It would be hard to rate this game negatively - it's really far from being bad.
But, sadly, unless you were present when it appeared, and experienced what news it brought into gaming, all you can see is an older game which plays *nicely*. Not fantastic, brilliant, just nice - it's new elements were used in the games coming after, becoming quite common. Half-life's value lies in it's gameplay and it's history, but mostly in it's history.
I remember playing HL in multiplayer during informatics class around '99-2000, but I couldn't experience the campaign. Though I remember that the lightning-gun, wasp-gun (both alien weapons), and the vast array of weapons, each with alternate fire mode left us all in awe - we played Quake 2 multiplayer before, and HL was a huge step forward.
Looking back to the game from 2016 (First game I played this year :) ) Half-life is a wild mixture of features that were great, features that could be improved upon and I couldn't really say a negative, besides the clunky bossfight.

The graphics aged quite well - as there are no cutscenes, you don't really need to check characters from up close to notice the bad lipsync. (Not to mention that Black Mesa apparently uses clone guards and a few cloned scientists, they are so alike :P ) - but for example the zombie of HL1 in my opinion is much, much creepier than HL2's if we compare their looks.
The sounds are great - footsteps can be heard and sound different on various materials. Also the 3D-sounds work incredibly well - with headphones you can pinpoint enemies by their sounds really accurately, and/or reacting fast for an incoming attack.
Weapon diversity is huge, and while I wanted to use the MP5 for the whole game, I was quite content to see that once there were no marines present who used the machine gun, I could find no more ammo for it - good point for story and world integrity.
Aaand speaking about the story - this is the point what I disliked about the game. I don't want to mention spoilers (Are there spoilers for a 18 year old game?) but the story basically consists of people telling you in A to go to B, and either you can directly go to B, or have to turn on/off some valves, doors, gates, enery to continue to B. Many people says that this game is mysterious but that's only true because there is no world-building - you're Gordon Freeman, everyone's pawn and courier who runs forward, because he was told to do so, while the world is basically a corridor around you. Not like it's a problem - afterall, game is from '98. While the story itself sounds really intresting if one's reading it, experience-wise basically I was shooting at everyone who wasn't wearing blue/labcoat and going forward... Maybe because of the constant first person gameplay (absolutely no cutscenes) I felt more like things there are just blocking me and are annoying than they were actually part of the story.
And to balance this, the story's parts I liked - mostly mechanics and ideas.
- The tentacle monster was a fantastic idea - disract with granades and sneak.
- I liked how the environment could change - like an airstrike near causes the window to shatter, opening a way to go instead of it being openable, or just straight-out open.
- Difficulty level changes more than damage and hp - enemy behaviour and attack patterns also change (to hell with Bethesda's harder -> bulletsponge difficulty scaling)
After finishing the game (LOTS of idling involved, both because chat and leaving computer) to be honest I don't feel like I played a legend. It was a good game that would have been absolutely fantastic if I play it ~15 years ago, but still holds up remarkably well, and posing more challenge on normal than Bioshock Infinite in 1999 mode (hardest) . Games definitely got easier. But it was good to see the game from start to it's end, and finally, it made me much more intrested in HL2 as I was :)

The game that raised the ( crow ) bar of what a shooter is.
Absolutely mind blowing for the time in any way thinkable.

Runs on any PC imaginable, has a enormous mod support, good scripts, scary-smart AI, great 90's shooter mechanics , immersive atmosphere and genuinely intense combat.

Just do your PC an honor and install this game on it.
