Pros
+ Excellent story and progression
+ Likeable characters and companions
+ Interesting lore
+ Immersive soundtrack
+ Acceptable graphics for a 10+ year old game
+ Moderate customizability for character classes
+ Morality/karma system adds some personality

Cons
- Too few locations/towns to visit
- Cumbersome and frustrating combat (in my opinion)
- Companions are often useless in combat
- Some areas of the game can feel repetitive or boring

Notes
1. Gameplay is reminiscent of other Bioware titles such as KoTOR and Dragon Age: Origins with added innovation
2. Character appearance is selected at the start and cannot be modified or customized in any way
3. While using spells requires "mana" as one would expect, using weapons also requires a kind of energy which drains with use

Highlights

+* Fun, memorable characters
+* Great, rich story with a decent twist
+* Plenty of ways to build a character

Positives

+ Engaging combat
+ Nice choice system

Negatives

- Limited character stats ( only health, chi & focus )
- Some ardous, cheap fights ( elephant demons and demons in general )
- Could of been more locations to visit
- Followers seemed a little underwhelming in a fight

Concerns

-* I encountered a few glitches like the camera constantly facing downwards towards the ground which was luckily enough rectified by loading the save file again.

-* As much as I loved the paralysing palm technique, it was quite overpowered as you could essentially stun lock your enemies.

Consensus

Jade Empire is a classic example of how Bioware crafts a story driven game with memorable characters that accompany you along the way. Despite the downsides, I thoroughly enjoyed Jade Empire and it was a pleasure to witness Bioware trying something fresh, I mean how many Western RPG developers have made a game that is centred in Asia?

7/10

This is by far one of my favourite games, up there with Orcarina of Time and Halo: Combat Evolved. Armed with a fantastic storyline that keeps you hooked till the end and awesome gameplay, this is a must have for RPG lovers.

HOWEVER

This game is way too broken on steam. So much so that even if you can make it work, there are multiple points in the game that break and render it unplayable. Unless you can fix it yourself, buy it on console instead.

Game doesn't work out of the box on modern Windows versions and needs some tinkering to run (I hope you like ini-files or changing things in the Registry). Thus this doesn't get a recommendation. The game itsself is great and certainly worth the hassle. But it should still be fixed by Valve or whoever is responsible for this.

I want to reccomend this game so bad, because it's so great and deserves to be [;ayed, but with the steam version being virtually unplayable without modifying your game files and dealing with the inner workings of your computer's file systems, and some people just don't want to go through all that trouble. From what I hear, the GOG version doesn't have these problems, so if you want this game go try there. Pros: -Great atmosphere -Excellent combat -New environment and setting relatively untouched in the modern big budget releases.

This is hands down the single best game Bioware has ever made. Even above Mass Effect 1 for me. My only regret for it is that Bioware did not move development over to the Xbox 360 during development (which was on the table,) since it was lost in the shuffle from one generation to the other.

That aside, this game is just a joy to play. It being an action RPG, especially after all those years of more turn based, segmented fare from their studio, was such a joy to experience when I first played it. The fighting system is varied, there are several avenues to suceed, all of them entertaining. It is for this reason that, though the system can be abused, it just adds to the charm. In every moment, in every piece of it, you can see a real love for this property. It being Bioware's first in house IP is a large part of that, but it is also the source material. It turns out that the folks over at Bioware are big Wuxia fans, and if you aren't by the end of this game, you may not have a heart.

My favorite element of the game though, is the morality system (though I will admit it is more of a de jure love than de facto.) Where in Knights of the Old Republic you have Dark Side and Light Side choices, in Jade Empire, you have the Way of the Open Palm and the Way of the Closed Fist. The best way to describe the difference is for me to say that one is a personal choice, but the other is a personal philosophy - either path can be misrepresented, and there are no right answers. At least, in theory. In practice, having come right off of Kotor, and being originally for the OG Xbox, concessions had to be made. As it is practiced by the player, it too often comes across as little more than the Dark/Light Side heavy handed choices. This just serves to make those occasions where it does work extra special, and they really shine. I don't know whether it was a hardware or design limitation. If Bioware ever does make a Jade Empire 2 which could realize the system as it is described is as exciting an idea as I can imagine.

Alas, it was lost in the shuffle for better hardware, and though it is made by one of the most famous developers in the business right after one of their biggest hits and right before their biggest hit, there are seemingly few who have played or even heard of Jade Empire. That is the biggest shame of all. I exhort all who are on the fence to buy this game immediately (also, play with a gamepad. It works brilliantly.) You won't be sorry.

I've played the Mass Effects and KOTOR, but Jade Empire is still my favorite Bioware game. You can play it over and over again, finding things you've missed and making different choices to yourself and the world around you. It's mythology, characters, and world make Jade Empire unlike any other action RPG I've played before.

Whilst there appear to be issues with the config utility and a few tweaks needed to run the game itself under Windows 10 64bit (namely creating an empty SystemInformation.xml file and adding Steam to the environment Path: variable), the game is fine once up and running and is the same Jade Empire that we know and love.

A rich world coupled with a decent storyline (even if it is a little trite in places) makes this martial art centred RPG one to grab ahold of, not only for nostalgia but also because it's a great game to play through.

The game itself is brilliant, unfortunately, Valve is distributing it in a broken, unplayable state for most windows Vista/7/8 users. This requires users to hack the install directory by renaming files, or to seek to resolve the problem by more convoluted and risky means.

It is of course BioWare's responsibility to fix this, but Valve is still selling it, and it's unacceptable that people feel the need to download anonymous executables off the internet in order to play a game they purchased.

If you feel like dealing with the head ache of trying to get this broken product to work, it's actually a very good game. It starts a little slow but you encounter lots of interesting characters, make lots of decisions that impact how things turn out, develop relationships with party members, get multiple endings, and can unlock a lot of cool powers. It's a very good game, it's like a pre-cursor to Mass Effect but JadeEmpireConfig.exe is broken and results in a Can't Find Steam error.

Oh the solution to the Can't Find Steam error? Simple

Make a backup of JadeEmpireLauncher.exe, create a copy of JadeEmpire.exe, and rename that copy to JadeEmpireLauncher.exe. Then run it in XP Compatibility Mode with Run as Administrator checked. For most people, this solves the problem. I'm sorry you had to look for a work around like this to make a game you spent money on playable.

Steam Version == BROKEN

I cannot recommend the Steam version in its current state, simply because it's broken (i.e. "non-working") beyond belief. This seems to not only be because of a "we don't care" attitude on Bioware's part, but also on Valve/Steam parts for letting things into the Steam shop that obviously haven't been QA'd AT ALL. This basically forces users to "jumping through hoops" like resorting to running Steam as Administrator, "registry hacking", manipulating broken config game files, renaming game executables and so on, without any guarantee that the game will run in the end anyway. Most of the problems are well-known (i.e. mentioned numerous times on forums here at Steam and Bioware), but there seem to be neither official solutions nor statements nor any signs of pressure from Steam towards Bioware to fix it.

* "Can't Find Steam error" : The most blatant proof that Steam didn't QA the Steam Version. The initial setup will throw this error message at your face unless you start the STEAM CLIENT itself in Administrator Mode (!). As the game requires admin privileges, and Interprocess Communcation between game and steam (with Steam_api.dll for Overlay / DRM) requires both executables to have admin privileges. Basic programming mistake on Biowares part? Non-existing QA on Steam's part?
* Verify integrity of the game cache throws you into a loop: Got "2 files failed and will be reaquired" every time you try from the steam client? In this case: Good luck. (Steam's fault)
* Crashing Game Configuration Dialog: The game configuration laucher crashes while trying to discover your hardware? You're out of luck unless you start renaming files / editing the registry / create a valid xml config file. (Bioware's fault)
* Dead-locking game right at the beginning: You only get the initial loading screen where you only see a background image? Afaik, there is no known solution to this problem at this time. (Bioware's fault)

There are speculations that the last 2 points might be caused by the "Optimus" technology from NVidia (modern Laptops with dedicated graphics cards have 2 cards: One integrated HDxxxx Intel version inside your CPU and one dedicated NVidia / ATI card). If that were true, it would mean that most laptops with dedicated graphic hardware (from NVidia) won't run this game at all. This is only *speculation* though.

TL;DR version: DON'T BUY! Unless Valve / Steam starts putting serious pressure towards Bioware to fix the plethora of issues nothing will be done, and the version offered in the shop will remain broken.

I enjoyed this game when I played it on the original Xbox and grabbed this off a Steam Sale. However, this port seems to be broken. I can't launch the game and going to the forums just shows that I am in the company of hundreds of others who also can't launch the game.

The game is good, but the port is broken. Stay away or press your luck, you may be buying a broken game!

Waste of money. I've played this game in the past and it's a great game. The game is not the problem, getting it to run is. The host of known problems with the Steam version continues to grow. First you will be greeted by the "Failed to find Steam" error. This can be corrected by running both the Steam app and the Jade Empire game as administrator. Once you get past that you will be greeted by the configuration screen which will crash while trying to detect your hardware. I hear the only fix for this is changing the registry but I could be wrong.

If you manage to get past these errors (and a few brave and knowlegable souls have) You will likely run into the game crashing on you upon launch. In short this is not a game so much as a program designed to crash your computer. I hear there are patches you can download from various sites but you risk downloading viruses too. Make a mistake trying to change the registry yourself and you just might end up reformatting your hard drive. It's far less painful to just stay away from this POS that will fight you at every turn as you try to get it to launch. Sometimes it will even mock you by making you think it's about to run only to crash and laugh in your face. Stay away!
