Half Life is one of the first FPS that had a proper story in 1998 and made the leap to 3D graphics.Doom was not.

Here is why: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zb6Eo1D6VW8

Anyway, half life is a milestone for video games and if we didnt have half life then we wouldnt of had COD or CS:GO or Battlefield. This is a very important FPS and i would highly reccomend it to anyone with a weak pc or anyone who's played Half Life 2.

18 years after the release of this game, I feel a sudden desire to review it, as if anyone doesn't know about its acclaim already.

The videogame that marked Valve's global debut, HALF-LIFE is an absolutely genre-defining release. Fresh for its time, unique, different, and still fun, it took the PC gaming world by storm in the late 90s, with its critical praise following it greatly into the turn of the century, with a large modding community and a great engine (GoldSrc) that carried a fulfilling lifespan until the release of its successor, the dominant Source Engine.

In HALF-LIFE, you are put into the shoes of Dr. Gordon Freeman, a 27 year-old theoretical physicist working for the mysterious BLACK MESA Research Facility located in New Mexico. After an experimental test goes wrong, Gordon is found fighting for his life, defending himself from hostile alien lifeforms crossing over to Earth from the borderworld, Xen, after the experiment creates a resonance cascade, opening an interdimensional portal between planets. Gordon meets many of his colleagues along the way, struggling for their own safety against the alien forces, and eventually, the massive military unit HECU, sent to wipe out anything related to the incident. Gordon travels through numerous complexes, canyons, and worlds in his quest for survival.

But that's the special thing about Half-Life: it never feels like you're just "playing as Gordon Freeman." It feels like every action is your own. Every step, jump, and gunshot is a power that YOU hold, not just something you're telling the protagonist to do. This is a goal that Valve had set out to achieve, a goal that was realized through the use of NO protagonist dialogue, an uncommon detail in FPS games at the time. This helped breathe life into the games motto: Run, Think, Shoot, Live.

The controls are great, with the same control scheme being subsequently used in most future Valve games. The gunplay is fun, with a fair amount of weaponry, both human and alien. The atmosphere is what I truly think makes the game. It brings such a feeling of desperation, dread, and isolation that I didn't quite get in the future titles. A true "you against the world" feeling, where every corner can pose a new threat. It's such an intense feeling of cold desolation, unforgiving and eerie as every footstep echoes throughout the metallic hallways that stretch deeper into treacherous facilities.

This is a game that greatly defined my vision of what games should be. It has so much heart put into it that it's mindblowing for a debut game. There's just so much life in Half-Life that I find myself replaying it every so often to this day. Despite its look, it never grows old. It may be difficult to get into if you haven't played before, but anyone who has played it could tell you it's worth the time.

There's not enough good things that I can say about Half-Life, but it's best if you experience it and decide for yourself. While not without its flaws, this is still about as close as I can get to considering a game perfection. Everybody should give this at least one playthrough in their lifetime.

Two week ago I have (for the first time ever) played the original Half-Life. For the people who don't know, Half-Life was the first game that Valve has ever released. The game started the success of Valve that resulted in many game classics and Steam (on which you are now reading this review).

Half-Life itself is a first person shooter. The big difference between Half-Life and other first person shooters is that instead of just shooting, it also has exploration parts through puzzles and platforming. What I really liked is that nothing in the game takes the control away from the player. You go through the entire game and choose what to do by yourself at any given moment. The game doesn't have cutscenes and the story is experienced through gameplay and dialogue. But you can also just walk past all the characters in the story and just continue. I really appreciated this, because if you die you don't have to listen to what you already know. That makes following the story optional, even though there is only a little bit of story given which is basically just: You work at a research lab and everything went wrong. Try to escape. Many parts of the story are mysteries you just have to figure out by yourself throughout the game. I only got annoyed once due to a scientist explaining what was already shown to me through gameplay.

The first experience of playing Half-Life felt a little bit boring. The loading for areas was really annoying, and I thought the game didn't look all that well. After a while though I got into it, and I didn't stop. Thanks to this game, I have a new insane record of non-stop playing without leaving my chair for 13.2 hours, until I completed the game. I guess that also has to do with the fact that it was my first day of my vacation, and hadn't played a game for a long while.
What makes the game so much fun is that you feel so free because nothing is told and you have to figure everything out by yourself through gameplay, which is really satisfying. I never really got stuck for a long while, because everything you find in a room has a reason to be there.

The shooting is also fun and gets even more fun over time. The only problem I had, which might just be a personal issue, is that I think the weapons were not very well balanced. For instance, I wish the shotgun did more damage to make it an instant-kill up close. What I also liked is that in the game there are enough exploration parts and different roads to take, which resulted in me knowing I haven't seen everything yet.

After I finished Half-Life I found out that Valve has updated this original version of Half-Life with better textures, sound and other stuff so that explains why it is easier to look at the old things after a while and be amazed by what Half-Life really is.

In conclusion, I can say that I still recommend playing this updated version of the original Half-Life. What makes Half-Life special is the variety of shooting, puzzle solving and platforming and the lack of hand holding throughout the story and the entire game itself. Playing through Half-Life can make you think about whether we took more steps backwards than forwards with the games nowadays.

P.S.
I will be going through the whole Half-Life series.
Here I will put links to my other Half-Life game reviews:
Half-Life: Opposing Force
Half-Life: Blue Shift

Interesting to share:
The add-on Half-Life: decay ( originally for the ps2 ) is now playable as a Half-Life mod.
Downloadable here at: moddb I played it and I have to say it is pretty descent in co-op.

This game came out more than 17 years ago but is still one of my favorites in terms of what you do and how fascinating the great storytelling is. This game set a ton of milestones for the game industry.

Of course its graphics are from 1998 but you can still enjoy it.

This was the first game from valve and still one of the best. You are controlling a silent protagonist named Gordon Freeman and you have to shoot your way through a very detailled world (at least for 1998).

While I much prefer the fan made game Black Mesa (you can get it on Steam aswell), you can still enjoy this game if you are tolerant of older graphics and sound. If you are a fan of older first person shooters, I recommend getting this while it is on sale.

Pre-Release Review

First I have to say I have played this game so many times I have lost count, why write a review of it after first playing it in 1998? well after reading daft click bait negative reviews about the game, by small few with attention issues. Ever since stepping off that train and being told have a very safe and productive day, my gaming life has never been the same since.

The legacy this game has produced can never be underestimated, from the first modded map I ever played on in TFC 1.5 to counterstrike, tf2, death match, and so much more in between. Do I really need to say anything about the contents of this game? Immersive story, enigmatic lead character, the infamous crow bar,. The fact that the story was driven along so well without the need for cut scenes. Its just a magnificent game that even today is fun to run through and explore.

If you don't own the game then buy it, if you have never played the game before then I am envious as I remember the first time playing it and being blown away, its a game that every self respecting PC gamer should own and play. Forget the negative minority of click baiter's just buy it and enjoy.

I can't even find a single person who has a negative review of this game. This is by far one of the best games i've ever played and it always will be. 96% of the reviews are positive, and metacritic gave it a 96/100.

Where to begin... This game is amazing, I enjoyed it so much. Gameplay is solid. Music is the best. The world and gameplay are so immersive. You get sucked in, and you never want to leave. It feels so authentic. It's a first-person shooter at its core, with lots of puzzle-solving and some platforming. I'm not sure what it is exactly, but something about this game is just...perfect. You should definitely at least give this a try. Chances are, you'll love it as much as I do.
