My last review got a ton of flack from fanboys and I'm going to assume this one willl too, howver, I'm making a new one because my opinion has changed, even if the overall opinion is to not recommend the game. Half-Life is the most overrated game I have ever played. I don't like the word overrated, I think it's silly, just like music, games can mean different things to different people, however this game is always overpraised, using over the top language such as 'innovative', 'ahead of its time' and the most rediculous of all, 'a masterpiece'. Half-Life is not a masterpiece. A masterpiece doesn't allow you to fully, very easily glitch out the game in the first 5 minutes in a miniscule movement area with absolutely no interactivity whatsoever after 18 years of constantly being updated on Steam. If you look at my screenshots I explain that right there. Like with all of my 'reviews', I mention everything in the pros and cons areas with only a little bit more information at the beggining and a little summary at the end.

Pros:
+Guns feel great to use.
+Nice array of weapons from both alien and human.
+Good music and quite atmospheric but also action packed when need be.
+Good variety and set-pieces. Never feels repetitive.
+Voice-acting is decent.
+Lots of hidden details (AI does weird things when you're not looking which is cool, but odd considering you never get to see it).
+Setting was pretty unique and pretty cool.
+Gibs are nice and rewarding.
+AI is very, very good.
+Headshots are immensely satisfying.

Cons:
-The game is very short. Around 5 hours on the hardest difficulty. For frame of reference, Unreal, released in the same year takes roughly 17 hours on the easiest difficulty. Both straight forward shooters.
-Ugly graphics for 1998. Quake II beats it from a year easlier, Carmageddon beats it from a year earlier, Thief the Dark Project smashes it from the same year and Unreal absolutely destroys it from the same year.
-Lacking multiplayer mode. Not a lot of character models, few maps, very few gamemodes, no bots and no in-menu customization.
-Movement is extremely slippery and fast. A major pain in the ♥♥♥ overall.
-And on top of that some moron decided rollerskate platforming would be a great idea in a game with no strafe air-control.
-Horrible animations.
-Sound quality is very poor.
-For a game constantly hailed as being miraculously 'story-driven' for the year, the game has virtually no characters whatsoever.
-Gordon Freeman is a horrible protagonist. Silent and only seen in the menu or with cheats.
-Very glitchy game. I don't know any other game that has a glitch like the one mentioned at the top paragraph. That's just beyond pathetic. Many more.
-Hilariously stupid moments but in the bad, totally unintentional way (scientist jumps out of a window from a high, does a roll all while being chased by zombies and then stops to say to you "oh hi Gordon, nice to see you!" in an overly joyful manner. Very common thing like that.
-The 'Hard' difficulty is rediculously horribly made. Completely artificial difficulty. Enemies (from headcrabs to Nihilanth) are all bullet sponges. A grenade launcher and then three shotgun shells point blank to a bullsquid to kill it? Are you kidding me? Enemies become hitscan and later on there are fifty of them and one of you. I finished Unreal on Godlike and DOOM on Ultra-Violence (the original) so no, I do not suck.
-'Easy' and 'Normal' are an absolutely breeze. Easiest thing since Unreal Tournament on Average.
-As you can tell the difficulty settings are completely messed up, but then there's also a moderately large difficulty ramp when you get to Xen near the end on 'Hard'.
-Not many character models. Around four or so scientist models with three or so voice-actors. One type of guard with one voice-actor and a few marine models. Pretty sure all alien models are the same.
-Way too many set-pieces, even if they are good and exciting as mentioned in a pro, but the game is non-stop set up to do the things it does, there is no surprising moments that make other games so good since it's all scripted.
-Sometimes it's very obviously scripted and you can see where it will begin as soon as you move to a certain bit.
-Paved the way for all of the overly scripted bullcrap everyone seems to hate today such as CoD and everything else you guys don't quit mentioning when hypocritically talking about this game being so much better than them.
-Game does not a lot new while keeping it safe in every area possible.

Sound: 6/10 (sound effects are all unique and very good, music is also very good, but the actual quality is severely lacking)
Graphics: 5/10 (very average for the year, not in the least impressive)
Gameplay: 5.5/10 (slightly better than the average shooter from 1998 but that's about it)
Content/Replayability: 2/10 (single-player is not all that replayable and multiplayer is dead, not that it was any good to begin with)
Overall: 4.5/10 (All my hours consist of me trying to understand why people like it so much. No matter how many videos of bullsht praise I watch I don't think I will ever understand. What a dull, mediocre game in every sense of the word.)

Might update this as I keep playing it and am reminded of things. Am doing my best to keep unbiased.
The game feels like a B-movie equivalent of a game, but not at all a parody of one, it just is one. It's extremely average and over-praised massively. It's what Queen was to the 70's and to kids today except for FPS's from the 90's in the way that younger people or misinformed people think it was so much better than EVERYTHING else from the day when it was actually absolutely not and people are just ignorant. I don't know how Queen and Half-Life get the status they have when there are far more deserving games (and music for the latter) from the year alone far more deserving to have a more praised status than this mediocre, dull piece of entertainment. Masterpiece? Innovative? Ahead of its time? Nope, try again, maybe this time heading towards Deus Ex, Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines, Carmageddon, System Shock or for something more in the same time period, the monumental piece of innovation that was Thief the Dark Project.

Half-Life is not only the most influential and important FPS ever made, it's also the best. The game excels at both combat and ambiance. Where other games rely on jump-scares or pitch black environments all of the time, Half-Life gives those elements to you in doses small enough that they don’t become stale or overdone. The combat is also excellent, though the controls are a little loose by today’s standards. The game even does platforming and puzzling well. Overall, the game is a must-own for any FPS fan, and even one for those not as FPS-inclined.

An absolute classic.

PROS:
Good story
Nice level design
A nice balance between FPS, puzzle, and platformer. (It's like Portal and Quake had a child.)
Nice difficulty (Most of the time. I'll touch on that later.)

CONS:
Graphics that are so dated that it's almost hard to tell enemies from the ground.
REALLY ♥♥♥♥ing hard at the later stages. Seriously, Xen and Blast Pit are the most bullsh*t levels ever.

Overall, a great game. 9/10

I've been playing the game for an hour now, and I would like to give a short review.

I have to say, Half-Life is one of the best games out there in my opinion. Sure, it has crappy graphics, but that was highly expected arrount 1998, and heck, it is one of the best games out there, and the user reviews are overwhelmingly possitive!

So in conclusion, in my opinion, Half-Life is one of the best games out there, and it has been since 1998.

The ORIGINAL MASTERPEICE! Absolutely historical legacy of epic proportions makes this a beautiful trip to the past. It has aged well, with its fantastic story, and immersive level designs.

When I was young, I remember being BLOWN AWAY playing this for the first time with my brother. I can remember all those wow moments. It really ticked all the right boxes!

My brother would search every nook and cranny, and I'd be eagar to move on and see what's round the corner! We both wanted to find everything about the story we possibly could!

Those were the days.... *sigh*

Arguably one of the five best games ever made. Second best I've ever played, after Half Life: 2.
