Reviews

“I completed the level and was reduced to disturbingly orgasmic cries. I haven’t felt as good with a videogame, in that direct physical way, for quite a while.”
Kieron Gillen, Rock, Paper, Shotgun
“I can't say enough good things about VVVVVV. It's Terry Cavanagh's best game to date, and one of the best platformers I've ever played. If you have any interest in challenging platformers whatsoever, you'd be doing yourself a disservice not to pick up VVVVVV.”
10/10 – Anthony Burch, Destructoid
“...it would be wrong to let the sheer fiendishness of Cavanagh’s offering overwhelm any appreciation of the ceaseless elegance of the design.”
8/10 – EDGE

I got this game because its made by the same guy who made super hexagon. This game has amazing music and an interesting concept but can be sort of annoying at some levels. would reccomend on a sale.

A creative platformer that has a nice gravity gimmick, adding depth to the game. I do feel the game at times is a little poorly coded, as it can sometimes crash for no apparent reason. Perhaps the developer could remake the game in another engine at some point, make Super VVVVV? I dunno, but I would buy it.

I don't get the game. When do I win? Why are achievements broken?

1. The gimmick here is that you switch gravity instead of jumping. It works well enough it doesn't feel like a gimmick at all.

2. The soundtrack to this game is sold as an album called PPPPPP by SoulEye and you should buy it because it's awesome.

3. This is tough enough that it will reveal any weakness of the d-pad on your controller. I used a 360 controller because it was handy. When faced w/ the choice between sloppy analog stick control and its hideous sharp-edged d-pad, I had a great notion to jump in a river and drown.

4. Just beating the game is not that hard. There are a few difficulty spikes for sure but the game is not long enough to start to really feel grueling difficulty-wise, which is just fine by me.

5. Getting 100% is another story entirely.

6. I kind of wish the graphics were even more basic. This looks way better than a 2600 game and doesn't have to.

7. Some areas have a puzzling element to them but this is really all about quick reflexes.

8. The pacing on this is really what makes it stand out. There are some sections that are really tough and some you might even call cheap but it always feels more fun that frustrating because you get to restart from a checkpoint instantaneously after failing. There was one particular part I died 172 times on and at no point did I want to murder the developers.

9. 172 times!

10. This game is supposed to be funny.

11. There is actually some kind of story going on but it is more of a footnote than anything. You are on a ship in a dimension where pressing the jump button makes gravity reverse. Things go awry because if they didn't, you wouldn't have to save the crewmembers of your ship and there'd be no game.

12. The title of this game stems from the fact all of said crewmembers names start w/ V.

13. If you are a fan of platformers and like this VVVVVV's retro style, I just don't see that you can ask for much more than VVVVVV delivers.

This was honestly one of the best platformers I have ever played, it's challenging, the music is great and the story is fairly simple to understand. Overall, it was fun to play.

Quite hard, but very fun. The soundtrack and artstyle make up for a great atmosphere in which is a mechanics-focused game otherwise. There is a story, for sure, but the game is mostly just the 'do'-part of gaming, rather than following a story closely. Some puzzels can be tedious though.
Definitely worth the money.

Amazing 8-bit platformer, i've spent countless hours playing it back in old days, then i decided to buy it on steam (you know that happence >____> ) to support the dev. So i dont have hours and achievements on steam:

+OST: Amazing ost, have it in my winamp playlist for a long time now :)
+Visuals: Simple but nice pixelated graphics
+Controls: Only 3 buttons controls < > and gravity change, pretty solid and trustable, which is important for a platformer game.
+Gameplay: Game itself pretty interesting to beat, not too long, not too short, but the main problem is trophy room - you have ingame achievements as well as steam achievements, but they are so damn hard, its like very close to impossible to get 100% of them.
+Steam achievements

This game is like 6 years old, so everyone who like platformers probably played it already but if you missed such a hit, dont hesitate and buy it, you wont be dissapointed.

This game... VVVVVV is honestly just a fantastic game in pretty much every aspect.
  • Punishing yet rewarding level design
  • Simple and intuitive mechanics that are easy to learn, but hard to master
  • One of the single best soundtracks for a video game ever, IMO
For $5 (at time of writing), this game is an absolute steal. If you haven't experienced this game yet, you absolutely should buy it

VVVVVV is about going up and down. You go up to avoid some obstacles and go down to land safely between spikes. I have to mention that controls are very simple - left, right, swap gravity. There is open map that allows you to complete levels in custom order. Great retro style soundtrack included. I should mention that in this game you have to understand the gravity of the situation.

Challenging without being overly frustrating. Simple yet pleasing graphic style. Short and cheap but well worth the money. What else can I say? If you like puzzle platformers at all, buy it now!
