things interesting. I almost wish sega tried improving upon the model laid by Sonic Adventure 1 and polished it to make more neat exploration/action hybrid Sonic titles. Heck, they don't need to have multiple characters; having a game where sonic himself explores fields for items and goes into action stages would be fine by me!

So basically, you'll like Sonic Adventure if:
-You like 3D platformers like Mario 64
-You like games with an exploration aspect
-You like games with cheesy voice acting
-You want games with multiple characters with different abilities and story paths that you can tackle at your own leisure
-You're open to try a Sonic game that tries to do something different.
-You're willing to give the game time and not judge the game based on its wonky first action stage
-You're willing to tolerate a few (thankfully short) fishing minigames.

You probably won't like Sonic Adventure if:
-You aren't really that much into platformers
-If you can't really stand a game that looks really funky graphic-wise
-If a few weird glitches deter you from enjoying the game
-You're looking for an amazing storyline

Overall I'd totally recommend this game!

Disclaimer: this wasn't part of my childhood, believe it or not. I played the demo years back, and that's it.

To be frank, I'm quite mixed on this one. It definitely shows its age.

Some good graphics for the early 2000's, but draw distance issues, even with the BetterSADX mod, hurts it. Don't think it won awards for looking very pretty back then, and it surely doesn't today. Character mouth flaps are uncanny, and they're anthro cartoon animals for crying out loud.

I'll give credit where it's due, the music is good for the most part. "Open your Heart" in particular rocks. The rest of the sound effects are quite lacking. Voice acting is grating and often annoying, and doesn't take into account other sound effects. "Get a load of this" anyone?

Gameplay is divided into 6 characters with gimmicks: Sonic is straight forward, "get to the goal fast", Tails is "get to the goal before the other loser, and fast", Knuckles is "get the three emerald shards, and fast", Amy is "run away from the big robot fast", Omega is "shoot up these losers fast", and Big is... "catch a frog, fast".

I hate Big.

The camera is ♥♥♥♥. It often gets stuck in walls and otherwise doesn't let you see where you're going. Controls are camera-relative and quite sensitive, leading to a slightly annoying bump in speedier sections and bouncing off walls or otherwise losing momentum. The hub worlds could really benefit from some form of map, hints in the environment about the path to take, and objectives. The biggest danger I've encountered in the Action stages weren't the enemies, but the cheap platforming and knockback from taking damage that throws me into a bottomless pit. This feels like the start of the polygon ceiling that's plagued the Sonic series for years, and still may linger.

The game is still playable with the keyboard, but it definitely seems to be designed for gamepads.

I hate Big.

And there's bugs. I didn't find them quite as charming as many others do.

It's fairly cheap still, but if you're not some diehard Sonic fan looking to complete your collection I advise you grab it on a sale. There's some genuinely good ideas here, if you look past the other issues.

I hate Big.

Sonic Adventure for Dreamcast was probably the first game where I was old enough to actually look forward to and get excited about its upcoming release. Unfortunately I couldn't afford to buy it or a Dreamcast, but decades later I can actually play the game properly without that weird cracked PC copy that looped the twinkle park theme for every level. I still vividly remember the excited feelings of inspiration from reading about the "open" world, and story told from 6 different playable perspectives. Even though the game is actually a confusing, glitchy mess, I still feel excited for everything it aspired to be. I still look for other companies to accomplish the game that SA aspired to be, but I keep coming back to SA.

I know that a review based on emotion and nostalgia doesn't help anyone else who's considering buying it, but Sonic Adventure is my jam.

One of my alltime favorite games.

The music, art style and story of this game are so charming

Pros:
- Story is lovely
- HUB world is great, I love hub worlds
- Music is awesome and fits the game perfect
- Gameplay is great, although it can feel somewhat buggy and glitchy on certain stages (especially while playing sonic)
- You can play Tails outside of his vehicles (unlike in SA2 :/)

Const:
- Like I said, the gameplay using Sonic can be a bit annoying / buggy on certain stages
- The levels / minigames Sky Chase / Sky Chase 2 are hard to play using the Keyboard

This game is very nostalgic in many ways for me. I can still remember when I played this game for the first time and I loved everything about it. It may not be good to today's standards, but at it's time, it was one of a kind!

When I was young, I remember one day I was playing with my lego, my dad came home with a gift for me. It was a disc version of Sonic Adventure DX. I had only played Sonic The Hedgehog on my Sega Mega Drive. I was so excited to play this I immediately installed it on our family computer. I had many fun hours playing this game. But on one cold raining day, I woke up ready to play some more, for I was almost finshed. But as I walked into the office, I saw the disc smashed to pieces on the floor. I ran to my dad in tears. We never found out how it broke. For many weeks I would cry myself to sleep. My dad tryed to find anothe copy. But ever time he went to the shops, it would end in failure. Many years passed and I now play other games to hide my sadness. But as I'm browsing the steam store, I see a game called "Sonic Adventure DX" It was like Jesus himself kissed me on the face. I then bought the game and my childhood was brought back from the dead. This game was my childhood and when it broke, it took my childhood. I feel like a happy little boy again.
