Splash N' Grab Now Over - The Final Tally

So here we are, at the wrap-up time of Decksplash’s Free Week experiment. It has been quite a nail-biting ride for the team, watching numbers climbing, players having fun, maths, wagers and predictions around the studio done. In the end, we fell short of the 100,000 players we set ourselves as a goal.

It’s not all tears, though… The Free Week proved what we suspected at the start: Decksplash is a good game, evidenced by its 79-86 Steam score throughout the week. The players who experienced the game liked it, but in the end there just wasn’t enough of them to guarantee a healthy online community and keep the game’s matchmaking alive for the long run.

The lesson to take home is that, though not the best, this outcome is a good one for everyone involved: its players won’t spend money on a game that
won’t survive the long haul, the team can move on to a new Bossa project with a sense of closure having done their best with Decksplash, and we tried a new way of validating a multiplayer game. Should we have cancelled the game without this experiment, a ‘what if’ would always be there in the back of our minds.

All in all, we create hundreds of games every year during our monthly game jams, the vast majority of them failing to even being shown to the players. Decksplash just went further than the rest before teaching us a thing or two, enabling us to go forth with yet another piece of the creative puzzle we put together every day

So from all of us here in the Decksplash team, Thank you for your support and we’ll see you on our next big adventure!

Love Decksplash.

About This Game

Decksplash unfortunately didn’t hit it’s target and production on the game will now stop.
We always knew that 100k was a big target, but it was the only way to make sure the game was a viable product for both yourselves and us in the long term, now we’ve gotten our answer.
We want to thank everyone who supported us during the Free Week and let you all know that while this is the end of our story, we’re glad we got to share it with you.
The team working on Decksplash will now move onto other projects, taking the knowledge gained from the past year to build an even better game.
At Bossa Studios we believe the best way to make games is to fail fast and move on to bigger, better things rather than sinking time into a project without a bright future.
So from all of us here in the Decksplash team, Thank you for your support and we’ll see you on our next big adventure!

Love Decksplash.

What’s Decksplash?

Flaunt your deck control and gain the respect of your squad by building monster combos and dropping them hard on the rookies opposing your team. Your innate mastering of the trick system will allow you and your team control of the arenas and ultimately the game!

Why a Free Week?

Like any proud parent, we love Decksplash, but unlike deluded creators, we want to believe that you love it too. Thus we’ve devised a ‘first of its kind’ experiment: The Splash N’ Grab! We’re releasing the game free for a week AND if 100K people download, play, and have fun, we’ll instantly launch the game at the end of the free week. If not… RIP Decksplash.

Decksplash is a multiplayer online game: if all goes well, its launch day is the start of its journey, not the end. We've got a backlog and wishlist as long as our arms, and it's precisely why we are doing this -- we've got to find out if we are correct in committing the team to the game for years to come. Say we take the game to Early Access and a few players back it with their money, but not enough to justify its continued development. What happens to those players? Due to being multiplayer, Decksplash can only be played if there are a minimum amount of people online to play with, unlike a single-player experience we could wrap and walk away from, having satisfied those few who bought it. It just wouldn't work for this type of game.

The game’s future is in YOUR hands. We hope you have fun being a part of gaming history! (However it turns out -- fingers crossed...)

Splash N’ Grab?

It’s simple:
