Reviews

“I completed the level and was reduced to disturbingly orgasmic cries. I haven’t felt as good with a videogame, in that direct physical way, for quite a while.”
Kieron Gillen, Rock, Paper, Shotgun
“I can't say enough good things about VVVVVV. It's Terry Cavanagh's best game to date, and one of the best platformers I've ever played. If you have any interest in challenging platformers whatsoever, you'd be doing yourself a disservice not to pick up VVVVVV.”
10/10 – Anthony Burch, Destructoid
“...it would be wrong to let the sheer fiendishness of Cavanagh’s offering overwhelm any appreciation of the ceaseless elegance of the design.”
8/10 – EDGE

I got stuck halfway through and had my brother complete the game for me. As I am getting older, I find that these fast, twitchy games are extremely hard to play for me. It is definitely fun though. The music rocks and the graphics and story are retro cool.

VVVVVV is a very intense platforming experience. It is overall not too long of an experience (I completed in about 4h30min or so) but its difficulty makes it feel much longer than that. Likewise, the game map is small, but the difficulty of the game makes sure you don't see all of it too quickly. You can move left or right. There is no jump; only an invert gravity mechanic which changes whether your character falls toward the floor or the ceiling. The inversion is only possible if you're on a surface, so no changes mid fall. You can shift left/right direction while falling. To progress through the game you move screen to screen; you have to find a certain number of individuals (some requiring escort back to a safe space), and along the way there is a single type of optional collectable which opens up music tracks the more of them you collect. Along the way you have to avoid obstacles, mainly spikes and moving entities. One touch and you die, but the sections of map you explore are littered with respawn points that act on a last touched basis. Remember to touch them because you will die a lot! To lose progress hard won is frustrating.

There are teleporters around the world map which - once discovered - can be used to teleport to any other teleporter already discovered. There are particular sections of the world map labelled with particular colours; each colour indicates a different environmental mechanic for that section that makes traversing that section unique in some way (for example a continuously scrolling screen with which you have to keep up or perish, or a screen that folds back on itself at the ends, making the top flow into the bottom and left into right and vice versa).

I personally found the platforming quite challenging. It was an immense relief once I cleared a screen or series of screens and hit a respawn point, so that I could take a breather. There is something I personally had a problem with and it might have everything to do wth my lack of skill; there seems to be a tiny bit of inertia that causes the character to carry on moving just a fraction of a second longer past the point that you stopped pressing the d-pad/joystick, which resulted in me always hitting spikes/falling off platforms I thought I'd not hit or fall off from. This makes getting all the collectibles almost impossible for me. Those GODAWFUL SPIKES!

I highly recommend this game for those who enjoy twitch-reaction/motor-memory platforming. For those who do not enjoy quick, precision platforming it would just be an awful frustration.

A ton of fun whose appearance is referenced by the Commodore 64/ Atari 2600 era, VVVVVV uses a new form of gameplay under the concept of 'flipping' the gravity that your character uses, in order to explore the current dimension that you live in, as well as saving your crewmates.

If the main game doesn't tickle your fancy, there's also a moderately-sized list of player levels made by other indie developers, such as the infamous Notch. The list is arranged by difficulty, and each level provides a different plot that changes the perspective of the main character and the atmosphere in general.

also, if you are lazy, there's an option to pay to unlock everything, but you wouldn't do that, right?

If you deem yourself fit to play this game, despite the intrepid difficulty made in this game, consider purchasing this game.

If not, then try this game either way. It allows you to ' git gud .'

Died over a hundred times doing things the hard way. Got over a thousand deaths, but the satisfaction of getting all the trinkets on the first go around is amazing. Also love the PPPPPP

Disregard everybody saying this takes 2-4 hours to beat. I did it in less than an hour in my first playthrough, and slowly cut time from there. There are 20 trinkets to collect and if you do that it will take longer, but most of them aren't too out of the way. There are two trinkets that together will take twice as long as it did to beat the game. It's worth it though. You may rage some but the game flows smoothly and constantly, so you can die 15 times in the span of a minute and still feel like you're making progress. Going by the achievement statistics, less than 10% of players managed to beat this game, which is in part a testification to its difficulty but honestly I think it's mostly that this is not everyone's game. If you like platformers, it doesn't get much better than this, but if you prefer 3D games that focus more on storyline than gameplay (nothing wrong with that), then you could pick a better game to start playing 2D again. Note: there are at times a lot of moving colors onscreen, but it's generally monochromatic - if you have epilepsy and are the photosensitive type you should be careful with this purchase, but know that it's not that bad and probably won't do anything (it's nothing at all like Super Hexagon).

tl;dr If you're bad at 2D platformers and want to get better, buy this game but be ready to rage. If you like platformers, this game is amazing.
