When I was young, I remember one day I was playing with my lego, my dad came home with a gift for me. It was a disc version of Sonic Adventure DX. I had only played Sonic The Hedgehog on my Sega Mega Drive. I was so excited to play this I immediately installed it on our family computer. I had many fun hours playing this game. But on one cold raining day, I woke up ready to play some more, for I was almost finshed. But as I walked into the office, I saw the disc smashed to pieces on the floor. I ran to my dad in tears. We never found out how it broke. For many weeks I would cry myself to sleep. My dad tryed to find anothe copy. But ever time he went to the shops, it would end in failure. Many years passed and I now play other games to hide my sadness. But as I'm browsing the steam store, I see a game called "Sonic Adventure DX" It was like Jesus himself kissed me on the face. I then bought the game and my childhood was brought back from the dead. This game was my childhood and when it broke, it took my childhood. I feel like a happy little boy again.

If you played the original release of this game when it was first published on Steam, you noticed that the game in higher resolutions were a square in the center of the screen. However Sega has fixed these issues with a patch update and the game looks better in the new 4x3 aspect ration in higher res compared to the original edition. Still you will want to have an XBOX 360 controller to play this game as I've tried to switch my Logitech F310 Gamepad from XBOX 360 Mode to Logitech Dual Action Mode to see what would happen and it was not a fun experience to say the least.

As far as the "DX" label, I don't agree with it since Sonic Adventure DX was originally a Gamecube game and it was ported to PC before the Sega Dreamcast Collection existed. This version lacks a lot of content that was found in DX, including the unlockable Game Gear games that made playing Sonic Adventure DX on the Gamecube a worth while sit down game. At least the frame rate is more steady in this version of the game compared to the PC port however graphically speaking, the system requirements seem a bit much for porting over an XBOX 360 game to the PC.

If you are a pure Sonic fan and you have to have this game, its a must own for any Sonic Fan, but if you are looking for port perfection, this game lack in that department a little more then you think.....

Overall rating (Neutral, minus the camera nuisances the overall game presents in some areas.)

Has not changed since the original aside from slight graphical updates made every once in a great while to fix some buggy errors. Still gives me headahces like I remember due to wonky camera.

The story is nice and introduces Chaos and chaos. It also introduces Chaos chaos which are really difficult to get (and in SA2 is expanded to 3 different Chaos chao, one for each alignment.)

This game introduced a new character or two along with giving voices to all those who had previously had no voice (save for Sonic and Eggman who would speak on occassion in SEGA Sonic the Hedgehog (arcade game).) It also introduced Homing Attack paths which are usually useful for getting in shortcuts or starting an expert path to the finish.

I still love Tails story due to how broken he is as a character (being able to fly straight to the finish in under one minute in almost all stages aside from Speed Highway) and I still despise Big's story due to how out of place it is along with just being seemingly annoying to me (I love cats, but Big can be a bit annoying at times.) Every other character is alright.

The soundtrack got a dandy new sound to it thanks to Jun Senoue (aka the guy who also created Crush40 :) .) Also, pretty neat that the guy voiced Parappa the Rapper does Knuckle's theme song which is pretty kicking here.

Overall, I don't mind a slight headahce every time I play due to the camera angle, game is bad to polygon ceiling but fun to play every now and then.

One of the best Sonic Games of all time. I played this when the Dreamcast originally was released here in the United Kingdom and was the first game I ever owned for it. I immersed myself within the game immediately, playing it all day, everyday and whenever I could. When I couldn't? I played it in my mind until I could be reunited with it.

Even after all these years, going back to this game has blessed me with the realisation of how enjoyable it was and still is. The game is simple and fast to beat, but everything else a long side the main missions is what makes it a truly epic game. If you truly love playing this game, everything you once knew comes back to you instantly, I don't think there was anything I had forgotten about this game, and there are not many games that give you that experience, proving how enjoyable and entertaining it is.

The soundtrack is the most memorable part of the game and is by far one of the best sound tracks of any game every released in my opinion. If you haven't heard of CRUSH 40 go give them a listen, however I reckon most Sonic fans know who they are and how amazing their work is. Sure there are some bugs here and there that were in the Dreamcast and Gamecube versions but it's a small price for how nostalgic and great this game is and was for it's time.

All characters have good and cross-weaving storylines that inevitably come together at the end to defeat the 'Ultimate Evil', ignorantly created by the infamous Dr.Eggman.

On the side there is cart racing, and the amazing Chao gardens. Chao are little baby creatures that live peacefully with humans and can morph and gain stats in strength, run, flight etc...and can then be put into Chao races. Once you've completed the game and done what you can, you'll probably find yourself here a lot, as the Chao are just literally the best god damn things ever.

If you haven't played Sonic Adventure/SADX, then I suggest you should. It is by far one of the best games of the Sonic Franchise.

Sonic Adventure is a game that I loved as a kid, but this version is just terrible.

First of all this seems like it's almost an emulated version of the Dreamcast version and not the DX version, which was on Gamecube. The textures and camera control are actually worse than the Gamecube version. While you can set the resolution to 16:9 it will still only be 4:3, but with borders (The recent update removed the borders on the top and bottom, so that was nice atleast.).

The more I play the game the more I realize just how broken it is. For example, in mission mode don't expect to be able to read what the mission wants you to do in the mission menu. You want to get a high score on the flying minigame, you need to actually lower your resolution as the crosshair doesn't scale and the lower your resolution the more likely you are to lock onto everything on the screen. The camera has always been wonky, but it feels almost unbearable in this. I'm also not sure on how new this is, but holy hell there are invisible walls everywhere.

If you truly want to go play this game on PC get the Gamecube version and run that through Dolphin and use the Dolphin mods to make it look better, atleast that will give you proper widescreen support.

EDIT: I just remembered that the Gamecube version had the ability to unlock a number of Game Gear games, this is removed from this version as well.

A while back I would have told you to avoid this game. Yes it's buggy, but it's still a Dreamcast Classic and it's been made better by recent updates. Finally we have support for HD resolutions, Anti-Aliasing and V-Sync which make the thing playable, plus Achievements which is a nice bonus. I'll admit I thought that SEGA had forgotten about this game, but the fact that they're finally improving it after four years is quite redeeming. Still a bloody long time to wait though.

Maybe one day we'll get Widescreen support...

Let's first talk about how I recommended Sonic Adventure. I can recommend this game to anyone who is forgiving, nostalgic and a Sonic fan. Those people will love it. You have to forgive clunky controls, bad camera angles and cringe worthy dialogue for those good moments. "Open Your Heart" playing as you speed across the ruins of Station Square as Super Sonic. That moment on the Twinke Cart minigame when you realize the music is kind of a remix of "It Doesn't Matter"...

I'll never say this game is for everyone. It isn't. For me, it has always been one of my top games. It got me through Junior High and High School. If I was ever feeling down, "Open Your Heart" was there to pick me back up. I love this game. Call me biased if you want. I call me a Sonic fan.

Graphics: For the time, on the Dreamcast, they were excellent. Though, by the time it became "DX" and hit Gamecube, a tad dated.

Controls: Do-able. But not much better.

Audio: Stage music is generally awesome, and fitting. Character themes are... Dorky at times. Voice acting is a little silly.

Replayability: Not much. Mission mode is kind of bad. I enjoy going through story over and over, but that may not be for everyone.

For everyone: Probably a 6/10. It's not for everyone and most will probably find it frustrating.
For me: 10/10. I love this game and all it's flaws.

I had a good time on this game. Sonic Adventure DX is the 2003 version of Sonic Adventure (1999 on Dreamcast). This game proposes a new you look for almost all the characters, the current look for the Sonic Universe characters. Soundtracks are very good once again, the graphism are colorful without being so childish and the storyline is amazing. However, the gameplay is really hard to explain. You will have to play as the 6 game main characters which you will follow their stories, you have Sonic for Speed acts, Tails for the Race against an opponent , Knuckles for the Treasure Hunting acts, Amy for the Escape acts, Gamma E-102 for the Demoliton Time Trail acts and Big for [Huge drumbeats intensifies]....Fishing acts.
͠° ͟ʖ ͡°

The world is composed of two parts for each characters ; the acts and the open world which you can have acces to the Chao World and hug your tiny adorable Chao you proudly named Ronald Reagan. In this game, you also have a big load of mission and secondary objectives like the fact you can reach every emblem in the game and obtain a very special additional character. The new archivement are OK in terms of difficulty. The game is also not that hard but you could experience some disagreements with the camera.

→ 72/100

The narrative isn't nearly as good as I remember and it's a lot easier than I remember. Why did I download this game aga--AMY!!!!!!!!!!!!!! *0*

Aside from all the Amy and Tikal pics I took due to my fandom, I thought to give this game another try, regretting never 100%'d it before. Also decided to give Chaos a chance....I actually ended up liking the Chaos.....and it only took me 13 years to finally get used to them.

The level designs are nice and it's still pretty fun. Though you'll occassionally clip through a wall or suddenly bounce off a wall you should be running on.

It's pretty good, but not as good as I remembered. Still recommended for the nostalgia factor.

This is a game I have a history with. As a Kid I loved it. As a "Cynical Teen" I believed "It didn't hold up very well when I replayed it because the game isn't as good." Then I just basically decided to shut the heck up and rate it based on how fun it is now and not how it was or how it will be.

Gameplay:
This introduced the 3D gameplay of Sonic so you can expect it to be a bit buggy. And yes. It's a bit buggy sometimes but you know it was Sega's first attempt so you can forgive them slightly. There's 6 characters and they all play differently so i'll be rating their gameplays seperately.

Sonic: He plays just like you'd think he would. He has the spin dash and the jump like in the genesis days, but in this game he got a few new powers. He can home into an enemy by jumping twice (Akin to the Flame Shield in Sonic 3) he also has the light speed dash and attack where he can dash through a set of rings and later enemies.

His stages are action packed get to the End. (also if you replay stages a second person can play as Tails like in Sonic 2/3 ^_^. It doesn't help much but it's a nice touch). Almost perfect gameplay. I'm not saying perfect as there's room to improve.
9/10

Tails: He's like Sonic except he doesn't get the Homing Attack or the Light Speed Dash/Attack, but he can fly instead and hit robots with his tails.

Tails' stages are races against Sonic (typically) and you can beat Sonic because there are shortcuts placed that Sonic can't get to. My only gripes with this are.
1. Sonic rubberbands. (meaning the farther you are ahead the faster he goes. he even teleports sometimes.)
2. They are shorter versions of Sonic's stages.

I give it an 8/10

Knuckles: Knuckles plays completley differently. He retains his glide and climb abilties but gains the ability to dig and punch,
His gameplay is spent searching for the emerald shards. There are 3 in every level and you have to find them all.
This version of treasure hunting is REALLY fun. (SA2 ruins it a bit).

I give it an 8/10

Amy: Now this is Amy's first time being playable in the main series.(and the last that I know of until Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric :C poor amy).
She plays differently to the other characters in that she hits enemies with her hammer and runs away from a badnik named Zero the whole time. (No I don't find this "sexist" because Amy actually fuels the plot and her being kidnapped isn't because "Shes a dainty girl" it's because she fuels the plot.)
Amy gets a small amount of stages so it doesn't drag on too long.

I give her a 7/10

E-102 Gamma:
He pl-... HEY GET OUT OF MY PC! "HES A ROBOT ZOMG HE DOESN'T PLAY LIKE SONIC 0/10 SUX"... anyways yes he doesn't play like any other sonic character to date but IT'S NOT BAD! It's a fun gameplay style and it's different. (I'll go over why I love gamma more in the story section) He shoots enemies to gain time because THE TIMER COUNTS DOWN AND NOT UP! And if it gets to 0 you will die. He plays through missions.
I give him an 8/10

Big:
I don't hate Big. I think his gameplay is out of place but I don't hate him. He fishes. Thats all I have to say.

6/10 (for being out of place.)

Gameplay total: 7.5/10

Story:
Each character has a different story but I'll lump a few sets together because they are related.

Sonic/Tails: They have a story about fighting [s]Dr. Robotnik[/s] Dr. Eggman and they usually stay together.

Knuckles: He's usually on his own finding the emerald shards. Dr. Eggman managed to trick him again.

Amy/E-102 Gamma: Not gonna spoil it but they have an interaction that is great.

Big: He's usually on his own fishing and trying to find his frog Froggy but he finds a few other people along the way.

Rating: 8/10 (if Gamma's story wasn't here it would be an 7/10)

Music:
9/10. Just listen to this soundtrack on Youtube.

Final Score:
8/10 - Great Game I recommend it a lot.

I think as far as Sonic in 3D goes, the first Sonic Adventure got a lot of things right that games after it failed to grasp -- yes, even in the presence of 4 fishing stages. If you've come to think of Sonic in 3D as running quikcly across narrow paths crossing the abyss, you should at least go back over this game. Levels in this game have more variety in their structure, such as Ice Cap's death-pit-free climb through a circular cave, or the almost Mario 64-like ascent up the Pleasure Castle of Twinkle Park. Part of the reason the levels work as well as they do is that every character has a slightly different way to play. For example: Knuckles' stages are all more open-ended and tend toward larger open spaces, while Tails' stages tend to be more straightforward runs of the faster segments' in Sonic's game. While people who are fans of Sonic mainly from Sonic 3 [& Knuckles] might find these changes in gameplay disappointing, I think they help keep the levels fresh. Since Sonic himself goes through nearly every stage and area on his own (including most of the open areas of Knuckles' game!), it makes completionism a bit less of a grind (although the less said about Big's missions, the better).

That all said, the camera is pretty bad, even now -- and it's probably the reason that the 3D Sonic games after this one tended toward less ambitious level design. This last playthrough I noticed an astounding amount of clipping; I assume this is an issue with the updated version, since while previous versions of the game (i.e., the Dreamcast or 2004 PC versions) didn't have this issue. This is still probably the definitive version of the game. Most of the important graphical effects are here, it runs at a stable 60 FPS on a modern gaming laptop, switching focus doesn't kill the game, and it can run at high-definition resolutions (in a forced 4:3 ratio, admittedly -- but the previous PC release only supported widescreen by cutting off the top and bottom of the screen). The game was rushed a bit to get it out in 1998 before Christmas so the Dreamcast had a killer app, and all versions of the game since (including the bugfixed Dreamcast releases put out for other regions, called the "International Edition" in Japan) have struggled to get a stable game out of it, and even in this recently-patched version many well-documented bugs are still hanging around. On the other hand, it's still probably a more stable game than Donkey Kong 64 -- and supports a wider variety of play interests than "wander around a big map collecting stuff".

Another minor frustration is the lack of cutscenes. While for Sonic's story that doesn't matter much (Sonic's story is defined mostly by the characters around him and he doesn't really develop as a character during it), the other characters all get to be a bit more complex and actually develop as indivduals over the course of the game. Gamma's quest of self-awareness, for example, has a surprisingly tragic end to it for a game about a fast talking blue hedgehog; it's not on the level of a game like Super Mario Galaxy, but it definitely had a lot of thought and heart put into it.

That's basically my summary of the game -- an ambitious but flawed game that definitely had heart in it, before sequel fatigue and shrinking budgets caused the level design to be formulaic and a bit on the bland side. If I were to recommend a 3D Sonic game other than Generations, this would be it.

You'd still do well to check out the Dreamcast release, however, as a few flashy graphical effects courtesy of the console's hardware shading never made it into any of the ports -- Sky Deck in particular has far more dramatic and foreboding lighting and shadows, looking a bit dead in comparison in the DX version. A shame, but these effects are rarely enough to spoil the game; the stable framerate and generally much nicer-looking textures more than make up for it most of the time. (And I suppose a patch to get the proper graphical effect in Sky Deck is not out of the question.)

Wonderfully awful. Well worth the price for some of the worst voice acting & least-sensical plot in gaming history - & this was considered game of the year material when it released! My how far we've come in the last decade. It ends up being strangely addicting.
10/10, would clip through scenery and fall to my death randomly again.
